To really hate celebrities?

Or perhaps just celebrity culture.

Watching Adele last night and seeing the faces in the crowd made me recoil.

Don’t get me wrong. Adele was great. It was just seeing all the overpaid, often pretentious and mainly hypocritical celebs bolstering one another’s egos in their little clique made me think I’d not care if I ever saw (most) of them again.

So, am I? Am I being unreasonable for taking a collective dislike to these people and their ways?

This is why I have a problem with CIN, Comic Relief celebrity fundraising.

They want our money - their time is precious enough to give on it's own.
And yes I realise it's not all of them, but I bet the celebs who actually give money at the sharp end don't publicise it the same way as the ones who appear on my tele telling me I need to pay.

TheVanguardSix · 25/11/2021 09:11

I had hoped the tide had turned during lockdown when celebrities started to appear irrelevant but we seem to be back worshipping them again.

Yes! God! I had so hoped for the same outcome. But noooo... back to square one. It's thirsty work being a thirsty sleb!

SummerOfComedy · 25/11/2021 09:17

@PAFMO

Peter Ustinov's was probably the best.

No no no!

Billy Connolly was the best!

All these years later, it still makes me laugh!

😀

What was it?
LittleDandelionClock · 25/11/2021 09:28

@malificent7

I felt the same about an audience with Adele...all very talented people( love Idris!) But ffs producers...read the room. It would have been better to have keyworkers there....it was a bit self congratulatory tbh. I do love Adele though...i went to her concert amd was a blubbering mess...so emotional and poignant...and beautiful!
Oh PLEASE, no more concessions for KEY WORKERS! Confused How many more freebies do they need? Maybe some other ordinary hardworking people who are on the bones of their arse (and have struggled to get enough hours of work to enable them to keep a roof over their head this past 2 years,) can get a few freebies for a change?! Hmm

@MynameisWa I do get you, and some of these celebs do get loads of privileges and freebies, but I don't resent them because I am happy with my life. They are a bit irksome though, because of all the luvvy bullshit, and the oscars are the same 'suck up, suck suck up, suck up!' And don't even get me started on the fucking BRITS going gender neutral on the bastard best singer awards Hmm

I do like Adele, but I feel like she is turning into a luvvy. Jane McDonald went the same way. Ordinary working class northerner, who now thinks she is middle class coz she has a bit of money. John Bishop is the same, and actually said at an interview not long ago 'I grew up working class with nuthin' in me pocket, but now I am middle class I can afford to splash me cash.'

Jane AND John are still working class through and through. Why pretend otherwise? I like Adele, but the second she says she is middle class now, I will burn my Adele albums!

malificent7 · 25/11/2021 09:30

Most key workers are ordinary people on the bones of their arses...shop assistants, care workers, bin men etc.

LittleDandelionClock · 25/11/2021 09:54

@malificent7

Not as much as people who are NOT key workers. What an ignorant remark. Many people who are not 'key workers' have lost their jobs over this past 2 years, or have barely managed to get 8-10 hours a week work. 'Key workers' have been paid in full, and had shit loads of hours.

As I said, what a bloody ignorant and ill informed remark from you! 'Key workers' are fucking minted compared to many other ordinary workers, and I am royally fucked off now with all the concessions and special treatment they keep getting. No more!!! Hmm Time to look after other (much poorer,) people now! The key worker worship is just nauseating now.

Elphame · 25/11/2021 09:58

It’s your choice to buy into the celeb culture though. I chose not to many years ago and have no idea who the vast majority are. Same with those laughable ‘influencers’.

I have no idea what Adele sounds like, I’ve never heard her sing as far as I know

LagneyandCasey · 25/11/2021 10:03

The Queen Madonna, with more charisma in her little toenail than Adele, can do no wrong

Except maybe turn up at An Audience with Adele 🤢

She does have a great voice.

So has this woman.

I agree with this esp the influencer part

They really do exist in that way because of people following them.

malificent7 · 25/11/2021 10:09

So much anger and bitterness...never met a minted care worker tbh...i should know...ive been working as one but have to move on as so badly paid.
Never met a minted shop assistant either.
Btw.. the care sector are desperate for recruits right now...many have been forced out as they don't want compulsory vaccinations and many cannot afford to pay the bills on a carers wage ...many cannot hack it.

WhatCanIDoNext · 25/11/2021 10:10

I saw the trailer for it - I gave it a miss.
I really can't think of any 'celeb/star' that I could be bothered to cross the street to meet.

awaynboilyurheid · 25/11/2021 10:13

@emmaliz

Its like the capitol on the hunger games, only half joking
Yup nail on head! hate all the sycophantic celebrity love I’m not really that keen on any of them, honestly most are at best simply average with good pr
CaMePlaitPas · 25/11/2021 10:14

Reminded me of that scene in Hunger Games where the people in the capital have parties and bask in their own self congratulation while the poor fight to the death and tear each other apart. It's supposed to be science fiction, but the terrifying thing is that it is already happening. I wouldn't even be surprised if something like Squid Game existed. Sick culture.

CaMePlaitPas · 25/11/2021 10:14

Oh wow! I hadn't even read the thread and someone's already compared it to the Hunger Games. Great minds! Grin

crispsarny · 25/11/2021 10:15

Completely agree with you op, I came on here after & saw a thread full of people fawning over Adele & all the celebs, I find this celebrity worshipping very disturbing, it’s like a cult. Seeing all those narcissists partying on the TV while the worlds burning was disturbing, the cost of Adeles tickets are a fortune & then you have all these lot who are already extremely privileged getting a freebie, the optics of it all were very wrong, I don’t think any of them did themselves any favours.

Fozzleyplum · 25/11/2021 10:15

The problem is that so many people nowadays are such sheep - thinking whatever they are told to think. That's why celebs are so venerated, and why so many show uncritical, knee-jerk compliance with the idea that we must all worship and bestow votive offerings on key workers. Puts me in mind of George Orwell's portrayal of the proles in "1984".

phoenixrosehere · 25/11/2021 10:23

What have they actually done to hurt you? No-one forced you to watch the programme.

Or even pay attention to “celebs” period. Can’t understand how people can be so annoyed and irritated by people who have zero effect on their lives. It also boggles my mind how people can forget that many of these celebs weren’t born into celebrity families and were “regular people” for years before they got their big breaks, some coming from impoverish families, but of course once you hit a certain income level, it all seemingly doesn’t matter because they have money now and don’t know what it’s like.

DrSbaitso · 25/11/2021 10:28

A lot of superiority on this thread. Where would it come from if there were no celebrities?

Mum0509 · 25/11/2021 10:29

I hate that you see the same ones, over and over again who don't seem particularly talented. Looking at some of the comments on news articles many if these people are not at all popular with the public, yet given vast amounts of airtime.

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 25/11/2021 10:34

@DrManhattan

Some of their behaviour is well cringe. I suppose that's what happens when you spend all your time with people kissing your arse.
I (sort of) sympathise. Whilst it's really hard for me to imagine people kissing my arse all day instead of kicking me in it - I can't help thinking there's chance I'd be (even more) of a huge arsehole if I was a celebrity.

I tend to agree and would add the fact that we are totally swamped by US "culture" - the good and the bad. I find it tragic that so many people seem to want to ape the USA in so many things.
hamstersarse · 25/11/2021 10:36

I watched about 15 mins of the Adele thing

I didn't really get it - I couldn't understand what I was supposed to be feeling about it all. All I know is it felt very 'off'.

Was I supposed to join in with the over-enthusiasm like the celeb audience? Proclaim her a genius queen of music and harp on about how i 'get it'? Examine her weight loss? Critique her dress? Maybe just be able to say I'd watched it?

It sort of felt like it should just be one of those shows that you have on in the background, humming along to the tunes while you are pottering around, but it wanted more from me. I wasn't prepared to give more and switched it off.

TooBigForMyBoots · 25/11/2021 10:43

I loved Peter Ustinov's and Billy Connelly's An Audience With. Bob Monkhouse smashed the format too.Grin
