Real or fake?

Tree..what do you go for? Dp always wants fake and I love real and grew up loving the whole thing of going to choose one, the look of it etc.
We just got a new artificial one last year so Dp is complaining that I’d like to get a real one, especially now Dd is 3 and it would be a nice experience choosing one.

Aibu to just really prefer a real tree?

YANBU. We were going to get a fake one this year but I was a bit shocked by the price of them. It was cheaper to buy a real tree. I don't necessarily want refer a real tree but a nice fake one costs!

Skyll · 27/11/2021 16:18

I have a fake tree. But it’s personal preference surely? If you want a real tree then get one (I don’t because getting it home would be a hassle and I’ve pets and I worry about the needles)

Totalwasteofpaper · 27/11/2021 16:18

Real every time.

Fake ones that look decent are expensive/ represent poor value even in the sales and you then have the hassle of storing them too

RosiePosieDozy · 27/11/2021 16:19

I've never had a real tree. My parents don't have a real tree and I can't remember my grandparents having real trees. Maybe they had one a few years but I don't remember.

No one I know has a real tree. I'm not even sure that I've been in someone's house who has one.

HaroldSteptoesHorse · 27/11/2021 16:23

Had a real one a few Xmas’ ago wanted one as never ever had one. I was so disappointed, it was a big and bushy on the bottom and middle and then a huge long thin top bit that went up the angels arse. Back to a fake one

KurtWildesChristmasNamechange · 27/11/2021 16:28

I had a real one for the first time last year, absolutely loved it but it really made my DS allergies kick off. Back to artificial this year.

Pbbananabagel · 27/11/2021 16:34

Much prefer real but got a fake one last year as have v young children and I actually love it, it takes up less floor space and it’s flocked so like having a snowy wonderland in the house! Will go back to real when kids are much bigger and appreciate it

Lime37 · 27/11/2021 16:38

I always had a fake one growing up but my husband had real. He worn me in to getting a real one about 5 years ago and I have never looked back. I love going to pick one and getting a hot chocolate it’s a lovely family day out. We do use one of the company vans tho make it so much easier x

SparklyLeprechaun · 27/11/2021 16:39

We had real ones when I was little so I thought I'd continue the tradition. After a couple of years of cleaning needles off the carpets and lugging the thing to the recycling point I switched to a fake one and never looked back.

KatharinaRosalie · 27/11/2021 16:39

Always real ones, plastic tree is just not the same.

kowari · 27/11/2021 16:41

I have a real one in a pot that I bring inside at Christmas

SockFluffInTheBath · 27/11/2021 16:41

Real here.

Roominmyhouse · 27/11/2021 16:43

Fake, we don’t have the space for a real tree. We have had the same slimline tree for nearly 10 years so definitely had our moneys worth! Was thinking about buying a pre-lit one this year but it’s seems wasteful when the old tree is still fine.

SisterAgatha · 27/11/2021 16:44

Real. Looks better. And it’s a sensory experience, the smells and the feels. I tie orange and cinnamon on it with ribbon.

lollipoprainbow · 27/11/2021 16:45

Real every single time can't beat the smell and look and feel !

SickAndTiredAgain · 27/11/2021 16:46

My parents always have a massive real one and I do prefer it. But we don’t have a big enough car to bring home anything decent sized, plus my dad saws it up in the garden to get rid of it in pieces and neither me or DH are realistically going to do that. So we get a fake one for convenience.

Libertaire · 27/11/2021 16:46

Neither. Bah Humbug.

5foot5 · 27/11/2021 16:47

Always real. We had a wonky little fake one when I was a kid but for as long as I have had my own place I get the real thing. The only exception was the year DD was just starting to toddle and I thought it might be risky

LoveComesQuickly · 27/11/2021 16:48

Real

Crunchymum · 27/11/2021 16:50

Fake (full on kitsch) upstairs.
Real (tastefully decorated) downstairs.

Kite22 · 27/11/2021 16:52

Except you then have it for years to come, so, although the initial outlay is there, the actual "cost per year" is a fraction of the cost of buying real ones every year.

YA neither BU nor NBU - it is a personal preference if your budget allows you to make those choices. Now we can afford it, it is nice to have a real one, but it didn't make our Christmases any less lovely when the dc were little and we used our artificial one.

ParkheadParadise · 27/11/2021 16:52

Fake
We have 3 fake trees 🎄🎄 in our house.

Gertie75 · 27/11/2021 16:52

Fake, I always think the real ones look scruffy and I don't like the unevenness, they look too wide at the bottom then spindly at the top.

Also cost, I can't bring myself to spend money on something that will be thrown away after a month, some of the real ones are so expensive.

flashpaper · 27/11/2021 16:53

I always liked the idea of a real one. The smell, the feel, the way it looks. We had real trees growing up and I loved going to pick it and take it home.
In reality, they're sticky and messy with all the needles everywhere and I actually prefer how uniform a fake tree is. The amount of needles that fall off when you take it through a doorway is insane! I must have always picked the wrong real ones because mine were bushy at the bottom with a gap in the middle and looked ridiculous. I also like how I can attach my baubles on a fake tree by turning the end up. I've never had breakages with my fake tree.

FourEyesGood · 27/11/2021 16:53

Fake. I’ve had the same one since 1997 (it’s a Woolworths value one. The price sticker says it was £6.99). It looks a bit rubbish but that just adds to the appeal for me. Christmas shouldn’t be classy. Grin
