Original Home Alone - bartering to swap flights at Christmas

Xtraincome · 04/12/2021 08:48

Just watching Xmas movies with DDs.

Is it me or does anyone else feel that if Catherine O Haras character was desperate to get home to her kid in Chicago from Paris in 2021, that within minutes someone would have given up their flight for her?

She had to offer one elderly lady $500, shit loads of jewellery and a purse to get to a layover in Portland or Dallas?

I'd like to think that today, even if it was virtue signalling (although I think it wouldn't be necessarily), that someone would just be more forgiving without needing to be offered loads of material goods to help someone out?

I am aware that there would not be as much of a movie if she got back to Kevin in a timely manner.

@Xtraincome

YABU. No way would anyone have given up their flight. And especially not at Christmas. In many cases, people would have been waiting HOURS at the airport, and in some cases, their plane would have been delayed by an hour or more. Like hell would anyone give up their ticket/seat for a random woman they don't know.

If the situation was that dire, the airline/airport should have helped the woman. The onus should not have been on another passenger to 'be kind' and let her have their ticket.

As for the older couple who gave up their seats/tickets, and decided to leave another day, where did they stay? They would already have checked out of their hotel. Did they just sleep on the airport floor? I LOVE this film, but there are a few unanswered questions! I agree there are quite a few plotholes! It's still a wonderful film to watch at Christmas though.

And if anyone wants to visit that EXQUISITE house. Grin

@FourTeaFallOut the house has become available on Airbnb

I don't think you can always tell - otherwise there wouldn't be so many successful scammers out there.

I think the market for scamming people into taking a later flight is pretty low!

The thing is, someone else may be in need, but other people need to catch their flights for a variety of genuine reasons too - they may have to be back at work, have sick relatives to visit or whatever.

Airlines can ask, but nobody is obliged to say yes.

True, and I would be more amenable if requested by the airline, with compensation thrown in for me.

What annoys me is the people who don’t pre-book seats together with their kids and then expect everyone else to play musical chairs to accommodate them. Jigsaw aka Kevin needs to sort them out.

@delilahbucket

If we are talking realistically, who goes on holiday and actually manages to forget one of their kids?! 😂
happened to my sister. she has a large family and their neighbours as well (kids in an out of each house, swapping clothes...)

oh how we take the piss of that one Grin

Youdoyoutoday · 04/12/2021 11:39

I still blame the neighbour kid!! How rude was he just getting in to the van and nosing through the bags??

I saw that! Ironically they have a maximum of four guests for the stay and I'd have to leave one of my kids at home Grin

I suspect most people wouldn't believe her. You'd expect a legit request to come from the airline.
Youdoyoutoday · 04/12/2021 11:49

How funny! But strange it's only 4 guests when the house is so massive!

FourTeaFallOut · 04/12/2021 11:58

I've no idea. Maybe they only have the rooms open which are on the movie? So that would be just Biff's room and the parents room - four guests? Is that right? I'm doubting myself as I write that. Surely Kevin's room must have made it but I can't think when Confused

Kevin slept in the attic the night before and then in the parents room, IIRC!

Haha! This post has lit up over my morning out with DDs, who spent the whole time asking when we could watch Home Alone 2 Grin

I definitely get the point many of you are making. But I guess it just gripes me that it seemed way harder than it should have been AND that there was not 1 passenger who wouldn't show up for their flight.

I like to think if I had nowhere urgent to be I'd have stepped up. Not sure dh would let me without a mighty row though!!!
