To not read a thread if the OP posts only once?

MahMahMahMahCorona · 28/11/2021 12:19

Time and again I will read an OP, become slightly invested, skim the responses and triage for an update, only to be disappointed if the OP has only written that very first post. Over 24 hours ago.

AIBU to simply move on to the next post? Does anyone else feel it is a little strange to write asking for support / help / opinions on AIBU, and then never update the thread?!

I don't bother reading a long thread when the OP hasn't come back to respond pages later.

Almost as irritating as the posters who respond several times but refuse to even acknowledge that they have been asked the same question over and over for clarification/context (e.g. how old is your child?/are you married?/do you own the property?)

Or OPs who do come back several times, but all of their responses consist solely of "yes" or "no, it isn't" with absolutely no context or quoting to indicate what they might be responding to.

Newestname002 · 28/11/2021 15:08

Yep me too. I see people getting very invested and the OP either doesn't respond anymore or gives uninvolved responses to posters, so I tend just move on. 🌹

TheseBootsWereMadeForSitting · 28/11/2021 15:13

This is the way I see it.

If the OP can't be arsed, neither can I.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 28/11/2021 15:46

if under the first post it says see all then that is the only post, if it says see next and see all then there are more posts.

ThinWomansBrain · 28/11/2021 15:50

I'll usually read through for a bit, then see if OP has responded.

I started a fairly lighthearted post recently - the initial responses negative bordering on rude, so left it for a few hours. When I returned, a more mixed range of opinions, including an "OPs not been back" so engaged with the conversation from there on.

The ones that annoy me are when responses are unanimously YABU and OP keeps popping up to say how reasonable she is.

MulticatHouse · 28/11/2021 15:52

Same, especially if it is long and over a couple of days.

KeepTwirling · 28/11/2021 16:59

I do this too but not on every thread. If I'm interested in the OP and possible updates, I'll just go straight to 'See next' or 'See all'.

If I'm interested in what posters are saying (for the popcorn), I'll read everything. This one I do more often because I try not to go into the serious/cry for help type posts especially when there are many posts in already, unless I have something new to add.

Not on the app it doesn't - I didn't realise this on the desktop version as I always use on MN on my foan.

Yes I agree - and other PP have said the same. If the query is valid, and the responses helpful and along the lines of what I could offer in support, I might hold off from responding if there are already 250 positive responses.

Those threads often turn into an interesting debate between people replying though.

You have to assume the OP' s post was a made up load of tosh though.

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 28/11/2021 19:42

Everyone's got to have a first post though. can't quite remember mine it was 2003 /2004 . I'd feel intimidated posting now though. There werent so many boards , only a couple I think , very easy to navigate and there wasnt 50 thousand posters. And people were nicer , mN wasnt as bad with the rude posters it has now
People were much more supportive
I'm not saying everyone on here now is rude but some comments are harsh , rude and unnecessary I'm not surprised some don't come back

GetTheFlockOutOfHere · 28/11/2021 19:55

Yep same here. Annoys me too... It's very annoying, and it's always the, shall we say, provocative/goady threads. Wink

ddl1 · 28/11/2021 20:36

No. I would read a thread or not, only according to whether the topic of the thread is or isn't of interest to me.

k1233 · 28/11/2021 20:49

Yep, I read the first post and if I feel invested, look to see if the OP has posted again. If they haven't I move on. I always use the see next button to read the OPs updates.

LindyLou2020 · 28/11/2021 20:50

I've never seen an option to "see next".
And to "see all", don't you have to subscribe to Mumsnet Premium?

k1233 · 28/11/2021 21:14

No, I'm just on the page via phone. I think my settings are to see OPs posts in green or something like that.

Bagamoyo1 · 28/11/2021 21:22

@HoardingSamphireSaurus

How will you know if they post once or more without, erm, reading the thread?
Because underneath the post it says “OP’s posts - see next / see all”. If it says just “see all” then you know that the original post is the only one.
