Bloody Christmas music

ThesecondLEM · 02/12/2021 07:26

Every year from November onwards I'm subjected to fucking wailing Mariah and the announcement that santa-claus is coming to town. Thank fuck wizard never got their wish.

Interspersed in that are a few decent songs and the greatest song of all time by the pogues. The decent songs make me emotional and anxious.

I like Christmas, I do but by the time it comes I'm practically homicidal.

I was on a shift at work yesterday where I was able to tune to classic FM for a bit of background music and it was bliss.

Just started a new job and the first thing I noticed was the fecking radio. I thought I'd escaped it.

Am I just a miserable old bag?

We currently have Christmas music playing at work. Thankfully, we are allowed to wear our own headphones so we can listen to our own music

MLMshouldbeillegal · 02/12/2021 11:22

I have just been subjected to michael buble wishing me a holly jolly Christmas in Tesco.

Fuck off Michael.

The supermarkets love him don't they ? Or when it gets the really crappy songs at the end of the CD it can be teeth gritting !! I remember one year with a bit of a cold ( pre covid ) walking round Tesco's and ' Santa Claus is coming to town ' blaring over the tannoy !!
.. It was awful !
the80sweregreat · 02/12/2021 12:01

I just do not associate Gary Barlow with Christmas! The tax dodging tight arse can do one !!

DickMabutt73962 · 02/12/2021 13:57

Humbug!

AFAIK Magic is the only station exclusively playing Christmas music.

On that note, they LOVE playing this one -- why? Sounds like a strangled cat

DickMabutt73962 · 02/12/2021 13:59

@the80sweregreat

I love Mariah, but only played once! The worst one is Mc cartney's ' wonderful Christmas time ' it is dirge and should not played at any time. Ditto ' mull of Kintyre ' Slade and wizard have had their day too.
I don't get why Paul McCartney's song is popular, it's completely unimaginative in music and lyrics and could have been written by a 3 year old.
the80sweregreat · 02/12/2021 14:05

That Pretenders one is awful ..
If that comes on I turn it off.

Otherpeoplesteens · 02/12/2021 14:19

I don't know what's worse, the endless repeats of the tired old crap that passes for Christmas music in the UK or the music companies' love of adding a 'bonus' Christmas track at the end of a non-Christmas CD, so that you have to remember to jump to the stop button on the CD player if you don't want to be assaulted by Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas when you play your Collabro CD in August.

MobMoll · 02/12/2021 19:35

YANBU- Christmas musical is so manic and intense. Awful. And I agree about the sale old crap being rolled out year after year. The worst offender is Paul McCartney’s Wonderful Christmastime, followed by Mariah screeching.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 02/12/2021 19:39

I love all the Christmas music - from the most serious classical to the completely kitsch - but in moderation. I’m not going out much, so I’m not getting exposed to wall-to-wall Christmas music - that would drive me insane.

Elphame · 02/12/2021 20:01

It's awful.

I went into Sainsbury's this afternoon and was subjected to some dreadful "Christmas" music that sounded like cats being strangled. Even the more upbeat of the songs are played at a dirge like speed. How the staff stand it I'll never know.

I normally shop at Waitrose where it is blissfully quiet so this was a nasty shock! I won't be going back again even if I do run out of Marmite XO before Christmas

the80sweregreat · 02/12/2021 20:18

I can tolerate Mariah , I do love that Christmas song
I try the big note , but it never goes well :(
Last Christmas is boring now , it had its day in 1984 !!

Toddlerteaplease · 02/12/2021 22:21

YANBU I hate secular Christmas music with a passion. Proper choral Christmas music, I love and listen to all year round. Someone has dug out a radio at work and I want to through it out the window.

RobertaFirmino · 03/12/2021 01:30

I can't bear it either. It reminds me of a really sad time in my life though, even things like The Nutcracker, so I just keep headphones in when shopping and listen to something else completely.

the80sweregreat · 03/12/2021 13:21

I was trying to avoid people in the shop for a few bits and then mc cartney came on.
I'm not having a ' wonderful Christmas time '
I feel for the staff as this will be played on a loop until the 1st Jan I suppose :( they have it worse than me! They should be saved the noise ! Save the retail staff!!
They have suffered enough these past few years!!

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 03/12/2021 13:23

I LOVE IT! December is my fave month because of the build up to christmas.

TheWinterChild · 03/12/2021 13:31

OMG Ed Sheeran and Elton John, that’s going to be a classic, I lost someone close this year and it’s very poignant for everyone I think.
Sorry but I do love Christmas music and I don’t care that it’s the same ones over and over again 🤣

eastegg · 03/12/2021 14:06

@Letsallscreamatthesistene

I LOVE IT! December is my fave month because of the build up to christmas.
If only the build up was just in December. You must have at least 2 favourite months now 😁
Tumbleweed101 · 03/12/2021 18:57

I work in a nursery so we have a whole variety of xmas music all day at this time of year from children's to general. I'm quite happy to listen to it from now as it's only about three weeks and helps the build up for home too now my family is older..

Andylion · 03/12/2021 20:00

I never heard the Mariah song until I saw Love Actually. I was so lucky!

I am a huge Springsteen fan. I remember when I was teenager in the early ‘80s, and how thrilled I was when I heard Santa Claus is Coming to Town on the radio. I probably only heard it four times each December.

A few years ago it started to be on the Christmas playlists of a lot of stores in my Canadian city. I remember thinking how overplaying had ruined the song for me when I was standing in line in Shoppers Drug Mart buying tampons.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 03/12/2021 20:03

@eastegg I do! But I find the November build up is very lack lustre, so I save myself for December. My rule is no active participation until 1 Dec

KarmaStar · 03/12/2021 20:40

Yes you are bu and a mob😀

19Bears · 03/12/2021 20:44

Oh god, I'm with you @ThesecondLEM I hate it. There are songs I do like, some of the older stuff (Greg Lake etc and more traditional carol-y music) but cannot stand the usual pop stuff that gets trotted out. I particularly hate Santa Baby. And this time of year, my Saturday night peace in Sainsbury's is shattered by it. Also, I find it very emotional and triggering. Christmas is great when you're loved up and happy, but if you're not, it can be heartbreaking to hear of all the romance you should be enjoying. I know I'm too soft for my own good, but to spend any time in shops trying to hold back tears is not my idea of fun. The whole atmosphere of Christmas can be really hard for so many people.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 03/12/2021 22:48

What gets me is there are so many Christmas songs out there. Hundreds by now surely, yet radio stations and supermarkets etc. always play the same ones over and over again. Why?
No wonder people get fed up of it.

tallduckandhandsome · 03/12/2021 23:03

I can’t imagine a radio at my office. It would be removed sharpish.

YANBU, I would hate this.
