Google maps told me to stop swearing!

How? I cursed another driver who jumped the light when I was trying to turn right at a junction with no filter (quietly with the windows up I should add Grin) and Google maps said 'please don't speak to me like that'! Wtf. I checked and microphone permission is turned off, Google assistant permissions off, and it's certainly not the first time I've swore whilst using the app but it's the first time it's told me off.
Is this a thing? Has it happened to anyone else?

@BobbieT1999
Op I also have an android, Google maps has a Google voice assistant now. I activated mine just now by saying Google maps, I'm guessing you activated it with some choice of words before you swore and that there's a setting you need to look into about how you activate it.

Ah, a plausible explanation. Yes I sometimes accidently seem to activate Google assist in my own phone and it starts doing random stuff. When on earth did they add this assistant thing to maps? I just want directions not a lecture on my language (I have children for thatGrin).
Will have to do some investigations.

Do you have kids or a friend that might have set up a routine as a prank?

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 10/12/2021 14:57

Maybe it was your boss and you accidentally butt dialled them! Grin

tinkywinkyshandbag · 10/12/2021 15:06

I once swore while driving and Siri piped up "that's not nice!". Gave me quite a surprise!

Madabootcats · 10/12/2021 15:09

@KrisAkabusi

No, it's my work phone, stays in my work bag when I'm not working, no one knows the pass code!

I go into parity error if someone swears at me.

I can't tell you how many times I've panicked I've not hung up a call after having a sweary car rant. More so clients, my boss wouldn't mind, she's pretty sweary herself Grin

Yes, it was the total surprise! Glad to hear similar has happened to someone else, was starting to question if I was hearing things Confused.

I use Google maps sat nav and tend to listen to either Radio 4 or podcasts as I'm driving along. Every now and then Google pops up and says 'Sorry, I didn't catch that'. Never had it tell me off for language though!

twizzlersizzler · 10/12/2021 15:27

I briefly did some work improving AI (basically listening to endless audio files and seeing what was said in order that they could improve the tech), one of those jobs where you get paid 1p for every 400 audio files. There were lots of files with people swearing, exasperated at the automated sat nav in their cars. I really felt for them in their moment of frustration! They didn't seem aware that the tech (and then some random person) was listening to them, which is a bit scary.

Olliesocks · 10/12/2021 15:30

@MangoBiscuit

I have sworn at Google Maps on more than one occasion, with the voice assistant turned on, so it does respond. It's usually something like "No Google, I did NOT need the right hand fucking lane!" Sorry, I don't understand "No, because you're being fucking useless" ... and it apologises.

Now I'm worried I've brow beaten my Google assistant! Blush

Mine sulks and stops giving directions if I do this (inbuilt Ford one). She’s quite stroppy at times.
Thecurtainsofdestiny · 10/12/2021 15:33

I've also been told off like this. I didn't even swear!

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/12/2021 15:38

Just don't rename Siri Hal.

@MrsTerryPratchett

Just don't rename Siri Hal.
It can only be attributable to human error.

I stayed in an Airbnb and saw an Alexa just sitting there, I asked 'Alexa, are you listening to me?' it proceeded to talk clap trap about data protection and not uploading things to the cloud that I said.
Bollocks she was listening to everything, everything gets uploaded.
We've all heard the story about the couple having a chat and it got transmitted 70 miles away to another houses Alexa and a random couple heard the other person's conversation.
It's data mining on a detrimental scale we welcome into our houses.
The amount of people who have conversations at my work place and then log onto facebook and facebook recommends what they were talking about at work with their phone in their pockets.... How many of you reading this have had that happen to you? And I get shot down as a tin foil hat wearer Wink

Madabootcats · 10/12/2021 16:57

Troll Grin. That's funny.

@AdmiralCain

Yes I'm aware devices like alexa and Google assist listen, that's how they work. I'm perplexed because I always have permissions off unless absolutely necessary and even then I select 'when app in use '. And also I've used the app for years and it's never spoken to me other than directions. It must be something do with google assist.

Ive never heard the story about the alexa conversation but I do remember constantly having crossed telephone conversations back in the day and hearing everyone else's conversations Grin.

Siri tells me off all the time.
Our phones are listening. Mine will bring up ads for shops in apps if I mention them.

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/12/2021 21:05

I mentioned in passing a country I have never been to or googled in conversation with a colleague. A very obscure country.

Cue adverts for holidays.

So I recommend talking about lots of very very nice stuff next to your partners phone, especially at this time of year Grin

Duchess379 · 10/12/2021 22:52

Omg, that's outrageous! We have Alexa & sometimes she responds to us without prompting 😆

notime2cry · 10/12/2021 23:43

@Madabootcats I'm not sure whether to believe you or not, but if that really happened, perhaps its related to Google's new Terms of Service. You've probably been getting (and ignoring) emails about them - I certainly have. A quick skim suggests there's some new terms about 'respect' but I didn't see anything specific about swearing in your own car, and especially not when you haven't given Google permission to listen. Hmm

FurryAntiWaxer · 20/12/2021 09:07

Wow. I just found this thread. Same thing happened to me. I was speaking to another driver, and told them to ignore the Google directions as the stupid thing was useless. It piped up ' please don't speak to me like that'. It sounded so offended. Who the fuck is me, creepy little AI bastard has an identity now? Hopped on to see if was a thing. How long till it starts telling people what pronouns to use?

KeyboardCat · 20/12/2021 09:14

I was chatting with my DP about 'Fast and Furious' and called the actor 'Jean Claude Van Dong', and DP's watch said 'That's not nice'.

Had us in fits, but bloody hell!

Welcome to the club! I am so glad that l have the honor in knowing someone else got told-off by "Google Map" as my wife and l was while riding in our car a week ago.This felt so bizarre and creepy while totally unexpected.Here is our story: While riding to a city 2 hours away using "Google Map",so happened we got to a point where the virtual voice apparently had us going in a perpetual 2 minute intersecting loop.As l was driving my wife as a passenger lost it once she saw were traveling in circles,then cursed out expletives to "Google Map",while before she could finish the voice told her "not to disrespect her, that although she is a virtual assistant to not use derogatory language on her while working---then said my name at the end.So there you have it! Seems like something out of a sci-fi movie,or maybe just a hint of AI (Artificial Intelligence) in the wings? No telling,but l am grateful you posted that you had a similar experience that the wife and l had.It's evidently listening to us!
