Is a desk an acceptable birthday present?

Dd turns 10 just after christmas. She doesnt know what she wants for her birthday aside from one single thing that her Grandmother has already arranged to buy her.

Dd loves writing and drawing and does a lot of it both in her room and downstairs at the coffee table.

I have an idea of buying her a desk for her room, swivel chair (which she loves sitting in whenever we go anywhere with one), and filling the desk with lots of different paper, pens, a nice lamp etc.

It's a head start on her needing one for secondary school anyways, but is it naff to give it as a gift?

We are also swapping her bed (single) to the spare double when we are off over christmas, so that plus the desk will make her room more grown up.

Is this naff?

Nice idea from the OP and good suggestions from other posters but

A desk that evolves into a dressing table?
Do you give her a bin to put all her aspirations in at the same time?

I'd have loved that when I was 10! Go for it.

When I was 15 my dad made me a solid pine bookcase for my birthday. I'm 52 now and its still one of my most prized possessions. A desk sounds like a lovely idea.

I think a desk is fine for a gift if she'll enjoy it, however, it's not a "basic necessity".

Definitely not a "basic necessity" that PP was wrong.

This is a lovely idea, and she'll love it.

I'd bloody love it!

That's a lovely thoughtful present and opens up a world of possibilities for other gift givers to furnish it with desk tidies, lovely stationery, pens etc. Paperchase, here we come!

No, please no. I remember on my 13th birthday my mum made a huge fuss about an amazing present she’d got me. It was one of those old fashioned desks where you lift the lids. I had to hold back the tears as I was so disappointed and I honestly wasn’t a grabby kid.

Yeah tbf we have a decent sized kitchen table for homework if we weren't able to get/have room for a desk.
