Greggs mince pies

Is it just me or have they gone downhill this year? Usually my absolute favourites, this year the mincemeat is runny and not as tasty as usual, pastry is a bit soggy? Anyone agree? I usually love them!

The only way to make mince pies edible is to smother them in cream

AutumnLeaves21 · 24/11/2021 20:17

Pointless comment but ok.

Right, can anyone tell me where us actually doing decent mince pies this year?

I had one from Gail’s that was like an Eccles cake. Not tried Greggs yet.

spookysoul · 24/11/2021 20:19

I know they’re vegan, don’t know if they always were or if it’s a new recipe. I still think they’re yummy.

tabulahrasa · 24/11/2021 20:19

I had one today... it was it was it’s usually lovely mince pieness.

Yours sounds undercooked, maybe there’s an issue in the one you bought them from?

MrsSkylerWhite · 24/11/2021 20:20

WheelieBinPrincess

Don’t know where you live: Booths mince pies are lovely. Failing that, Morrison’s are good too, really nice pastry.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 24/11/2021 20:20

Oh no Sad DH loves them, haven't tried them yet this year.

spookysoul · 24/11/2021 20:20

@WheelieBinPrincess morrisons and aldi have always been best for mince pies! (Not the super cheap aldi ones, the next best ones).

Voord · 24/11/2021 20:21

Only had one so far, a Marks & Spencer icing topped one.

I kind of disagree with the icing on principle but it was a big hit of sweetness with the mincemeat. Was buzzing for at least 90 minutes after before the inevitable crash.

The pastry was ABYSMAL. Please note the capitals for emphasis. Far too crumbly, breaking up when taking it out of the tin foil. Piss poor really.

GuckGuckDoose · 24/11/2021 20:22

Tesco Finest are awful this year, Sainsbury’s fancy range were very nice, really juicy fruit and pastry good.

AutumnLeaves21 · 24/11/2021 20:25

@spookysoul husband is convinced they’re a new vegan recipe and that’s why they’re not as nice! I thought they’d been vegan for a couple of years? Not certain though

@tabulahrasa I have actually had a box last week and a visit this week Blush for science, obviously!! Grin thought the first batch may have been a dud but wasn’t impressed with the second box either 😭

@GuckGuckDoose agree Tesco’s are awful, had one last week

WheelieBinPrincess · 24/11/2021 20:29

Ah feck it if they’re vegan!!!

Whostoblame · 24/11/2021 20:29

I ate a whole box the other week in one sitting, YABU Wink

spookysoul · 24/11/2021 20:29

@WheelieBinPrincess

Ah feck it if they’re vegan!!!
Why?
kowari · 24/11/2021 20:29

I only buy all butter ones, they taste wrong otherwise

WheelieBinPrincess · 24/11/2021 20:30

@spookysoul wasn’t impressed with the Morrison’s ones actually….Aldi is miles away but for a decent mince pie I might make the trip 😂

WheelieBinPrincess · 24/11/2021 20:30

@spookysoul

Because they won’t be nice.

Roussette · 24/11/2021 20:31

Which magazine had Iceland's luxury mince pies as top in taste tests. I had one today and they were delicious, I'm very fussy about what the pastry is like and it was gooooood

Lanaa · 24/11/2021 20:31

They're delicious as usual. Definitely the best shop bought mince pies. I find the baking does vary depending on the shop though. I bought a dozen on Saturday that were overdone and had hardly any sugar dusted on the top.

spookysoul · 24/11/2021 20:32

@WheelieBinPrincess they really are though. Greggs mince pies are very popular and have been for years. I know loads of people who love them.

Doofas · 24/11/2021 20:33

We had a nice big of fondant topped ones from Tesco. I'm not normally sure about a topped pie but this one was good.

EverNapping · 24/11/2021 20:33

Starbucks mince pie is fantastic this year. Shame about the price & lack of multipacks.

Crazycatlady202020 · 24/11/2021 20:34

The M&S 'best ever' mince pies from the bakery are absolutely delicious! Expensive, but in my opinion they are worth it
