To go on holiday on my own?

In the past 3 years DH has been on four stag holidays and lads weekends away for special occasions. Each holiday has been at least 4 days, some have been more. It would be more if it hadn't have been for Covid lockdowns and travel restrictions. He also goes out to the pub every Friday night and does sports all day every Saturday.

I have told him I'm going to go off on my own for a holiday in the new year as I feel like it's my turn to have some time to myself, and he seems to think I'm being unreasonable and wonders why I want to go on a holiday when we have a family holiday each year.

AIBU? We have two DC, ages are 12 and 17. Also, has anyone got any good suggestions for winter sunshine holidays?

I've been thinking about a day or so away. I'm knackered and stressed out by family stuff. I totally get why you'd want to and it does sound unfair that you're not getting the support to go.

Seville sounds nice. I'm all arthritic-y and fancy some warm water swimming somewhere...

I do on at least 1, usually 2, holidays by myself every year and have for as long as I can remember, at least since my eldest was about 18 months (in between small babies, of course). When my youngest was 8 months, I took him with me to Barcelona and we had a great time. I usually do city breaks in Europe or walking holidays. I went to Cornwall for 5 days over the summer. It’s great. I love my own company and the peace.

I love holidaying on my own ... much prefer it to a family holiday which just ends up as a massive compromise for everyone Grin.

Definitely do it!!

JaceLancs · 19/11/2021 21:14

I often holiday on my own or with a female friend
Canary Islands would be good in January or February

Of course YANBU. He's a dick to say otherwise. In fact, how very dare he with all his breaks with friends and Friday nights and Saturdays to himself.

Is there any particular company good for booking solo trips?

Or do people just travel independently?

EileenGC · 19/11/2021 22:13

I have never booked through a company.

Might sign up to the odd guided tour once there, if it’s somewhere remote and not good for wandering off on your own, but I want to choose travel, accommodation and food options myself.

I travelled once with Friendship Travel. Amazing holiday with like minded solo travellers. Company was awesome in how they looked after us.

Watching this with interest. I need a break. I need a passport first though 😫 mine ran out at the beginning of the pandemic. I need some inspiration.

Wombat46 · 19/11/2021 22:44

I got a new passport, it didn't take too long.

I used to be brave, no clue what's happened.

I do hope the OP makes a stand!

Hairbrush123 · 19/11/2021 22:51

Definitely not. Before I met DP, I would always go on holiday by myself (I have been once and he’s been once or twice by himself since we’ve been together) and it’s so liberating. Go for it OP.

Thank you so much for the replies! I was initially planning on just going for 4 days or so, but I think I'll go for a week. I've been looking at the canaries and Cyprus online this morning so probably going to go for one of those and then perhaps do the Maldives next winter.

I'm also irked as it's dawned on me that I spend every bloody Saturday while he's doing sports cleaning and tidying the house as he's always too tired to do much on Sundays and just sits around all day. So I'll make it clear to him that whilst I'm away he has to keep up with housework and laundry and that I don't want to come back to a tip.

I’ve been on many a walking holiday by myself. Would really recommend it!

ZenNudist · 20/11/2021 13:59

I also looked at Yas Island in Abu Dhabi in February half term. They do some great 5 day 5 star breaks.

Until Covid struck I went to Nice every December. Air BnB very reasonable. Great place and the weather was always kind, not roasting but warmer than home!

Very easy to get around on the tram system and the train connects to all sorts of lovely spots like Cannes, Menton, and even Ventimiglia in Italy for the great market day out. It is great for solos IMV. I used to go out for lunch for the prix fix menu, no bother on your own at all. I never bothered with dinner as that is a bit more formal for me, but the supermarches have great cheese, baguettes, etc. to scoff on at nightime.

Just a suggestion, as everyone has different things they want from a holiday or break away.
