To Be Fed Up of Candles in the Xmas Gift Section

Why oh why are the shops full of candles, those reed thingys and other types of what are essentially glorified overpriced air fresheners in the Christmas gift sections?

For one thing, I wouldn't dream of giving anything like that as a Christmas present. It's like saying 'your house smells' in my opinion. A can of £2 Airwick will do the job without spending £15 on a candle!!

There's less choice of other pressies because they take up so much room on the shelves.

As a migraine sufferer, I hate smelling them all.

Is it just me that feels like candles, etc are the new toiletteries gift set? Thoughtless presents 🎁?

Just me?

Love candles here - Cire Trudon especially gorgeous at Christmas

I love scented candles and would be delighted to get them as a gift. I wouldn’t think the person was saying my house smells, and I know it doesn’t.

I love scented candles and would never be disappointed to receive a nice (paraffin free, soy wax, no artificial colours) one.

What do you think should be in the place they occupy then? What are we missing in the gift section because of these space hogging candles?

KatyRebecca84 · 16/12/2021 22:13

Totally don’t agree! Love candles

Hand cream sets.

DS asked for a reed diffuser for his uni room. A good one costs about £30. It smells subtle and complex, not like air freshener. (Although the Cooks one is only £8 and also smells amazing.)

And I will happily spend £30 on a good scented candle. Cheap ones make me nauseous and good ones make me happy.

I don’t use toiletry gift sets and am fussy about what beauty products I use
I don’t get a lot of the gift sets of food produce eg mixed jam miniatures or chutney or themed things like marmite products
Candles are acceptable here as even cheaper ones can look ok as long as the scent isn’t too powerful
I also enjoy being given plants, bulbs, flowers or chocolate
Alcohol gifts are also ok if decent quality and not gimmicky

I love receiving candles as gifts. Absolutely hate plugins though- they give me a headache.

I love getting candles - although I'm a fussy cow and only like certain scents.

I don't get reed diffusers - but I live alone so don't need to worry about kids burning themselves alive.

Just as you don't like candles there will be people who wouldn't really like a lot of things as a Christmas gift. However, the majority don't feel so important to think that just because they don't like something it shouldn't be part of a gift display!!
