Help me name my baby

Not an aibu in the least but for polls and traffic, help a mama out pretty please

Baby boy born this week is still nameless…
Dh loves the name Sami
I prefer Aiden

(Both are Muslim names just in case anyone is wondering why not Samuel)

YABU- call him Sami
Yanbu- call him Aiden.

If it swings the vote in my favour, DH missed the birth as he was our childcare for our toddler and it was ouchy

Sami is a nice name.

xILikeJamx · 02/12/2021 15:32

I'd go with Sami purely on the basis that there's millions of Aidans around where I live (although it's the Irish version rather than the Muslim one)

bbqpringle · 02/12/2021 15:47

I prefer Sami

Notonthenewrug · 02/12/2021 15:53

Congratulations. I much prefer Sami.

Skeumorph · 02/12/2021 15:54

Sami to me is the name for indigenous Lapland folk! Also would hear it as Sammy, which I don't like at all, though I don't mind Sam.

So no - I would go for Aiden.
I don't know any young Aidens/Aidans - it's a lovely name.

PooWillyNameChange · 02/12/2021 15:54

I think Sami sounds too much like a nickname to most (if you're in UK) so I'd go Aiden.

I also like Aiden because it's ambiguous. My parents gave me an Arabic name and I have spent most of my life wondering if I'm experiencing prejudice on paper (e.g. CVs) whereas my sister had a more ambiguous name (for example Sara, but not...) and I was always jealous.

That's just my own issues though, and I get that you shouldn't have to think about that...

Skeumorph · 02/12/2021 15:54

Also - I assume the baby will have his surname?

Then you get final say on first name!

CoalCraft · 02/12/2021 15:54

Sami is a much nicer name

Congratulations!

Kanfuzed123 · 02/12/2021 15:55

Ah you guys… you’re killing me lol. Secretly wondering if DH has several Mns accounts now (joking of course)!

Appreciate your honesty!

My thing was, does it sound a bit chavvy? You know like certain nicknames as names like Tammi (sorry if there’s any Tammi’s reading Flowers)

OP posts:
DeepaBeesKit · 02/12/2021 15:57

Both nice names but alas I'm a believer, you gave birth so you trump on the names.

Kanfuzed123 · 02/12/2021 16:00

In the spirit of full MN transparency, baby will have DH last name but will have my late dads name as a middle name and then my surname as a middle name too.

But still I DID have to do the ouchy birth part…. They even had to break my waters to speed things up lol 😂

Don't like that word but kind of similar, yes. I see your point.

Sami sounds like 'Sammy' which sounds like a cutesy slightly silly shortening of Samuel. Whereas Sam sounds much nicer and more adult/sensible. Unless it will be pronounced more Sah-mee?

Just prefer Aiden really! And yes - it's less ethnically identifiable in the UK. Which, sadly, can sometimes be a useful thing, as previous posters comment.

GoodnightGrandma · 02/12/2021 16:17

I prefer Aiden. Sami sounds like a nickname.

housemaus · 02/12/2021 16:21

I think Aiden - I actually prefer Sami spelled that way, it's lovely, but I think he'll forever get people assuming it's Sammy and I don't love that!

Also think I agree with you about how Sami sounds like a particular type of nickname... is the surname obviously Muslim (culturally/traditionally speaking - obviously anyone with any last name can be Muslim!)? Cos if I met a Sami [Culturally Muslim Last Name] I'd think it sounded lovely, whereas if it was Sami Smith or something in my head that would read as "Sammy Smith" and I'd like it less. Which is ridiculous I know Grin

Aiden's a lovely name, too - lower end of top 100, so well known enough but not super common. Congratulations on your baby and extra congratulations on doing it without DH there for moral support! Grin

flashpaper · 02/12/2021 16:25

I like both names, but I'm gonna say Sami, purely because I work with a Sami and he's just lovely. Always has a smile on his face, always happy, a "life's too short to be miserable" kinda guy.

Mydogisagentleman · 02/12/2021 16:30

Aidan 100%
I worked with a woman called Samia, pronounced Sham-ya
If Sami is pronounced with a Sh should, it reminds me of a chamois leather to clean cars

Mydogisagentleman · 02/12/2021 16:30

Sh sound

YuleHaveAWonderfulChristmas · 02/12/2021 16:47

Aiden is a great name !

LuckyAmy1986 · 02/12/2021 16:56

Aiden

Kanfuzed123 · 02/12/2021 16:56

It’s pronounced like Sammy or Sam x

Chocolatewheatos · 02/12/2021 16:57

Sami, there are loads of Aidens and its more commonly a boys name where I am so that might not be fun for her.

User5252727 · 02/12/2021 16:58

I like both, but really like Aiden. It's a beautiful name.

IncompleteSenten · 02/12/2021 16:58

They're both nice.
Can you use both of them?
Sami Aiden sounds lovely.

Lndnmummy · 02/12/2021 17:00

Aiden

ShowOfHands · 02/12/2021 17:02

Love Sami. Aiden is not in the same league.

I had two v difficult labours and deliveries but names were decided between us. I don't think it's a bargaining chip tbh.
