Fitted sheets - aaarrrgh!

AIBU to have come to hate fitted sheets? They only ever fit well for a day or two and then they start coming off the corners of the bed and making everything wrinkly. Or am I just somehow not putting them on correctly?

Do you have deep mattresses and normal depth fitted sheets? I've never had one come off the corners but I did have to buy new sheets when we got a deep IKEA mattress.

KittensWearingWoollyMittens · 08/12/2021 23:52

Yes I think so. Both mattress and sheets normal double bed size. They just seem so tight and awkward to put on. I always end up breaking a nail whilst putting it on the bed Blush

Check the depth of your mattress if it's deeper than your sheets they'll ping off. M&S do excellent fitted sheets with lots of elastic round the corners to keep them in place

bellsbuss · 09/12/2021 00:13

You need the deeper ones

Lupinhere37 · 09/12/2021 00:14

Buy a size bigger? I buy king for the doubles and super king for the king size. So much easier but I also agree about M&S. Their elasticated corners are superior to all others!

TurnUpTurnip · 09/12/2021 00:19

Yep always have this trouble but I think it’s because my mattress is very thick, annoying having to buy bigger as they cost more 😬

Spanglybangles · 09/12/2021 00:24

My favourite sheets are Sanderson deep fitted sheets, 300 thread count. Costco sell a twin pack for a great price. Once on the mattress, they don’t budge at all…absolutely brilliant. For those with a higher budget they also make them in a 600 thread count and can be bought elsewhere.

Hoesbeforebroes · 09/12/2021 00:27

If they're too tight they're too small!

They often shrink from original size if tumble dried. My kids have double beds and all their sheets are hand-me-downs I bought for my king bed that shrank over time.

Chely · 09/12/2021 00:29

I buy a size up in fitted sheets.

Blueberrycreampie · 09/12/2021 00:42

Believe it or not Wilco's are great. Their Egyptian Cotton ones have deep corners and sides, and stay put unlike many other brands.

nordica · 09/12/2021 00:50

I only buy the deep or extra deep ones as the normal ones shrink in the wash and become too tight.

phishy · 09/12/2021 02:47

Sounds like the sheets are wrong size.

Even my brushed cotton sheets from the market stay on all week!

mrsbyers · 09/12/2021 07:13

Dunelm extra deep fitted sheets

dontletthemugglesgetyoudownn · 09/12/2021 07:53

Get sheet suspenders!! It sounds weird but they hold the sheet into place :)

Ikea continental sized bedding is slightly larger and should fit well on a British sized mattress.

Blackmagicqueen · 09/12/2021 07:58

I always buy good quality deeper ones in high thread count cotton but they seem to shrink over time which is annoying esp with tumble drying in winter! I would convert to a flat sheet tucked at the corners but i like the sheet super flat and snug fit and i think it wouldnt go tight enough!

violetbunny · 09/12/2021 08:02

My best friend's mum told me she always buys fitted sheets one bed sized larger than the actual bed. She is a genius, and I have done exactly that ever since.

Blackmagicqueen · 09/12/2021 08:19

@violetbunny it's a great idea but we have a superking bed so the next size up for us would be called emperor and very expensive and not as readily available. Alas i'll have to keeo wresting with corners!

Blackmagicqueen · 09/12/2021 08:20

We have a superking too, so same issue. It's worth it though!

BarbaraWoodlouse · 09/12/2021 09:14

Those sheet suspenders work really well 👍🏻

MatildaTheCat · 09/12/2021 09:21

I too dream of an absolutely tight, flat sheet. We have a big topper on our mattress and despite extra deep sheets I can never achieve that proper tension all round.

I trained as a nurse back in the day and have strict ideas about proper bed making smile

NotMeekNotObedient · 09/12/2021 09:43

Ironing board clips on each corner works wonders.

KittensWearingWoollyMittens · 09/12/2021 13:34

Lots of great tips here, thank you everyone! I think they must have shrunk when I tumble-dried themShock

Use sheet clips!
