To think I would be wasting A&Es time?

I stupidly stacked it down the stairs yesterday, I stepped off sideways thinking I was on the bottom and I wasn’t and landed on the top of my foot… this is the result.
It’s sore and stiff.. I wriggle my toes and I can walk (with difficulty) but I’m not sure if that’s because I don’t have a choice running round after my 10 month old and running the house!
Would you go and get this X Rayed? I’m in 2 minds about it, I can walk so it can’t be broken? So I’d be wasting their time surely? The pain radiates from that big bruise in the middle.

I would get that checked out OP. Not wasting A&Es time at all, although you may have a bit of a wait when you get there. Good luck.

NotAnotherPushyMum · 22/11/2021 21:11

Yes, that needs X-raying. Could just be soft tissue or it could be a broken metatarsal. I have dancing children and see similar injuries frequently, always need the X-ray.

DrFoxtrot · 22/11/2021 21:11

It could be broken, you need to have it examined and possibly x-rayed. Go to A&E or a walk in centre/ minor injuries unit with x-ray facilities.

DrFoxtrot · 22/11/2021 21:11

Nobody will think you're wasting time at all.

rrhuth · 22/11/2021 21:13

It looks like it needs an x-ray.

You had an accident. It is not wasting A&E's time to check for broken bones.

And btw, it is not incidents like this causing the issues in A&E - it is the problesm getting people admitted to other parts of the hospital.

DentalWorries · 22/11/2021 21:13

I bet that’s a broken metatarsal. I had one that looked very similar but also didn’t go to A&E for a while as I thought it couldn’t possibly be broken. Because I’d walked on it, I made it so much worse than it was and it took years to properly heal.

XenoBitch · 22/11/2021 21:14

I have done the exact same before... and it turned out to be broken

LolaSmiles · 22/11/2021 21:15

Soft tissue ankle injuries can be more painful and take longer to heal than breaks, but it probably needs an x ray.

If you have a minor injuries unit or urgent care unit, they can do x rays. In my area that's where injuries like this would be assessed, not A&E.

Twizbe · 22/11/2021 21:16

Have a look if there is a minor injuries unit near you.

Ours can x ray limbs and the wait isn't usually as long as A&E

Blush21 · 22/11/2021 21:18

My sister did similar and snapped quite a few ligaments needed painkillers and strapping up! She still get a niggle 10 years on. Definitely go to a&e or maybe minor injuries at least

arethereanyleftatall · 22/11/2021 21:19

I wouldn't do anything yet with that, just rest and elevate etc
But, i play hockey, and feel like I have a bruise like that every other match.
Probs best to listen to the majority though.

TokyoSushi · 22/11/2021 21:20

I'd say that could do with looking at, hope you're ok.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 22/11/2021 21:20

I wouldn’t bother.

lollipopsandrainbows · 22/11/2021 21:20

I once said "it can't be broken, I can wriggle my toes". A rather unimpressed nurse said "that's cos you move them with your muscles" Hmm. She promptly put me in a cast, broken metatarsal and looked exactly like yours.

Justaflippertyjibbet · 22/11/2021 21:35

You need an X-ray. I hobbled about with a foot like yours after GP said nothing was broken. 4 months on I went to minor injuries unit and X-ray revealed a break in the navicular bone. It didn’t heal despite being in an air cast and a year later I needed surgery for a talonavicular fusion. Better to go now than ignore it.

gogohm · 22/11/2021 21:36

Minor injuries is a better option

Helpstopthepain · 22/11/2021 21:39

Does your local MIU have an X-ray? If so go there. You definitely need to get it xrayed

Whistleforthechoir · 22/11/2021 21:39

Definitely worthatrip to A&E. It looks very much like a possible fractured base of 5th metatarsal (radiographer here). You're certainly not wasting anyone's time. Even if its not broken you'll need crutches/boot for it.

Jibberjabberhutt · 22/11/2021 21:42

Go and get x-rated. Or go to minor injuries. But you’ll probably need it checked. My sister turned her ankle over playing netball and it was fine apart from a bit of pain, or so she thought. She’d broken small bones in the ankle/foot and because she could walk on it a bit, she did quite a lot of damage and needed an op a few weeks down the line. She’s a doctor, by the way! 🙄

Now, that’s extreme. But if it hurts, get it checked. That’s what they’re there for.

CatsRedPot · 22/11/2021 21:42

Ouch! If you go to minor injuries makes sure they have an x-ray machine - DH broke his foot and it looked very like yours but minor injuries sent him off on his way because he could wiggle his toes and they couldn’t x-ray it Hmm

Jibberjabberhutt · 22/11/2021 21:42

X-rayed 😬

Hesma · 22/11/2021 21:46

Do you have a minor injuries clinic locally that you could go to instead of A&E?

SeaToSki · 22/11/2021 21:49

Elevate, ice, 600 mg ibuprofen 6 hrly and an xray

If the metatarsals are broken you need a support with a solid base as if you set on something with half your foot you will dislodge the two ends of the bone. If its a spiral fracture you will need a cast. If its torn ligaments you might need to be non weight bearing for four weeks. If its just badly bruised you can sigh in relief and then realize its going to be a pita for eight weeks

PumpkinPie2016 · 22/11/2021 21:50

I would say it needs an X-ray and checking over by a nurse or doctor.

Lots of people saying minor injuries - fine if you have one but many areas don't. In my area it's A&E or out of hours GP (which has to be booked through 111 or 7 day access). We don't even have a walk in centre now!

So, if no minor injuries unit with x-ray machine then I would go to A&E. You had an accident resulting in some sort of injury so you're not wasting their time.

OneOfTheGrundys · 22/11/2021 21:52

Minor injuries with an X-ray machine. If you have one locally.
