Bloody Christmas music

ThesecondLEM · 02/12/2021 07:26

Every year from November onwards I'm subjected to fucking wailing Mariah and the announcement that santa-claus is coming to town. Thank fuck wizard never got their wish.

Interspersed in that are a few decent songs and the greatest song of all time by the pogues. The decent songs make me emotional and anxious.

I like Christmas, I do but by the time it comes I'm practically homicidal.

I was on a shift at work yesterday where I was able to tune to classic FM for a bit of background music and it was bliss.

Just started a new job and the first thing I noticed was the fecking radio. I thought I'd escaped it.

Am I just a miserable old bag?

Yanbu it's torture

Littleants · 02/12/2021 07:30

I don’t get the fascination with Mariah Carey. She used to be able to sing, since when all she has done is screech. ThankGod for headphones.

ArblemarchTFruitbat · 02/12/2021 07:31

Smooth Chill seems to be Christmas free so far. I often listen to Smooth Radio, but it started with the Christmas songs last week, so I've migrated to Smooth Chill in the evenings.

Classic FM also started its Christmas music yesterday, but I don't mind a few carols so I have that on while I am working during the day.

Youngatheart00 · 02/12/2021 07:32

I find it depends on my mood

Im highly stressed at the moment and not feeling at all festive, so the Christmas tunes are grating on me - implying a sense of holiday fun when life is anything but at the moment.

suckingonchillidogs · 02/12/2021 07:33

It must be awful not being able to get away from it at work. I always feel sorry for retail workers subjected to it everyday for weeks on end, they must be sick to death of it by Xmas day.

Although I NEVER get sick of Wombling Merry Christmas!

GreenWhiteViolet · 02/12/2021 07:33

YANBU. I heartily dislike most of the standard set of Christmas pop songs, and even the ones I do like I don't want to listen to until a week or two before Christmas. I'd be driven mad if I worked somewhere that played them all day.

My Christmas experience has improved markedly since I started doing all the shopping online a few years ago. So much less stress and annoyance.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 02/12/2021 07:36

Absolute 90s doesn't have christmas music

TolkiensFallow · 02/12/2021 07:37

I agree I LOVE christmas but it doesn’t start in October/November.

PJ04JCW · 02/12/2021 07:39

YANBU. I had to suffer Chris Rea three times in a six hour shift on Monday. I'm taking over the dial tomorrow!

BogRollBOGOF · 02/12/2021 07:40

In the 90s on Radio 2, it would build up gradually by the week, so first week was very low key with the odd Kate Bush, George Michael type December songs and build up to the IT'S CHRIIIIISTMAS!!! rather than launching in from the 1st December.

ThesecondLEM · 02/12/2021 07:52

My new team luuurrrrvve Christmas so I'll mostly have to suffer it.

I actually don't like the radio at work as I have to be in the right mood for music and if I'm not it triggers my anxiety. I am however in a minority of one so I don't expect them to not have it on. I do sneakily turn the volume down when I can.

I'd hate having the radio on all day at work - regardless of what songs are playing.

MLMshouldbeillegal · 02/12/2021 08:13

I am not a music radio fan but generally have Heart on in the car. But they started playing that shite mid-November so no longer.

It's just so BORING. Noddy Holder has been screeching "it's Christmas" since 1973. Wizzard's song was released the same year. The Shakin' Stevens one was released in 1985 and Wham in 1984. Mariah's warble in 1994. I am almost 50 and these songs have been played on repeat, every December, all December FOR MY ENTIRE ADULT LIFE.

Just awful. It's like that thing the CIA do where they lock suspects in a room and play Justin Bieber on repeat until they beg for mercy.

Podcasts all the way. And definitely not one with a "festive flavour".

FrancescaContini · 02/12/2021 08:13

I agree - it’s hideous. I have just switched over from Radio 2 as I can’t bear all the jingling and jangling, really sets my teeth on edge. It’s tiresome. Radio 3 is calming and zero mention of the two loathsome “C” words.

FrancescaContini · 02/12/2021 08:15

Oh God, I too would be begging for mercy after an hour. It’s mindless.
ichundich · 02/12/2021 08:19

Treat yourself to a Spotify subscription for £10/month this Christmas and choose the music you like with no adverts, job done.

ichundich · 02/12/2021 08:21

And for work: headphones (noise cancelling).

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 02/12/2021 08:22

I have heard all of these cunty songs 1billion fucking times - is everyone 2 years old "again again"?

Arrrrgghhhhhhhhhhhhh YANBU

Exactly Shakin wanker can fuck right off - he wasn't any good in 1985 and the passage of time hasn't improved things.
WildRosie · 02/12/2021 08:26

Listen to the Nat King Cole Christmas song. It's a million miles from the Mariah Carey nonsense, a sentimental seasonal ballad. I love it.

MLMshouldbeillegal · 02/12/2021 08:33

That was the whole plot of "About a Boy" wasn't it, the adult male character had written one of those dreadful Christmas songs which he was quite embarrassed about, but which provided enough money to let him live comfortably in a plush London flat without a job.

Noddy Holder must be fucking minted.

ArtichokeAardvark · 02/12/2021 08:33

I once temped as a sales rep in the Harrods Christmas department. The department opens in October and closes in mid January. I was subjected to the same 10 track cd of Christmas songs for 4 months, non stop. I can never listen to Elton's Step into Christmas again...

True but there are loads of brilliant newer Christmas songs - am firing up the Kindle for the Amazon Christmas playlist.
the80sweregreat · 02/12/2021 08:54

I love Mariah, but only played once!
The worst one is Mc cartney's ' wonderful Christmas time ' it is dirge and should not played at any time. Ditto ' mull of Kintyre '
Slade and wizard have had their day too.

the80sweregreat · 02/12/2021 08:59

The big stars love a Christmas song or album.
It's 'Micky Bubbles ' favorite time of year.
Gary Barlow has one out now too I saw on tv !
.. drives me mad!!
