Food delivery drivers not delivering to the door

I am currently self-isolating and cannot leave the house. I am also struggling to get a supermarket order. I have no food although I have money in my account.

No issues, I’ll order a pizza. About 40 minutes later the pizza delivery driver rings my bell to be let in to the gate (it’s a gated community). I then waited for him to buzz again when he got to my block of flats. Then I guess I expected him to knock on my door and then leave the pizza at my door. He didn’t come. I called the pizza delivery company and they told me the drivers were not allowed to enter housing estates “because of Covid”. So I was expected to leave my house, leave my block of flats and walk 100 years to the entrance to my housing estate.

Obviously I can’t because I am self-isolating and could get into trouble. AIBU or is this completely ridiculous?

YANBU - that is completely ridiculous. I'd be quite annoyed to have to pay for a delivery that didn't actually get delivered to me.

MyOtherProfile · 05/12/2021 07:06

That's weird. I'd discuss this on the phone when you make the order. I thought deliveries became more user friendly due to covid and people not being able to come out.

Meowwwwwww · 05/12/2021 07:14

YANBU that they should have brought the pizza to your door but YWBU if you left the pizza outside instead of walking 100 yards outdoors to grab the pizza.

Simonjt · 05/12/2021 07:18

I live in a flat, delivery drivers never come to the individual doors, you always go to the main entrance to collect. I’ve only ever lived in flats and I have never had a takeaway driver go further than the communal entrance or door.

AuntieStella · 05/12/2021 07:20

They probably don't go through doors into buildings (totally reasonable) but not going through a gate to reach the door seems just plain silly.

Do they refuse to go through garden gates as well? Thought not

Jacaranda75 · 05/12/2021 07:50

@Meowwwwwww I am not allowed to leave my flat. The fines are huge!

Where on earth do you live that they fine you just for going to grab your pizza? Would you have been likely to bump into anyone else?

Jacaranda75 · 05/12/2021 08:18

@ApolloandDaphne The whole point about self-isolation is that you don’t leave the house.

OP posts:
ApolloandDaphne · 05/12/2021 08:19

@Jacaranda75 Possibly but I wouldn't want to starve in the process so on balance I would probably choose to put on a mask and dash out to grab my food.

CloudyStorms · 05/12/2021 08:22

Most drivers here would expect you to leave your flat and go to the main door.

CloudyStorms · 05/12/2021 08:23

I thought it was so they don't waste time finding your flat or risk meeting the unfriendly neighbours in the corridors and being mugged of the pizza. It was what they did pre covid too.

Jacaranda75 · 05/12/2021 08:28

Oh I didn’t realise this was normal. I don’t often order takeaways.

Cyrilgoggin · 05/12/2021 08:29

You are not going to be fined for walking downstairs to the gate to collect a pizza. You really aren't. Unless you are not in the UK.

Lucythewonderdog · 05/12/2021 08:29

You are being ridiculous, you can go to the main door of your building without being fined. Don’t expect the driver to put themselves at risk. 🙄🙄🙄

Simonjt · 05/12/2021 08:31

Do you think people in flats are living with ten days of rubbish in their homes, or not having supermarket food deliveries etc?

Shedmistress · 05/12/2021 08:34

Did you leave the pizza there all night? Or did you go and get it?

I live in a flat. They always come to my door. Always. And I get maybe two or three takeaways a week.

I had one this week who as he approached sent me a message asking if I can meet him downstairs, but I didn’t see the message and he came to my door. I assume that was because it was a busy time and he wanted to quickly finish the job to get another one.

PinkWednesdays · 05/12/2021 08:36

My previous flat had a similar set up to OP - buzz to get through the gates, buzz to get into the block, and then lift up to the 10th floor, and the delivery driver always always delivered to my door.

londonrach · 05/12/2021 08:39

Having lived in lots of flats delivery man to block of flat door. Never had anyone come to flat door. The stairs take too long

I live in a flat and takeaway delivery people always come to my flat door, and have continued to do so throughout covid. I've never had one refuse. They often wear a mask, they put the delivery on the floor outside my door, knock or ring the bell then step back and wait until they see me open the door. I am only in a small block though, maybe that makes a difference.
SpindlesWinterWhorl · 05/12/2021 08:42

Seems like a daft way to run a business, making customers disgruntled, and likely to be ringing up complaining.

So many questions. Why on earth didn't they tell you when you ordered that they don't enter gated housing estates? What happened to the pizza? Did you get a refund? What toppings did you (not) get??

Westfacing · 05/12/2021 08:45

Since Covid I've noticed a change - my next door neighbours order a lot of deliveries and from what I can hear the driver comes through the main gate to the block front door and they collect from there.

I suppose if anyone wants it delivered to their actual flat you have to make it clear when ordering.

Hope you get some food!

PinkWednesdays · 05/12/2021 08:49

Interesting there are people who live in flats who have to collect. I never ever have done so, they always bring to my front door, and either knock and wait for me or knock and leave it on the floor. Wonder if it depends on where you live.

icedcoffees · 05/12/2021 08:51

You're not going to get a fine for walking downstairs to collect a pizza Hmm

Stomacharmeleon · 05/12/2021 09:05

I would assume they Are not in the uk....
