To not have accepted this lift?

I was out with friends last night in our nearest city. At the end of the night, one friend's friend turned up to give her, her bf and two other friends a lift home.

They kindly offered me a lift, but it would have meant me having to sit on someone's knee and not have a seatbelt. It was also snowing, and had been on and off all day so it lying. I declined the lift and waited in the (very cold and long) queue.

I mentioned to another friend today how busy the city bad been and the length of the taxi queue, and that I'd been offered a lift. She said she'd have accepted the lift and I was over the top not to.

AIBU for refusing the lift?

YANBU. Fine for her to say she'd have accepted, ridic for her to try to shame you for not accepting. And I'll admit when I was a bit younger and broke I would have gone, and legality be damned. But your boundaries about your own personal safety and your values are yours alone - distrust anyone who tries to erode them. I respect you for doing what's right for you. No one else is harmed by your refusing.

For a 3 mile journey i would have offered to do one run then come back for the rest. No way would i take anyone without a seatbelt never mind in the snow. I also think its shit that no one waited.

I'd have taken the lift too.

Last week I heard of a 20 year old local woman taken to hospital with severe head injuries after being in the back of a car that crashed with no seat belt. I don't know if she was sitting on someone's lap at the time, but it doesn't sound pleasant either way. She was found in the road.

YANBU and the driver was an absolute twat for even considering it.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 29/11/2021 19:51

For three miles, if I was the driver I would have done two trips.

No way would I have taken that lift. After all the safety films made, with un-belted passengers hitting and killing others through being thrown from their seat.. I'm really shocked to see how many people think it's OK to travel in a car on someone's lap. I feel like I've stepped back into the 70's. You did the right thing. Sad though that you were left on your own to wait for a cab.

You did the right thing. Shocked at some saying they would take the risk. I've seen first hand this scenario ending in a crash and it was horrific.

You did the right thing. Very shitty of them to leave you on your own. I would've expected one of them to get a cab with you.
