Google maps told me to stop swearing!

How? I cursed another driver who jumped the light when I was trying to turn right at a junction with no filter (quietly with the windows up I should add Grin) and Google maps said 'please don't speak to me like that'! Wtf. I checked and microphone permission is turned off, Google assistant permissions off, and it's certainly not the first time I've swore whilst using the app but it's the first time it's told me off.
Is this a thing? Has it happened to anyone else?

Even with all these things turned off it’s safe to assume your phone is always listening to you.

Sparklingbrook · 10/12/2021 13:45

I'm off out later I'll see if I can get Google maps to tell me off. Grin My car has a habit of telling me it's time for a coffee if I drive for too long and who am I to argue when that cup and saucer lights up on the dashboard. Grin

Envoitrevisage · 10/12/2021 13:47

Was your car connected to Bluetooth in the car? If so presumably it was the Bluetooth car micro phone that picked it up.

Pedalpushers · 10/12/2021 13:47

Even if it's secretly listening, what a strange thing to program in. Who cares if someone swears at a device?

Madabootcats · 10/12/2021 13:47

It just freaked me out as its never happened before and permissions off. It's my work phone. So weird.

What film is this?

Sparklingbrook · 10/12/2021 13:49

Well if Googlemaps is listening to me I feel for ir because it's been subjected to me singing along to my amazing Spotify playlist for ages. Grin

DrSbaitso · 10/12/2021 13:51

I just tried swearing at Google Maps. First it tried to pretend I'd said "ship" and "flat" and directed me to a local maritime-themed attraction. I tried again, louder and very very clear, and it asterisked out all but the first letters and searched for places called "S&F".

Madabootcats · 10/12/2021 13:56

The exact words I used were fucking arsehole for anyone interested Blush. It's just so weird as I've sworn many times whilst using it and never had a response back Confused

I have no idea why or how that happened but as a fellow car swearer I like this a lot - I will use the same language on mine & see if it works!

RandomLondoner · 10/12/2021 14:27

I hardly use Alexa, but she definitely responded to me swearing at her on one occasion. (Didn't tell me off, but she knew I was speaking to her, and that I was very unhappy with her.)

amiafreakofnature · 10/12/2021 14:29

I swore repeatedly driving round london last week and Google maps didn't tell me off ....

God yeah. If I'm not swearing I'm singing or having a private rant. Have to let all my crazy out in the car so as to appear normal the rest of the time Grin

I have sworn at Google Maps on more than one occasion, with the voice assistant turned on, so it does respond.
It's usually something like
"No Google, I did NOT need the right hand fucking lane!"
Sorry, I don't understand
"No, because you're being fucking useless"
... and it apologises.

Now I'm worried I've brow beaten my Google assistant! Blush

girlmom21 · 10/12/2021 14:39

It's more likely to have been Siri

Telling you off is creepy though!

Op I also have an android, Google maps has a Google voice assistant now. I activated mine just now by saying Google maps, I'm guessing you activated it with some choice of words before you swore and that there's a setting you need to look into about how you activate it.

Does Google assist work in the same way? Where you can say "hey whatever" and it activates?

Off to try this with Google maps right now

I tried it again after and nothing. Appears to have been a one off. Starting to get a bit worried it doesn't appear to have happened to anyone else!

God knows whose listening 😬😬😬🤣

I don't know I've never used it. Just Google maps. Checked app permissions after and all Google assist were off and microphone on Google maps was off.
