To not have accepted this lift?

Notavailablesoi · 28/11/2021 22:51

I was out with friends last night in our nearest city. At the end of the night, one friend's friend turned up to give her, her bf and two other friends a lift home.

They kindly offered me a lift, but it would have meant me having to sit on someone's knee and not have a seatbelt. It was also snowing, and had been on and off all day so it lying. I declined the lift and waited in the (very cold and long) queue.

I mentioned to another friend today how busy the city bad been and the length of the taxi queue, and that I'd been offered a lift. She said she'd have accepted the lift and I was over the top not to.

AIBU for refusing the lift?

YANBU.. Would have been dangerous AND illegal!

Clawdy · 28/11/2021 22:55

I'd have been tempted, but you were probably right. If it had been the alternative to walking home alone in the dark, that would have been different.

Notavailablesoi · 28/11/2021 23:24

Thanks. I felt a bit like I had made a fool of myself by saying no because I thought it was unsafe.

Did everyone else get a lift and leave you?

Notavailablesoi · 28/11/2021 23:33

Yes, @Chickychoccyegg. I was right next to the taxi rank though.

bit mean of the others to all leave you

as a teenager, definitely did this (BF with open top sports car that friends crammed in the back of) - but wouldn't now, esp with snow.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 29/11/2021 08:55

I don't think much of your friends tbh. When I used to go out (a million years ago admittedly) someone would have offered (insisted on) staying with me.
You were entirely right to refuse btw. Although I might not have.

TotallySuper · 29/11/2021 09:13

Do you know what i said YANBU but if it was a short distance and given how cold it was I'd probably have considered it! But of course you did the right thing in the end.

Notavailablesoi · 29/11/2021 18:04

It was a distance of three miles.

To be honest, I would have insisted on staying with a woman on her own, but that's another story.

I was actually really surprised that any of them thought that it was an okay suggestion to get into a car without a belt.

Always do what you feel comfortable with when it comes to risk taking. If you weren't comfortable with it, you were right not to take the lift. Personally I would have done though.

Crimeismymiddlename · 29/11/2021 18:54

You did the right thing, when I was young I would have thought nothing of it but now it’s just a risk not worth taking.

Carrotte · 29/11/2021 18:56

You're good. Better that than end up squashed in an accident.

CremeEggThief · 29/11/2021 18:58

YANBU for not accepting it, if you didn't want to, but YABU to be over-thinking it like you are!!! So what if someone else would have and you wouldn't? It doesn't make either of you right or wrong; different people make different choices!

NellieBertram · 29/11/2021 19:07

A load of drunk people cramming into a car with no seatbelts on a snowy/icy night sounds like the beginning of a horrendous public information film Grin

PurrBox · 29/11/2021 19:10

I certainly would have taken the lift, unless I felt like walking. You should do whatever you want though!

VioletPetals · 29/11/2021 19:10

This happened to many moons ago…. I was made to feel like I was being very silly to refuse and I was very disappointed/pissed off that I was left alone to wait for and get a taxi home.

I decided never to go out with those friends again!

Suzanne999 · 29/11/2021 19:13

Your gut instinct told you not to do it, you did the right thing. Cold wait for a cab but you got home safe ( and I do think a friend should have waited with you)

StoneofDestiny · 29/11/2021 19:13

Seatbelts are compulsory.

NC101NC · 29/11/2021 19:19

I wouldn't. Isn't worth the risk.
But I also wouldn't leave you in your own waiting for a taxi! They could have at least waited until one came!

BigYellowHat · 29/11/2021 19:23

I’m surprised that every single one of them left you just to save a few quid Shock

521Jeanie · 29/11/2021 19:24

I'm a stickler for doing the right thing and would not have taken the lift.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 29/11/2021 19:29

OP wasn't left alone in the middle of nowhere she was in a queue at a taxi rank which means there were plenty of people around. I would have probably taken the lift rather than wait in the cold.

JacquelineCarlyle · 29/11/2021 19:29

I wouldn't have accepted the lift. (I wouldn't be annoyed with them though for leaving me to get a taxi, unless I'd expected to share a taxi home with one of them.)

gofg · 29/11/2021 19:30

YANBU and were very sensible - but I have to admit that I probably would have taken the lift.

gofg · 29/11/2021 19:32

Incidentally, all those posters saying someone should have waited with OP, did you miss the part where she was in a long queue?
