Generational inequality- seedy effects

62 replies

EmilyisLivingItUp · 11/12/2021 11:53

We all know this generation are financially way worse off than us with tuition fees, house prices etc. I was speaking to some of the women in my office and they revealed that three of their daughters have only fan accounts, one of their poses nude to be drawn at hen dos .
Is this the disgusting side of generational inequality? I can’t help feel a bit sick at men and women in their 40s/50s leering at half naked 20 year olds because of their financial state. AIBU

*knew 🤦🏻‍♀️

LethargicActress · 11/12/2021 13:10

Yabu because men finding ways to look at women is nothing new. Women using their bodies to make money from men who find them attractive has been going on for centuries. This is nothing to do with generational inequality.

If anything, the fact that we have this technology today makes it much easier and safer for women to use their bodies for money than it was previously.

hygtt · 11/12/2021 13:30

I don't think it helps they can earn so much doing this work & because of inequality the only way for most to afford a house, decent pension etc is to earn a lot.

hygtt · 11/12/2021 13:31

I also think stigma had been removed

Gumboots29 · 11/12/2021 13:35

@DeniseCrease

Not at all, I was at a hen party pre covid and cringed at having a 20 year old ‘buff butler’ serve women old enough to be his mother to try and pay his way through uni. We need to do away with these ‘services’
Oh god the same. We asked them to put their clothes on and help us in the kitchen instead as about 80% of the hen party were mortified!
SeaAndSnow · 11/12/2021 13:37

I'm 49 and can recall uni friends in sex work at that time to assist financially. So i am not sure this is a recent thing. Doesn't make it right though.

Etinoxaurus · 11/12/2021 13:39

@MintJulia

Not unreasonable but perhaps naive . I'm in my late 50s. As a student I posed for an art class to make some money. Plus worked in a pub most evenings, and in a toy factory in the summer.

At that point there were no student loans so if a student's parents didn't help, it was very difficult to survive.
I wouldn't have done it at hen nights though. There are plenty of other jobs available..

Key point about generational inequality is that when you were a student there were grants!
MurielSpriggs · 11/12/2021 13:43

@Choirgirl2021

Correct me if I’m wrong but when Osborne was chancellor didn’t he include this work as part of the gdp? There have been pushes to bring this employment into taxable income with ssp, etc across Europe.
Sightly missing the point of the thread, but it's always been taxable in the UK.
MintJulia · 11/12/2021 13:56

@sarahsonnet But no-one buys an 'average house' to start with. They do the same as we did, buy a one bed flat at a third of the cost and work their way up.

fournonblondes · 11/12/2021 13:57

@Ozanj

OnlyFans is the equivalent of Classifieds / flyers put in bathrooms or phone booths. A certain type of person will always be attracted to sex work. That doesn’t mean it’s more or less acceptable for this generation than previous ones!!
Exactly! However, somehow these jobs are getting normalised by some in society. There are plenty of jobs but younger generations are after quick ways of getting big money quickly.
sst1234 · 11/12/2021 13:59

Why are so many people going to university to do Mickey Mouse degrees that they have to respite to this type of thing? What about those don’t come from money and am don’t get into type of thing? Sorry OP, you’re argument is weak. This is just a quick way of making money for people who are too lazy to do normal work like the rest of the population.

MintJulia · 11/12/2021 14:03

@etinoxaurus 'there were grants, you are correct, but my grant covered my room and half my bus pass. Nothing left for food, books, clothes, and no possibility of a loan.

So earning money between lectures was the ONLY way to survive if parents were unwilling to help.

We weren't able to get into debt and there were plenty who worked in night clubs or on smutty phone lines.

People always forget that bit when berating the boomers

It has always been taxable. Back months late 80's and 90's I used to do tax returns for a number of escorts who worked at the massage parlors in Sheffield
Ss1970 · 11/12/2021 14:19

I agree and disagree. If you research inequality between my generation and the younger generation the statistics show they are much worse off. And yes I do think the stigma should be removed if the younger ones coming out of uni are struggling.

However I’m reminded of a 50th birthday party attended a few years back that had these buff butlers. The guests had their hands all over this man who we found out was a 21 year old student.
Here was a young man who was half naked being felt up while he served drinks in a house he could likely never ever afford in order to fund his studies.

To make things worse at the end of the night one of the guests drunkenly offered him more money to remove his apron.

This whole event made me question the predicaments we have left for that generation.

I thoroughly enjoyed having a stripper at my hen do and I obviously wanted a fit, muscular man which happens to be a man in his twenties as opposed to someone twice his age. That is just disgusting. Leering over a young man and believing you have the right to buy his consent to do so. I don't understand why you'd enjoy something like that, even less so when you're about to marry someone you claim to love.

I wasn’t leering and wolf whistling at a random man in the street he had clearly chosen that career.

Yes I feel guilty to an extent as I would not like my family to be in that line of work but I hardly think it’s ‘disgusting’, an adult man took his clothes off at my hen do it really isn’t that deep.
If you think it’s impacted the love I have for my husband then that’s very unusual.

DolphinFC · 11/12/2021 16:58

Cognitive dissonance.

It's OK you for to enjoy the benefits of somebodyelse's children being sex workers but you'd hate it for yours.

If a man came on here and said he loved watching strippers at his stag do but he really oves his wife he'd be torn to spreads.

I’m not having this debate on a Saturday night. At my hen party an attractive man took his clothes off and I enjoyed it, it really isn’t that deep.

The two aren’t mutually exclusive, you can love your partner and still find other people attractive.

If you think it’s impacted the love I have for my husband then that’s very unusual. I'm not saying it has, but I wouldn't be with someone financing that industry and neither would my partner. I don't agree with buying consent, it isn't real consent.

TractorAndHeadphones · 11/12/2021 17:29

The issue isn’t generational inequality it’s social acceptance. The youth of today don’t mind having sex with people they barely know. So showing their bodies to strangers for money isn’t a big deal for them.

They could do ‘proper’ work, and get by. Or do a few hours of ‘seedy’ work and have enough to go on holiday.

IsItReallySeedy · 11/12/2021 17:38

Not surprisingly I've name changed for this....

I'll keep it a little vague as to what it is I do, as I know mumsnet will not agree with it but hey ho....!

I choose to go into this line of work because I am a single mum and uni student. Student loan and grants only cover my very basic expense where I live, and childcare grants only really cover childcare for the time I am studying (be it at home or physically in uni). There's just me (DDs dad has her sporadically when he wants to Disney dad for a day or so) so it's not like I can work in a pub on an evening, if I wanted to work during the day I have to fit it around awkward uni hours and find child care and I simply don't have anyone who can provide regular child care for me.

Pre DD I have worked "normal" jobs so it's not a case of being work shy or trying my make money doing sweet FA.
So my options are that me and DD live life on a budget that simply doesn't allow for any extras and treats or I can do this. It allows me to be "online" for an hour or so when I chose l, I have no travel or extra expenses and I earn more per hour than I can ever hope to, though I do hope to have a more acceptable job after I graduate.

I guess basically, it provides an income that has no effect what so ever on my family time, nor causes me child care issues, and massively improves my standard of living and stops the money worries.

Do I think its exploitive? The men (and occasional women) who look at me don't make me feel exploited, I chose how much I charge for the service and I am comfortable I can chose what I am prepared to do... the companies that i provide the service through however, make me feel massively exploited. They earn more than I do! However they are the only company I have found that allows me to do it as anonymously as possible...

IsItReallySeedy · 11/12/2021 17:40

And when it comes to generational wealth, I have maybe 3k of inheritance to come, nothing will really be passed down to me. I have gone to uni to study for a specific profession which I hope will mean I have far more to pass down to my DC so that maybe they won't have to do what I do.

IsItReallySeedy · 11/12/2021 17:43

Sorry another post whilst I am pondering it... every single pub I have worked at has almost certainly hired me because I am averagely attractive in my face, but have ridiculously large breast but otherwise petite frame. So undoubtedly hired for men to leer at me, but for minimum wage and undesirable working hours, because as one boss put it "tits sell beer". I may aswell be levered at for 10x the amount.

DolphinFC · 11/12/2021 17:44

If you don't want to debate are you sure that posting your opinions on a discussion forum is really your sort of thing?

No I would not like my son who is 22 to become a stripper but I also wouldn’t like him to join the army and be deployed overseas but it doesn’t mean I believe the army shouldn’t exist.

An attractive man took his clothes off and let’s me rub oil on his body and everyone involved had fun.

It was a one off hen party im not regularly financing anything.
