Is a desk an acceptable birthday present?

Dd turns 10 just after christmas. She doesnt know what she wants for her birthday aside from one single thing that her Grandmother has already arranged to buy her.

Dd loves writing and drawing and does a lot of it both in her room and downstairs at the coffee table.

I have an idea of buying her a desk for her room, swivel chair (which she loves sitting in whenever we go anywhere with one), and filling the desk with lots of different paper, pens, a nice lamp etc.

It's a head start on her needing one for secondary school anyways, but is it naff to give it as a gift?

We are also swapping her bed (single) to the spare double when we are off over christmas, so that plus the desk will make her room more grown up.

Is this naff?

Sounds like a great idea to me!

Sounds like a lovely gift that she'll enjoy and get use out of!! Practical gifts are the best IMO, no random things she won't use / want in 6 months time 🎁

My sister got a desk for Christmas one year. Santa couldn’t quite be arsed wrapping it and just left a bit of paper over it like a table cloth runner. That made us laugh!

A really memorable present because of the size and a nice story as to why - sounds great, go for it!

hopingforabrighterfuture2021 · 01/12/2021 19:52

No, it’s not naff, it’s really lovely!

Ihavenoideawhereitis · 01/12/2021 19:53

Well I would have absolutely loved that at her age especially if it was filled with stationery like you plan to.

PlumManor · 01/12/2021 19:54

I would too! And in time it will evolve into a dressing table too.

Brilliant idea.

everywhichway · 01/12/2021 19:55

I was bought one when I was little and I loved it to bits!

SmallestInTheClass · 01/12/2021 19:56

We got my DD one a couple of years ago and she loves it. We got a few little gifts like chocolate and pens so she had some smaller presents to have under the tree and put a wrapping paper bow on the desk.

Ah ds was desperate for a desk for his 5th birthday so off we toddled to IKEA and found an expanding one that should do him until seniors. For his 6th birthday he wants a set of bunks 🤣🤣 I should probably add that his birthday is just after Christmas 😁

Cleaningismycardio · 01/12/2021 19:59

Exact same position as you! My daughter is getting this as part of her Christmas. She also loves writing and drawing and has been wanting a more grown up room. Her friend got his room done out for his birthday a few months back with desk and gaming chair - they hav totally different interests and wanted desks for different reasons but he was chuffed to bits and loved showing it off. I think my girl will love her desk and I'm sure yours will too!

mamaoffourdc · 01/12/2021 20:00

I love this ❤️

I got a desk for Christmas one year when I was about that age. One of my all time favourite best presents. I felt so grown up. Got some stationery and things as well. I hate such a clear memory of sitting at my new desk colouring in pictures for a book I was making.

ChocolateCakeYum · 01/12/2021 20:03

My son is getting a desk for Christmas (filled with new stationary etc) so yes, in my book, it’s an excellent gift.

TheChippendenSpook · 01/12/2021 20:03

I got a desk for my 10th birthday and it's still one of the best presents I ever received 😊

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 01/12/2021 20:03

I think it sounds lovely!

Does she definitely want the double bed? I had one as an older child/ teen and I hated it, as it took up all the floor space. I had to have it apparently so I could give up my room for visitors when they came Hmm You can’t tell I’m still bitter, can you?

PleasantBirthday · 01/12/2021 20:04

My little girl is getting a piano stool along with other bits and pieces. It's what she really wants and she'll get loads of use from it. She has toys everywhere and frankly, I'd be amazed if she noticed more.

LettertoHermoine · 01/12/2021 20:05

Great idea, she will love it.

ShinyMe · 01/12/2021 20:06

I got a desk for my birthday once when I was maybe 7 or 8, and I loved it! It was a proper old fashioned school desk with a flippy lid and an inkpot and a groove for pencils, and it felt like something out of Malory Towers or something, I adored that desk. I was devastated when I went home one Christmas, when I was maybe late 30s, and it wasn't there in my old bedroom, and my mum had given it away to a neighbour's children!

This! Make sure she actually wants it! I had to have an extra bed in my room as a child growing up, for similar reasons and I hated the loss of floor space for playing.

I'm in my 30s and got very excited over the desk I got last year and the gaming chair I asked PIL for xmas this year

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 01/12/2021 20:09

She will love it! My DS got a desk for Christmas when he was that age (along with a chair and other accessories) and he was delighted with it.

ArblemarchTFruitbat · 01/12/2021 20:09

I got a desk for my 13th birthday and was very happy. That was the 1980s though Grin.

It came from MFI if anyone remembers MFI. I used to love going to MFI.

CustardGoodJamGoodMeatGood · 01/12/2021 20:09

Not naff at all. I'd have loved that when I was her age!

megletthesecond · 01/12/2021 20:11

I think it's lovely. Especially with a swivel chair and nice stationery.

MrsSkylerWhite · 01/12/2021 20:12

At 10 I craved a desk. My elder brother’s best friend bought a second hand school desk for me at the school fete and carried it all the way home. I think I’m still a little bit in love with him (at 58 Grin).
My mum painted it white and put a great big Brian Snail sticker on top.
I adored that desk, best gift ever. A swivel chair would have been beyond my wildest dreams 🤣
She’ll love it, especially kitted out with lovely stationary and pens.
