Worked at a new school today and made myself decidedly unpopular for not loving their school dogs. I'm seriously allergic to dogs, yet it still seems to offend people if I don't want to touch them. I find cockapoos to be REALLY needy and annoying, and I just don't want a dog scrabbling at my legs when I'm in work. I'm allergic enough to need to be WARNED beforehand if there is a dog there. AIBU?

So you tell people you're severely allergic and they're offended that you don't want to stroke the dog. Really?

Brusca · 16/11/2021 20:50

You're 'seriously allergic' yet worked all day in a school with a resident dog?

Did they take you more seriously when you showed them your epipens?

Mamamia7962 · 16/11/2021 20:54

How many dogs does the school have?

DroopyClematis · 16/11/2021 20:54

What did your line manager say when you told them that you are 'seriously allergic' to dogs?

Meowwwwwww · 16/11/2021 20:55

I’ve always been told poodle crosses are non-allergenic but I have no idea if it’s true. If it’s not true I don’t know why they are so popular!

EmeraldShamrock · 16/11/2021 20:56

No, but it does look like they're 2 for a fiver there is so many of them and other versions of the poodle who look similar.
They seem like a calm breed.
My Dsis one is a lovely dog she's needy and anxious.

YeOldeTrout · 16/11/2021 20:58

Would an ugly mongrel be fine to scrabble around one's legs?

WaitinginVain · 16/11/2021 21:06

I have no idea how serious your allergies are and if you don't like dogs you don't but Cockapoos are generally lovely dogs and to describe them as REALLY needy and annoying is most definitely unreasonable.

Hallowbat · 16/11/2021 21:07

I’ve got a cockapoo and completely agree they’re needy and annoying!

XenoBitch · 16/11/2021 21:09

YANBU, but then I hate this current trend of breeding mongrels and charging serious £K for them.

DrManhattan · 16/11/2021 21:16

Do you mean school mums bringing them on pick up? There are loads at my kids school. Seem to be a (fading) trend

Chunkymenrock · 16/11/2021 21:17

I find dogs very annoying at work. (I love them otherwise.) Cockapoo is a very annoying spelling. They are Cockerpoos, as they are a Cocker spaniel cross.

sparklins · 16/11/2021 21:19

Do you mean people bringing the dogs to school pick ups/drop offs? If so YABU. I'm sure no one is chasing you down the yard sticking their (tiny) dog in your face and walking off in a huff when you refuse to pet it.

EmeraldShamrock · 16/11/2021 21:21

I never heard of school dogs before last week.
It's crazy having a dog ft in a school.

CovidCorvid · 16/11/2021 21:22

Wow, never heard of a school having multiple dogs? Do they just roam round the classrooms? Or is it one dog per classroom?

Peace43 · 16/11/2021 21:23

My Bichon is a non-shedding hypoallergenic dog. My boyfriend is still allergic to him! It’s less bad than with a shedding dog. He is also a cantankerous, anxiety ridden stubborn little stinky twat. I do live him though (I just wouldn’t expect anyone else to!)

BobLemon · 16/11/2021 21:24

That, @YeOldeTrout, is a pedigree Cockaseal and I refuse to hear them denigrated in such a way!

TrickorTreacle · 16/11/2021 21:26

That's what I was thinking too - parents bringing their dogs on school runs.

I would never expect dogs IN the school. However, if dogs are a feature inside of the school or on school grounds, then there are 2 issues here: This should have been made known to the OP when she was applying for the school job, and secondly, reasonable adjustments should have been made on health grounds if she has an allergy.

As for the OP being unpopular, if the dogs are 1-2 years old, I can imagine some of the resentfulness is the fact that the parents have paid £3000+ for each lockdown puppy and now they can't re-home them.

RobinPenguins · 16/11/2021 21:26

I’m not really down with dogs in the workplace tbh, whether that’s a school or elsewhere. My MIL has a cockapoo and it’s the most annoying dog I’ve ever encountered.

FrankButchersDickieBow · 16/11/2021 21:31

We have a cockapoo and my husband who is very allergic to dogs, is not allergic to our cockapoo.

I think because cockapoos are basically mongrels, they all have completely different personalities. Maybe you have only met the needy ones.

Our dog is akin to our child, in that love her, but I'm not really arsed about other people's.

Elephantsparade · 16/11/2021 21:31

Anyone else unsure if @Peace43 boyfriend or dog that is cantankerous and stinky?

WhatTheFlap · 16/11/2021 21:34

Every cockerpoo I’ve met is annoying and absolutely not calm 😂 Odd choice for a school dog!

Dentistlakes · 16/11/2021 21:35

Dogs don’t belong in schools, whether they are there permanently or brought on the school run. Our primary banned dogs on the premises. Children who were nervous of dogs still had to run the gauntlet of the bloody things tied up outside the gates though. Luckily my DC weren’t afraid but there were some who were really worried by it. Thankfully our lovely headmaster put a stop to it and the gates were dog free, even if he had to stand out there each and every day to make sure.

MyDogTails · 16/11/2021 21:36

My kids' school has a "school dog" (basically a member of staff's dog) and my child has a reaction every time it is nearby. Yet kids still walk this dog unsupervised meaning my child can't escape.

It's massively selfish, all because a member of staff can't afford doggie day care.

MissyB1 · 16/11/2021 21:37

“Severely allergic” and yet presumably you didn’t end up in hospital? Did you have to use an epipen? Or are you actually perfectly ok?
