To be frightened of war

Ciaram55 · 22/11/2021 14:56

I am so scared after reading news reports of war between US and Russia, possibly because of Ukraine and the build up of tensions in that area,. After all the worry of covid now this. Am I right to be so frightened. I don't watch the news because of these kind of fears but I stumbled across a Daily Express article which has alarmed me.

In the last few months alone The Daily Express has predicted war with Russia, China, Iran and the EU. They also start predicting the "big freeze" in July every year without fail it seems.

There are lots of volatile situations around the globe at the moment so I'm not dismissing your worries, just pointing out that many of the DE's headlines are sensationalist click bait.

Even if there was a war there is little you or I could do about it.

Ciaram55 · 22/11/2021 15:21

Any reassure me?

No of course not. No one knows the future. Sorry to be blunt but its true

FOJN · 22/11/2021 15:24

OP newspapers generate revenue by getting you to click on their sites, don't lose sleep over their money making strategy.

grapewine · 22/11/2021 15:26

No one knows, and we couldn't do anything if we did know. Stop reading rags like the Daily Express.

PicsInRed · 22/11/2021 15:27

Ukraine aren't in NATO, so we won't end up at war. We'll probably start preparing for any further incursions into NATO territory though.

Poor Ukrainians, they must be extremely concerned.

BobbieT1999 · 22/11/2021 15:28

We sail so close to war so many times and it never tips over into a conflict, so don't get yourself worked up about this.

No western country has the appetite for war and the UK is hardly equipped to engage. Russia (& China) are simply taking advantage of that atm.

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 22/11/2021 15:41

YANBU to be frightened of war - that's a very reasonable fear.
YABVU to worry about some trumped up overhyped story in a shitrag.

notimagain · 22/11/2021 15:49

We’ve been much much closer to a war that would directly effect the population of the UK on quite a few occasions in the past, but as BobbieT1999 says it never tipped over into conflict.

There are obviously some ugly goings on in parts of Eastern Europe and regions that were formerly in the USSR but there’s nothing there that justifies the scare stories being pushed out by some in the MSM.

TrickorTreacle · 22/11/2021 15:52

The threat of a US-Russia war was a lot more real back in the mid 1980s. Remember those "how to survive a nuclear war" adverts on TV?

Jibberjabberhutt · 22/11/2021 16:09

The Daily Express is obsessed with war, freeing temperatures, Alzheimer’s and Diana.

Next weeks front pages will consist of ‘War breaks out in care home after ‘Alzheimer’s-causing’ cheese sandwiches served,’ plus FREE Diana face mask.

I was a young mum in the 80s and I was always afraid of war then. However each time there's a scare I always think "this might be the one". I don't watch news but accidentally came across the scary headline on my phone. 😧. I know it's sensational headlines with the express but it's kicked off my anxiety again

Don’t forget, the cheese sandwiches will cause cancer and be made by immigrants who are taking all of “our” jobs while simultaneously claiming all of our benefits.

anniegun · 22/11/2021 16:28

The Express seems to think we are already in a war with the EU

Eastridingclub · 22/11/2021 16:30

Please don't be alarmed by anything in the Daily Express. It lives to disturb and alarm.

This is what my long suffering DH tells me. But he has to put up with me so I sometimes think he says whatever he thinks will pacify me.

Isn’t it the Express that says it’s the end of the world on a weekly basis?

StrongLegs · 22/11/2021 17:14

OP - newspapers scare the dickens out of me too. Have you tried reading the financial times? It's very soothing. When they do report on bad stuff, they quantify how bad it is in dollars, rather than using alarmist words. I never feel nearly as worried by a $10 billion problem than one that would be described as a "blaze horror" in a different newspaper.

The Guardian is the next one down from the FT in fear rating. It's generally fairly mild and free to read online. I don't go near the BBC, and definitely not the Daily Mail.

I’ve had a think. How about this:

“Cancer-causing immigrant HGV drivers flee country leaving elderly to die in big freeze with no food or fuel”, plus FREE Diana Advent Calendar.

DismantledKing · 22/11/2021 19:48

Ah, the Express. For people even too dim to read the Mail (if you can imagine such a thing). I wouldn’t wipe my arse on it, even less treat it as a new source.

Jibberjabberhutt · 22/11/2021 19:48

Sorry, I’m not poking fun at you OP, just the ludicrous headlines and wildly speculative stories in the DE.

APJ1 · 22/11/2021 20:05

Don't pay attention Daily Express! They seem to put out a 'WORLD WAR THREE' headline every week based on any minor disagreement.
