To be frightened of war

Ciaram55 · 22/11/2021 14:56

I am so scared after reading news reports of war between US and Russia, possibly because of Ukraine and the build up of tensions in that area,. After all the worry of covid now this. Am I right to be so frightened. I don't watch the news because of these kind of fears but I stumbled across a Daily Express article which has alarmed me.

It doesn’t matter does it?

No matter how we feel as individuals, no matter how we react to stories about climate change, saving the planet etc…

What will ultimately happen is just simply out of our control. The part we will play in all of this is simply to be a victim. A casualty.

It will happen. Eventually. We will all lose our lives. For me this is inevitable. And there is nothing we can do, even if we see it coming, to stop it.

Cancer-causing immigrant HGV drivers flee country leaving elderly to die in big freeze with no food or fuel”, plus FREE Diana Advent Calendar

Grin even better

You've missed your vocation.

I'll pee myself if this is the headline tomorrow Grin

It’s pretty evident that you have some major anxiety issues, this does not remotely affect you, exactly the same way you have not been affected by previous wars

“Cancer-causing immigrant HGV driver had secret affair with Diana in 1991 and now flees country leaving elderly to die in big freeze with no food or fuel”, plus FREE Diana Advent Calendar.

Just inserted another exclusive story that you might have missed....🤣

Opening poster ask yourself, "is this in my area of concern, or my area of influence?"

if it's the first, stop worrying, if there is nothing you can do, well, do nothing

If it's the second, do what you can.

I think you are in the first camp. There is little you can do. So, do nothing.

Perhaps vote in elections for those who you think will work for peace?

You decide who that is

thegcatsmother · 22/11/2021 20:53

It depends how NATO (the U.S. really) reacts if Putin does take more of Ukraine. It's breaking the 1994 Budapest Memorandum signed by Russia, the UK and the U.S. if Russia does invade further. NATO has been working with Ukraine to improve its defence capabilities, but there is a long way to go.

OP, we're living in interesting times. Okay, hairy times. Well, if you insist, really bloody worrying times.

However, we, as a species have lived through these before, and at this point, we have nothing to indicate that this is any worse than those that went before.

Control what you can. Have a disaster kit, if it makes you feel better. And limit your time doomscrolling - it doesn't change anything, and certainly doesn't help anything!

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 22/11/2021 21:53

Climate change, dwindling resources and the mass migrations that will inevitably result are likely to totally destabilise the world as we know it. The thing in Ukrane is not what you should be worried about.

MasterBeth · 22/11/2021 21:55

Don’t worry about war.

Worry about climate change.

doyouwantachuffedybadge · 22/11/2021 21:56

The UK is already at war - the Government has just conveniently called soldiers from other countries that retaliate against what the Government has done to their people, "terrorists".

doyouwantachuffedybadge · 22/11/2021 22:01

And before anyone has a hissyfit, I believe anyone who considers themselves a soldier and kills people, is a terrorist, and that murder is wrong, whatever way you try to frame it.

Ciaram55 · 22/11/2021 22:02

@MasterBeth

Don’t worry about war.

Worry about climate change.

As a born worrier I worry about that too.

This is why I don't read newspapers or watch the news. Whatever will happen won't be affected by me reading about it.
It has massively improved my peace of mind.

Miriam101 · 22/11/2021 22:15

The problem with living in ignorance as the previous poster suggests is that you are vulnerable to exactly what has happened to the OP- a blast of alarmism out of nowhere from a very unreliable source that because you know no better will have your pulse racing. OP I think if you’re Ukrainian you have reason to be worried; otherwise why not try to read around a bit as a (different) previous poster suggested. There’s a good digest by Ros Atkins on the IPlayer on this very issue. Just 10 mins.

GrumpyPanda · 22/11/2021 22:22

Saw this in the Moscow Times this morning, and its based on briefings by US officials, so not sure why everybody is harping on about the tabloids. Yes, there is definite cause for concern. And no, NATO won't go to war over Ukraine..

Lots of headlines worry me, but you can safely ignore the Express, they're bonkers.
