Original Home Alone - bartering to swap flights at Christmas

Xtraincome · 04/12/2021 08:48

Just watching Xmas movies with DDs.

Is it me or does anyone else feel that if Catherine O Haras character was desperate to get home to her kid in Chicago from Paris in 2021, that within minutes someone would have given up their flight for her?

She had to offer one elderly lady $500, shit loads of jewellery and a purse to get to a layover in Portland or Dallas?

I'd like to think that today, even if it was virtue signalling (although I think it wouldn't be necessarily), that someone would just be more forgiving without needing to be offered loads of material goods to help someone out?

I am aware that there would not be as much of a movie if she got back to Kevin in a timely manner.

I'm not sure, I think airports bring out the beast in the most mild mannered of people.

Fernando072020 · 04/12/2021 08:57

I think it was also the time of year. Everyone was flying to be somewhere for Christmas...with their families. For all they knew, she was a crazy lady making an excuse just to get their ticket 🤷🏼‍♀️

Strawing · 04/12/2021 08:57

It’s just a frankly mad plot contrivance to delay Kevin being contacted, like the phone lines being down (though how does Kevin order his pizza?), the police being useless and literally everyone they’ve ever met being ‘away for the holidays’.

Like there’s no reason why the mother couldn’t rent a car at the airport, rather than driving cross country with a polka band in the back of a Rent A Van.

Shiningpath · 04/12/2021 09:32

Not a chance. Everyone at the airport has somewhere to be.

mynameiscalypso · 04/12/2021 09:34

I find that it's best not to think too much about the logic of Hone Alone because none of it makes sense.

icedcoffees · 04/12/2021 09:37

Nah, not a chance. Everyone else wanted to be somewhere for the holidays too.

ComtesseDeSpair · 04/12/2021 09:38

I might if I wasn’t going anywhere in a hurry, the flight was a very regular one and the airline was happy to book me onto the next one two hours later and give me comp access to the lounge. I generally don’t mind waiting in airport lounges whilst getting trashed on free drinks.

Otherwise, less likely.

delilahbucket · 04/12/2021 09:41

If we are talking realistically, who goes on holiday and actually manages to forget one of their kids?! 😂

LetHimHaveIt · 04/12/2021 09:46

The phone line thing, much like Monica and Rachel's rent-controlled apartment, has been much-explained. The tree took down the main trunk line, disrupting international and out-of-state calls. Local calls were unaffected.

TawdryBrush · 04/12/2021 10:06

I dont think that's the biggest plot hole to be honest Grin

My friend was an are stewardess and they did once have a family board the plane who'd left one of their (many) kids in the airport apparently.
MissMinutes24 · 04/12/2021 10:11

*air!

IcedWinterPenguin · 04/12/2021 10:14

I hate HA because I used to work in child protection and the whole leaving the kid behind (twice!) makes me jumpy.

RepentBirthingPersonFucker · 04/12/2021 10:14

I was wasting energy yesterday wondering why Kevin didn't just ring the police and how did he manage the big clean up?
And why his mother just said he is home alone to the police, which sounds trivial, rather than properly explaining the situation

IcedWinterPenguin · 04/12/2021 10:15

Anyway- i was once asked to move seats so someone could sit with their child and received a bottle of Veurve Cliquot from the stewardess. So if bumping myself off a flight resulted in anything like that I'd be all for it.

No, I disagree.

A number of years ago we arrived at a station where a lot of people change trains. As our train pulled out, it broke down. There was a train broken down on the opposite track so no trains could get in or out.

There was a lady who was running up and down shouting how she needed a taxi and get her one now etc. We all rolled our eyes, and wondered why she thought she was more important than the other 200 people stuck on the platform.

The station people were doing their best to sort people but the first bus they could get was going to be another threequarters of an hour and people were phoning taxi firms and a couple turned up. The lady rushed up each time, and was turned away by the people who had ordered one.
She was getting more and more vocal. We rolled our eyes more and more...

Then a taxi turned up and everyone surged towards it. The station staff stopped everyone and herded her into it. I smiled (while holding a cute baby) at the nearest staff member and he asked where I was aiming for, then told me to get in the taxi. So I did.

Actually she had good reason to be vocal. Her granddaughter, who had been orphaned a year or so ago in a car accident that had also left her needing a kidney transplant. That morning they'd got a match for her granddaughter, but her granddaughter was scared and refusing to take it unless granny was there. So she was literally dashing against time to get to her granddaughter.

So, no people won't step back and let someone get their space even with a very good reason.

In reality there would be no asking by Kate, the passengers would be through security and she'd be stuck in the check in hall arguing with someone at a desk!

Of course in reality, Kevin would also have two dead burglars in his house to contend with.

AnotherOneWithNoGoodName · 04/12/2021 10:28

@MargaretThursday but did anyone know that at the time? I wouldn't give one up if someone was just shouting they needed one, but I probably would if someone approached me and explained. And there probably wasn't time to explain while people were actually getting into taxis.

Beautiful3 · 04/12/2021 10:34

They all have plans for Christmas otherwise they wouldn't be travelling at that time of year. If they swapped then realistically it meant they'd miss their own Xmas plans. I can't see anyone doing that, when annual leave and arrangements e.g. Hotel, transportation etc has been made.

My parents got as far as the end of the road without my sister when we were v little. They left her in her carry cot on the kitchen table.

We left DD2 in her car seat in a church once, after a christening.

She was only about 10 weeks old and we'd kind of pushed her under a pew out of the way. She was fast asleep.

We both thought the other one would get her.

FourTeaFallOut · 04/12/2021 10:39

They were all utter shits to Kevin. That's been the biggest shift for me, watching as an adult. Not just leaving him behind but carrying on like he is an utter arsehole and then it's him that redeemed at the end of the movie by becoming a more independent kid and everyone is then impressed that he coped? Like he had a lesson to learn? Confused

I still watch it to drool over the house though. Blush

Absolutely. His great crime of "ruining" their fancy dinner of greasy take away pizza and coke. He's a fucking kid! Didn't he just shove another kid into a chair or something? Then was banished for it 😆

It's definitely a different experience to watch it as an adult.
