Another MIL moan

Notanotheroneaboutcovid · 20/11/2021 20:08

I went into labour during the night, contractions aren’t close enough to go to the hospital yet and I’ve been keeping busy and milling around.

DH and I went for a walk this afternoon and popped into my MIL shop, a customer came in (no idea who the lady is, neither does DH) and straight away MIL tells her “oh this is Jane, she’s in labour! Contractions every 8 minutes, isn’t that exciting”.

I’ve had three messages from people saying they’d heard I was in labour, one was told by MIL directly and is not someone DH would normally speak to and the other two heard through the grape vine.

Is it unreasonable to expect things like this not to be gossip?

I think if you pop into your MiL’s shop whilst in labour you’re not exactly keeping your labour a secret…

Notanotheroneaboutcovid · 20/11/2021 20:12

@PotteringAlong
…I wasn’t bent over in pain or screaming with contractions.

I'm going to assume there's a big back story with MIL but honestly, I think she's just excited about her grandchild being on the way.

If her over sharing is something you've had problems with in the past I personally wouldn't have went to her shop or told her that you were in labour.

I wouldn't personally reply to any messages until I felt I wanted to though

Santaischeckinglists · 20/11/2021 20:12

Be glad she is excited. My mil gave no fucks we had ds.
In fact she dumped us all.
Unless she demanded she be at the birth and took pics yabu!!

gettingolderandgrumpy · 20/11/2021 20:13

Err she’s excited keep it quiet if you don’t want people to know .

Thedogscollar · 20/11/2021 20:13

She's obviously excited. I'd cut her a bit of slack on this one tbh.

Dindundundundeeer · 20/11/2021 20:15

Your MIL works in a shop…. have you never listened to the archers?

practicallyimpractical38 · 20/11/2021 20:15

It's not gossip, it's lovely news. It's such an exciting time and she's obviously really happy and proud. Enjoy the well wishes from everyone and good luck

Freddiefox · 20/11/2021 20:55

Poor woman, she’s just excited. Unless you told her there and then not to say anything then I can’t see that it’s a big deal.

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 20/11/2021 21:15

The poor woman is just excited about becoming a grand parent. Why are you being so precious? If you wanted to keep it a secret why did you go to her shop?!

MusingOnStarlight · 20/11/2021 21:16

It’s her news too

tomorrowisanother · 20/11/2021 21:18

My late mother gave me some wonderful advice: if you cannot keep a secret yourself, don't expect someone else to keep it.

helterskelter3 · 20/11/2021 21:19

It’s not every day someone is stood in your shop having contractions, let alone with your grandchild. She’s just blurted it out, I think I probably would too!!

Good luck with the labour!!

FatHat · 20/11/2021 21:19

@MusingOnStarlight

It’s her news too
Hmm
Toottooot · 20/11/2021 21:20

Maybe you shouldn’t have told her if it wasn’t obvious?

5128gap · 20/11/2021 21:26

People love births. Of course they're going to gossip about it. And its not like you can keep it a secret. When you're no longer pregnant and have had a baby, I reckon people might guess you went into labour.

ikeptgoing · 20/11/2021 21:31

She's excited!! You visited her in her shop having contractions! And were stood there having contractions GrinBlimey I feel excited too...
I expect rest of us would also blurt it out !

Good luck OP Star and don't feel annoyed with MIL... btw irritability can be a sign of transition stage of labour (or of just being heavily pregnant and in pain!)

hoomama · 20/11/2021 21:54

As others have said, I think she's just excited. I wouldn't get too worked up about this one.

In my experience, MIL's piss you off way more once the baby gets here!

OinkPinkPonk · 20/11/2021 21:57

She's excited op, emotions are high don't dwell on it right now you have enough going on.
Good luck!

PinkSyCo · 20/11/2021 22:43

Oh God it sounds like you’re going to be one of ‘those’ DILs. Poor woman, I feel sorry for her.

TotallySuper · 20/11/2021 22:45

YABU

Aquamarine1029 · 20/11/2021 22:50

If you didn't want anyone to know, you shouldn't have told her. Lesson learned, eh?

sunshineandshowers40 · 20/11/2021 23:02

I'm not that keen on my mil but yabu. You went to her shop whilst in labour, she is just an excited grandma!

GiveItTillMarch · 20/11/2021 23:05

Does it matter that people know you are in labour? People get excited about babies. I assume this is your first?

Good luck with the rest of the labour, but it isn't a secret if you tell someone.

doodleygirl · 20/11/2021 23:06

I’m going to assume hormones have got the better of you and in a few days you will cringe at starting this nasty thread.

Good luck with your onward labour.
