To LOVE Reign (TV show)

XelaM · 07/12/2021 15:33

Blush As someone who loves history (and therefore knows that "Reign" utterly butchered any historical resemblance to that time period and that the show has as much to do with Mary the Queen of Scots' reign in France as I with Jesus Grin ) I still cannot help but be utterly addicted!

I watched two seasons in just a few days (at the huge detriment of work and all my life responsibilities Shock ). I am hooked! I must say it has a lot to do with the insanely handsome Francis Wink (who in real life died as a sickly teenager and most likely never consummated his marriage but in the TV show is as ferocious gorgeous King)

The costumes are a farce; the show has zero historical accuracy and yet I am a shameful addict! 🙈

Anyone else?

Where can I find it? I’ve been wanting to watch it for a while. The costumes look AMAZING.

CounsellorTroi · 07/12/2021 15:40

I couldn’t get on with it. Period costumes with pop music jars a bit with me.

XelaM · 07/12/2021 15:42

@DazedandConcerned It's on Amazon Prime. Unfortunately, I missed it on Netflix when it was free and now have to pay for it.

The costumes are gorgeous if you don't care that they have absolutely nothing to do with that time period Grin

...and have I mentioned that Francis is GORGEOUS?!

DazedandConcerned · 07/12/2021 15:43

@XelaM thank you so much. I’ll have a look for it tonight.

He is gorgeous. I wonder if he’ll run away with me… Grin

PineappleIceCream · 07/12/2021 15:44

I watched it ages ago and absolutely loved it, Adelaide Kane is absolutely gorgeous! It’s so addictive. I considered watching it again awhile back but like you said I don’t think it’s on Netflix now.

minou123 · 07/12/2021 15:50

I binged watched the entire thing in 1st Lockdown on Netflix. I can't believe Netflix has taken it off.

You are right it is historically completely inaccurate, but there is something so addictive about it. Grin

Megan Fellows plays Catherine De'Medici.
But you may remember her from playing Anne in Anne of Green Gables in the 1985 series. I loved that series and I loved her playing Anne, in my opinion she was the best Anne.

Peccary · 07/12/2021 15:54

I was hooked on this absolute load of beautiful nonsense during my mat leave, Bash was more my cup of tea

nettytree · 07/12/2021 15:54

Is that the one where king Francis fucked someone out the window?

MrzClaus · 07/12/2021 15:55

Bash was my dream man when I watched it first!!

minou123 · 07/12/2021 15:55

@nettytree

Is that the one where king Francis fucked someone out the window?
Yes Grin But that might be a bit of a spoiler
XelaM · 07/12/2021 15:57

@CounsellorTroi I completely agree with you in ordinary circumstances. Pop music, ridiculous (albeit beautiful) costumes from Zara, no historical accuracy in pretty much ANYTHING - and yet it is sooo good (in a guilty secret kind of way).

It's such a contrast to "The Last Czar" (about the Russian royal family on Netflix) which is extremely historically accurate.

But who cares about history - the show is amazing! :D

OP posts:
XelaM · 07/12/2021 16:01

I'm not a fan of Bash (also a fictional character I must add). Francis, on the other hand, is what my dreams are made of!

And yes - this is the show where the King fcuked someone out of a window... Grin

I've only watched a few, it's absolutely bonkers but in a good way. The ladies in waiting are like Valley Girls.

I also can't get over Anne of Green Gables being old enough to play the King's mother.

Have you seen "The Great", it's meant to be equally historically pish but equally entertaining. (I also enjoyed Ekaterina, I've been a fan of Catherine the Great since I read Antonia Fraser's biography of her years ago).

irishfarmer · 07/12/2021 16:17

I really enjoyed but I think I had a long break before season 4 and could never get back into the swing of it, never finished it.

@Mochudubh Ohh I haven't seen those! Will have a look once I finish Reign. Love Megan Fellows as Catherine de Medici!

Btw, if you like dramas about the Russian Royal family, I can highly recommend "The Last Czars". It's surprisingly historically accurate

XelaM · 07/12/2021 16:44

...and yes the "Ladies" in Reign resemble more the Kardashians in behaviour, looks and even names Grin

Madbadandusuallysad · 07/12/2021 16:53

I was OBSESSED with this show when it was on Netflix. yes it was cheesy, the acting slightly hammy, the history all over the place BUT it was brilliant!

MarieVanGoethem · 07/12/2021 17:02

I loved it because I took it as a sort of historical AU. Normally I get really annoyed by inaccurate stuff, but this was so absurd I got really into it…

XelaM · 07/12/2021 18:45

I am also a history nerd and I hate it when purportedly historical dramas take all kinds of liberties, but Reign is so absurd in its utter contempt for history that it's actually brilliant Grin

OP posts:
Mochudubh · 07/12/2021 19:21

I have a degree in Scottish History and I get the absolute raaaage at Braveheart, because it was somehow portrayed as "what happened" rather than the complete bloody fiction it is.

But Reign is so delightfully nuts and doesn't bother historical accuracy in the slightest that I don't feel the need to shout "That never happened" or "Why did they leave that bit out"? Like I do with Braveheart.

Cards on table, I want independence but I fucking HATE Braveheart.

Aethelfled · 07/12/2021 19:27

Loved it too! Toby Regbo who plays Francis is also in The Last Kingdom, and will be in the new season of A Discovery of Witches

Butchyrestingface · 07/12/2021 19:45

Possibly the most unreasonable OP I have ever seen on this site. #JokingNotJoking

SnowWhitesRestingBitchFace · 07/12/2021 19:48

Bloody love Reign! Definitely more of a Bash fan though. He's lovely 😋

XelaM · 07/12/2021 20:42

Bash is too serious. Always works hard, never goes to parties, doesn't have titles, no fun Wink Also, his haircut is ugly. #TeamFancis al the way! 😍

Bells3032 · 07/12/2021 20:46

I'm same as you. Absolute historical nut here and know that bar the names of the main characters it bears zero historical accuracy but I was addicted. So sad they finished it. The last season isnt as good and a little rushed but the rest is amazing.

Where are you watching it? Thought it went off Netflix
