Worked at a new school today and made myself decidedly unpopular for not loving their school dogs. I'm seriously allergic to dogs, yet it still seems to offend people if I don't want to touch them. I find cockapoos to be REALLY needy and annoying, and I just don't want a dog scrabbling at my legs when I'm in work. I'm allergic enough to need to be WARNED beforehand if there is a dog there. AIBU?

My Bichon is a non-shedding hypoallergenic dog. My boyfriend is still allergic to him! It’s less bad than with a shedding dog. He is also a cantankerous, anxiety ridden stubborn little stinky twat. I do live him though (I just wouldn’t expect anyone else to!)

The dog or the boyfriend?Grin

A school dog you say?! Is this a thing?! How do I get one at my DCs school??!

XelaM · 16/11/2021 21:41

Poodle fur is non-allergenic

verymiddleaged · 16/11/2021 21:41

@YeOldeTrout I actually think that is a xoloitzcuintli, or Mexican hairless dog.
The same breed in the Disney film coco a few years ago.
Being hairless they might actually be good for OP.
Frida Carlo also kept them.
They were traditionally a guide to the underworld.

A better looking version.

Also yes I have a non shedding "hypoallergenic" cavachon and yup still allergic! Worth every sneeze though. The day I got him was pretty much the happiest day of my life (don't tell my DC 😂)

Howshouldibehave · 16/11/2021 21:43

You have a serious allergy to dogs and there was one there you were unaware of? What happened-how badly did you react? I presume you have got an epipen?

godmum56 · 16/11/2021 21:44

@Meowwwwwww

I’ve always been told poodle crosses are non-allergenic but I have no idea if it’s true. If it’s not true I don’t know why they are so popular!
not true.

I totally get you! I have two cavapoochons and they are the most amazing dogs. So full of personality, like furry little humans but cuter
FrankButchersDickieBow · 16/11/2021 21:48

@WhatTheFlap

Every cockerpoo I’ve met is annoying and absolutely not calm 😂 Odd choice for a school dog!
Ours is seriously chill. We must be lucky. Non allergenic, non crazy.
GinGinItsAWonderfulThing · 16/11/2021 22:06

Dogs (in my experience) are like humans… you raise them a certain way.

Yes some breeds have certain traits, but you a) should pick one to suit you life b) work hard to train them. Some kids are shits and spoilt, some dogs are too, you just need to put in the work 🤷🏼

GinGinItsAWonderfulThing · 16/11/2021 22:07

Also - only idiots think a poodle crossed with a shedding dog will be totally hypoallergenic.

GinGinItsAWonderfulThing · 16/11/2021 22:10

Also also (p.s p.p.s kinda thing) most school dogs I have met are Labrador’s.

I have a cockapoo, she is utterly chilled and sleeps under my desk all days (7months old) but I think labs are considered more people/child friendly dogs.

MajesticWhine · 16/11/2021 22:12

I don't think it's unreasonable at all OP. It sounds annoying to have dogs in the workplace.
My cockerpoo is quite a bit less annoying than our other dog. I doubt it's a cockerpoo specific issue.
And yes sadly they do still cause an allergic reaction, as my eldest DD is allergic to ours. But not a serious allergy thankfully.

danadas · 16/11/2021 22:13

My sons school had a school dog in his secondary. It was a great deal for the teacher tbh. They fundraised to buy it, it follows her around the school and obviously goes home with her at night and the yearly fundraising is for the upkeep. Basically she has got herself a free dog 😂

Oh my! I never heard of a cavapoochon and google is giving me all the joy right now 😍

Tibby99 · 16/11/2021 22:32

I'm allergic to dogs, not seriously so but definitely so Grin

Cockpoos trigger my allergy every time, just not as much as typical shedding dogs. They're still half cocker and as they're officially mongrels and their bloodlines not monitored there's actually no way of knowing if the cockerpoo you get is enough poodle to be hypoallergenic.

Pure breed hypoallergenic dogs haven't triggered my allergy.

Ylvamoon · 16/11/2021 22:39

I think if OP is severely allegic to dogs, she needs to tell her employer so that they can make reasonable adjustments.

I only know about a failed school dog, that belongs to a family member. Basically the poor thing was dragged into school as tiny puppy and couldn't cope with all the kids noice & running around. Now it's just stuck at home, hardly walked, and doesn't like being touched ... which means if anyone visits their house, the dog is locked outside in the garden.

AmandaHoldensLips · 16/11/2021 22:54

I live next door to a cockapoo and it's thick as bricks and has terrible separation anxiety.

VestaTilley · 16/11/2021 22:57

A school dog?! What fresh hell is this?

fuckyourpronouns · 16/11/2021 23:01

People saying cockerpoos are hypoallergenic are misleading.

I am allergic to dogs. I am less allergic to my mils cockerpoo than I am to my friends Labrador. However in reality all this means is I can spend slightly more time in my mils house without wheezing and needing to up my antihistamines than I can at my friends. My eyes still itch and I still get short of breath

Based on all of the cockerpoos I have come across they are needy and annoying. However their owners also treat them like babies so likely part of the problem

Trixiefirecracker · 16/11/2021 23:08

@Peace43 dog or boyfriend? 😂

shinynewapple21 · 16/11/2021 23:09

I'm a bit confused here . So you have a role that means you work in different schools ? Knowing 'school dogs' are a thing , do you check before going into a school if you are that allergic ? The school presumably has the dogs for the benefit of particular pupils so the school may struggle to do anything different with the dogs because you are there. What kind of role do you have ?

PieMistee · 16/11/2021 23:13

I hate people use allergic to mean intolerant. It's belittles real allergies.

PieMistee · 16/11/2021 23:13

who use

elbea · 16/11/2021 23:32

I think people have misconceptions about what causes allergy to animals. It’s wonderful that all your dogs don’t shed hair but people are allergic to dander predominately - their dead skin, as well as salvia and sweat. There isn’t any such thing as a hypoallergenic dog.

That being said, I have previously worked in an office that had eight dogs every day with five people working there. I’d anticipate that people who applied for jobs there on seeing all of the dogs would decide it wouldn’t be for them.
