Greggs mince pies

Is it just me or have they gone downhill this year? Usually my absolute favourites, this year the mincemeat is runny and not as tasty as usual, pastry is a bit soggy? Anyone agree? I usually love them!
@spookysoul husband is convinced they’re a new vegan recipe and that’s why they’re not as nice! I thought they’d been vegan for a couple of years? Not certain though
Yep, they're vegan friendly- I think they launched last year.

WheelieBinPrincess · 24/11/2021 20:34

Obviously the filling is easily vegan, but what do they use instead of butter for the pastry? Vegetable fat?

AutumnLeaves21 · 24/11/2021 20:34

@spookysoul have they always been vegan?

@WheelieBinPrincess margarine I would imagine

DialsMavis · 24/11/2021 20:35

They have been vegan for a while I think, so it isn't that

spookysoul · 24/11/2021 20:35

I’m sure they were vegan last year too, I remember finding out and being very impressed.
I have absolutely no idea how they are made…

Welcometothejingles · 24/11/2021 20:36

I think it's the palm oil they use as a butter substitute in the pastry which makes it taste weird.

FaceFullOfCake · 24/11/2021 20:36

@WheelieBinPrincess the ones like Eccles cakes might be puff pastry?

WheelieBinPrincess · 24/11/2021 20:36

Definitely trying Iceland’s this weekend then.

Lollypop701 · 24/11/2021 20:38

I only like Greggs!!!! Going to be very upset if they’ve changed

Badnightguaranteed · 24/11/2021 20:38

Deeeesgusting they are this year. Dry, dusty, fatty, flavourless. Yanbu op i was GUTTED with this years. Greggs have had all those messages all over their stores this year about missing ingredients and unavailable products so I guess mince pies are the latest casualty of covid and brexit and Boris 😕

AnyFucker · 24/11/2021 20:39

Costco. No contest.

HostessTrolley · 24/11/2021 20:40

I’m looking for nut free mince pies and nut free Christmas pudding this year due to a guest being allergic. The only nut free Christmas pud I’ve seen is free from everything else as well - gluten free alcohol free fun free etc. I want alcohol and flavour in it - maybe I need to make my own :(

LubaLuca · 24/11/2021 20:41

Booths are good, I ate 3 of them in the last 4 days to make sure it wasn't just luck that the first two were tasty.

I always read that Iceland ones are the best, so I'm going to make a little detour to get some when I'm out tomorrow evening. They'll tide me over until I start baking my own in December (my own are definitely the best Grin).

I had a Greggs one last year but I wasn't impressed with the pastry, it was sort of biscuity. The mincemeat was tasty enough though and less jammy than lots of shop bought ones.

frazzledfragglefromfragglerock · 24/11/2021 20:41

Costa mince pies. Second only to my homemade ones.

Roussette · 24/11/2021 20:41

Wheelie I've just looked at the box. They are 6 All Butter Mince pies with a Good Housekeeping Institute sticker on them.
I think (can't remember) they were £1.89 or 6.

They had 6 for £1, but not those.

spookysoul · 24/11/2021 20:42

I remember lidl mince pies being really good years & years ago, and then suddenly they went terrible.
I’m sure someone gave me a co-op mince pie last year and it was very nice.
My life is now being measured in mince pie experiences.

StillWeRise · 24/11/2021 20:42

make one! it's not difficult, just time consuming

spookysoul · 24/11/2021 20:44

To be fair I’ve never had a homemade mince pie I didn’t like. Even when me and DH made some and they exploded everywhere. Still tasted great.
My mom can’t cook for shit and her homemade mince pies are delicious 😂

Don’t know where you live: Booths mince pies are lovely. Failing that, Morrison’s are good too, really nice pastry.

I have come on to say Booths too. I keep threatening to make my own, but as I am the only one in the house that eats them, I prefer to buy. Quite like Aldi all butter, and the Aldi frangipane are nice, but not really a mince pie in my eyes.
JaffaCake70 · 24/11/2021 20:46

My favourites so far this year are Costa's, preferably alongside their Black Forest hot chocolate.. Yum!!

Cuppaand2biscuits · 24/11/2021 20:47

Someone bought some M&S ones into work and every one said how nice they were.
I usually love a greggs mince pie so that's very disappointing.

AutumnLeaves21 · 24/11/2021 20:53

Booths are great, and reasonably priced too.

Verysurprised · 24/11/2021 20:53

I really need a mince pie now! I normally try and hold out until Dec 1st.
I love the Sainsbury's bakery ones that come in a pack of 4 😋.

Do vegans eat palm oil if it means orangutans die from loss of habitat?
