To think I would be wasting A&Es time?

I stupidly stacked it down the stairs yesterday, I stepped off sideways thinking I was on the bottom and I wasn’t and landed on the top of my foot… this is the result.
It’s sore and stiff.. I wriggle my toes and I can walk (with difficulty) but I’m not sure if that’s because I don’t have a choice running round after my 10 month old and running the house!
Would you go and get this X Rayed? I’m in 2 minds about it, I can walk so it can’t be broken? So I’d be wasting their time surely? The pain radiates from that big bruise in the middle.

@Twizbe

Have a look if there is a minor injuries unit near you.

Ours can x ray limbs and the wait isn't usually as long as A&E

^ I agree. Much better than sitting in A&E for 5 hours but probably not open until the morning now. Or wait until morning &speak to GP. They can do an X-ray request so you can book an appointment & saves the hours long wait in A&E.

Yeah I walked on a sore ankle and foot for just under a week and drove myself to a&e
A&E "go to x ray but there's no bruising, swelling, you haven't had a trauma and you're walking"
I can tell you they had a WTF face when the x ray came back with multiple breaks in my foot and ankle, I was in plaster and none weight bearing for 12 weeks Blush
GO

Yup, but call 111 and they will make an appointment for you at A&E or wherever else locally can do X-rays and handle minor injuries. Or have a go at 111 Online. 111.nhs.uk/?gclid=CjwKCAiAnO2MBhApEiwA8q0HYTj4sxBjJvmKb-pGjOa7O6Zve2-zxRdG3Le1CXx2k9_nnT52yqxS8RoCBDoQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

If its not broken don’t underestimate the soft tissue damage - my physio mate says this can be more difficult to heal than a fracture.

My foot was black from toe to ankle after a fall but I could walk so surmised it wasn't broken. Eventually went to A&E after 8 days to be told off. It was a broken metatarsal and I had a boot for 6 weeks.
Minor injuries units are only in cities as far as I know.

Ring the NHS helpline. I did something similar last January and went for an x-ray about two weeks after. It was still massively swollen and painful.
They rushed me in after forgetting about me, quickly took an x-ray and then sent me out. I'm not convinced that they took the x-ray properly but maybe that's how they do things when they're trying to stop you having to wait another hour. I had been in the x-ray waiting room for about three hours. My fault perhaps for not limping back to the desk to ask why dozens of people went in before me

It was not broken but foot still not right. I arnica gelled the bruises.

Could walk on it but was told that you can walk on a broken ankle.

Mymymycorona · 22/11/2021 22:21

That needs an xray yes so wherever your nearest xray machine is whether MIU or ED. Wait until the morning though. A hobbling otherwise well foot injury will be the very bottom of the triage priorities over night in an ED. Even if it is broken it does not need seen overnight. I don't see a wound so I am assuming it's closed. There is no way we would have capacity on nightshift to see minor injuries anymore and I imagine most hospitals are currently in a similar position.

Ice, elevate and take paracetamol based painkillers overnight .
Definitely get an assessment but the morning will be fine. You are certainly not a waste of time in an Emergency Department but overnight would probably be a waste of your time.

I had a broken foot that I could walk on (with difficulty). I walked home from work on a broken foot - a 20-minute walk took me more than twice as long, but I also believed that if you can walk on it, it can't be broken so I powered on. X-ray confirmed 5th metatarsal fracture and only at that point was I told that I definitely should not be walking on it. Definitely go to A&E or minor injuries if they can x-ray.
