To not read a thread if the OP posts only once?

MahMahMahMahCorona · 28/11/2021 12:19

Time and again I will read an OP, become slightly invested, skim the responses and triage for an update, only to be disappointed if the OP has only written that very first post. Over 24 hours ago.

AIBU to simply move on to the next post? Does anyone else feel it is a little strange to write asking for support / help / opinions on AIBU, and then never update the thread?!

Soubriquet · 28/11/2021 12:24

Same. Especially if a thread is 14 pages long

PyjamaFan · 28/11/2021 12:24

Me too

mynameiscalypso · 28/11/2021 12:25

Yup. I always filter on the OP's first post and see if they've posted again. Otherwise I'm not going to waste my life reading pages of people saying exactly the same thing and no response from OP.

HoardingSamphireSaurus · 28/11/2021 12:26

How will you know if they post once or more without, erm, reading the thread?

BorisKilledMyHusband · 28/11/2021 12:27

OP hasn’t updated. Does that mean we shouldn’t bother reading this thread?

LunaticLandscape · 28/11/2021 12:27

I don't mind actually. I don't get invested in threads and enjoy reading various opinions and philosophies on life. Sometimes a question gets a good discussion going, even without OPs input.
Feel much the same about zombie threads.
MN gives me a lot of food for thought

You can look at all OPS posts without reading other replies
HoardingSamphireSaurus · 28/11/2021 12:28

Even using See All requires reading. It's just one of those things. And sometimes the end of the thread is the best bit... posters making stuff up, berating the OP, making daft guesses about where they went...

On my app, I can press a funnel like thing top right corner and triage by OP....

It's a really good tip to click 'See All'.

Sometimes I just read the OP's posts on a long thread, and see how many there are over how long a period and how the story unfolds. It can be very illuminating.

Yes 😂

Cos how many unanswered posts means OP is a plopper?

It's not doable!

You can look at the opening post and if there isn’t a next post then they only posted once.
HoardingSamphireSaurus · 28/11/2021 12:30

I see we double cross posted

Sexnotgender · 28/11/2021 12:30

If it only says see all then they’ve just posted once.

dudsville · 28/11/2021 12:30

Same. I also don't read a thread if the title is asking for help and there are a lot of responses.

Yes I do agree with this and sometimes when a thread is derailed it can make for good humour. Particularly if the OP simply doesn't respond.

It bothers me however if the thread is 14 pages long and the initial post is an essay. And then silence. Dust bunnies rolling across the screen. I find it a little frustrating. Probably shouldn't... probably should get out more 🤣

I don't know why people bother to post on threads if the OP can't be bothered.

MahMahMahMahCorona · 28/11/2021 12:47

@mynameiscalypso

Yup. I always filter on the OP's first post and see if they've posted again. Otherwise I'm not going to waste my life reading pages of people saying exactly the same thing and no response from OP.

This is what I have now resorted to. Because as @WallaceinAnderland says, what really is the point in posting if the OP disappears?

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 28/11/2021 12:48

Sometimes if an OP posts (usually something click baity) then disappears for a day or two, and someone says 'OP seems to have disappeared', back the OP comes with-

'I haven't got time to be on MN all day like you saddos' or something like that. Hmm Grin

LagunaBubbles · 28/11/2021 12:49

You can highlight the OPS posts to make them coloured and stand out.

HoardingSamphireSaurus · 28/11/2021 12:52

Yeah. Isn't it a pity you can't do that to posters who respond?

I'll have to hide this now. As everyone will keep on my first, tongue in cheek, post and miss the following ones.

Kendoddsdadsdogsdadsdead · 28/11/2021 12:52

Yanbu. If I am interested in the OP, I immediately click on 'see all'. If they have only posted once and the thread is a few pages long, I won't bother reading the thread.

Totally agree. I always check if the OP has responded and don’t bother if not.

SirYawnsAlot · 28/11/2021 12:56

Yes but often OP innocently posts on AIBU and the amount of vitriolic, goady responses sends them running to the hills.

It would be interesting to see how many of these one time posters are new members.
