Should the oven door be open when grilling?

I never know

OP posts:
TurnUpTurnip · 18/11/2021 16:28

I’ve wondered this and didn’t keep my instructions so haven’t used my grill as I heard of someone dying for closing theirs when they used the grill with the door closed I don’t know if mine is suppose to be open or closed www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/five-people-gassed-death-accidentally-23024643.amp

Fatgalslim · 18/11/2021 16:29

@toastofthetown

Why do you think you're being unreasonable? I have no idea how to use your oven. Why don't you check the instruction manual?
Don't be so bloody chippy, OP only asked a question
BatshitCrazyWoman · 18/11/2021 16:29

@Hadalifeonce

My grill doesn't work if the door is open.
Same. And it beeps at you until you shut it.
LoveGrooveDanceParty · 18/11/2021 16:31

Why does it feel ‘wrong’ to people to have the door open? Is it just because that’s what you’re used to?

Even if it is open, it’s not wide enough to really see how well things are cooking. And even if it’s open, you still have to pull the tray out to turn things over.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 18/11/2021 16:35

I had an old oven where it said you must close the door when using the grill and I realised why when I once left it open.
The control knobs (probably bakelite) were above the grill and got incredibly hot and started to give off a horrible smell.

lisaandalan · 18/11/2021 16:36

I'd say so. X

TellingBone · 18/11/2021 16:36

Mine works both ways, but I've always thought that with the door open you're grilling; with the door closed you're baking. It does make a difference - bacon for instance would only crisp properly with grilling.

TerribleZebra · 18/11/2021 16:37

Depends on the oven. My current one shut. Previous one open. You need the manual.

ViceLikeBlip · 18/11/2021 16:38

Gas needs to be open to let in enough oxygen, otherwise there's a risk it will produce carbon monoxide (rather than carbon dioxide)

But I don't fully understand why this applies to the grill, but not the oven itself 🤷‍♀️

misskatamari · 18/11/2021 16:39

depends on the oven, mine tells you to shut the door if its open when grilling

Yes, weird. It’s a lot easier to have an electric oven.
OnTheBenchOfDoom · 18/11/2021 16:50

Mine is another one that turns itself off if you leave the door open for slightly longer than it takes to remove a grill pan. It beeps at you and displays "close the door". If you don't close the door it turns off.

knittingaddict · 18/11/2021 16:53

The instructions for our oven tell you to close the door when the grill function is in use. I think there is a risk of the heat damaging the outside of the oven if you don't close the door. I rarely grill so it's not really an issue for me.

JunoMcDuff · 18/11/2021 16:53

Depends on the oven.

I've had one where it had to be closed. Not sure why.

knittingaddict · 18/11/2021 16:55

The oven is electric.

TangledNemo · 18/11/2021 16:58

My grill smells like burning when the door is closed. I usually leave the door open but sometimes I forget because it’s a combi grill/oven and I use the oven more.

Tal45 · 18/11/2021 16:58

I thought it was supposed to be open, but mine works shut so maybe I'm supposed to close. No idea where the manual is.

Warblerinwinter · 18/11/2021 17:01

Depends on oven entirely.
Read the manual.
I have moved recently. My old oven had a grill oven, door must be left open or overheats and cuts out. New house and oven must be shut and set to 230 or doesn’t heat up effectively - took me a while to figure that out 🤣🤣 why as my cheese on toast taking 15 mins to grill🤔

Warblerinwinter · 18/11/2021 17:02

And both were electric btw

BSideBaby · 18/11/2021 17:03

Mine is definitely grill with the door open.

The reason I know this is I forgot one day and closed the door, and the glass shattered all over the kitchen (thankfully toddler DD was in a different room).

CounsellorTroi · 18/11/2021 17:04

Mine needs door shut,. Pain in the arse actually.

diddl · 18/11/2021 17:05

@ShellieEllie

Depends on the oven, mine I have to close. I'm sure you'll find the info in the manual.
That in a nutshell!
PigletJohn · 18/11/2021 17:06

nobody can answer this question

because it depends on your particular oven.

it does not depend on opinion or whim.

Badabingbadabum · 18/11/2021 17:06

Gas, open. Electricdepends on the oven.

erinaceus · 18/11/2021 17:12

@TwoLeftSocksWithHoles In a previous house, the oven came with a strip of metal maybe 30cm wide and as long as the width of the oven, bent into a shallow V shape along its length. It slotted in between the top of the oven and the knobs when grilling to stop the knobs heating up -- then you grilled with the door open.

Since then I've always grilled with the oven door open, I guess it's what I am used to. Perhaps I ought to check the manual for current oven...
