To be absolutely fuming with my tiler

BridgetGetTheGin · 16/11/2021 15:00

He was meant to be here on Sunday. Never turned up, said he would be here at 8am on Monday.

8am, he has childcare problems. Turns up at 2pm and works for 2 hours.

Today, he never turned up and now saying he's coming tonight at 8pm! Again, his wife is out at a birthday and has childcare problems.

Ahhhhhhh... surely this is not my problem. 😣😣😣😣😣

What are the childcare problems? If he's waiting for a PCR test I can understand tbh. Though 8pm is a stupid time to be tiling.

BridgetGetTheGin · 16/11/2021 15:01

Sorry 6pm* tonight...

Who turns up for work in someone's kitchen at 6pm!!!!!

I'd be annoyed, but where we are good tradesmen are fully booked so squeezing jobs in left right and centre so I'd let him get on with it. It'll be worth it in the end.

PingedPotato · 16/11/2021 15:20

Can you find another tiler?

He's definitely working another job and squeezing us in

Trades calling the shots right now.

It's not right but there are many many other jobs lining up for them.

Flowerlane · 16/11/2021 15:23

Guarantee he has another job and will fit you in around that.

We just had 6 months of this with a loft conversion. Most weeks no more than 2 days work on site from our contractors. Variations on 'just got to pick the baby up from nursery 'van broken down' 'sick' ' house flooded' 'electrical fault at home' 'unexpected delivery' 'materials haven' t turned up' 'tools stolen from van' and repeat over and over...
My husband has been self employed for nearly 20 years and has built his reputation and client list by being completely, 100% reliable come hell or high water. We thought we would treat ourselves to someone else doing the work in our old age - never again!!!!

Wilkolampshade · 16/11/2021 15:27

I should add we realised early on they were running multiple other jobs, too many to handle adequately, but it was the constant lying about it that got us - well, me, down.

Oh god, how did you deal with it? It's really stressing me out.

I'm also due a baby this week Confused

Changethetoner · 16/11/2021 15:32

If you're due a baby this week - it might explain why he is being so helpful in trying to offer you appointments in the evening - he wants to get your job done in time! Maybe.

Rrrob · 16/11/2021 15:34

Tell me you’re not in SE London/ Kent border. Sounds remarkably like the moronic tiler that messed us around for 5 days a few months back. Van broke down, job overran, needed to do the school run, was going to a funeral, next day was too hungover. A new excuse every day yet he seemed flummoxed when I told him to get stuffed after that.

Wooky8 · 16/11/2021 15:40

Sounds like the last tiler I had. Excuses all over the place until I telephoned and said frankly that we had chosen him specifically because he said he'd have the job done within a week and three weeks later, he still hasn't been round. Thankfully, he seemed rather sheepish and was round the next day. You might be getting bumped to the bottom of the job list, especially if it's a small job.

BridgetGetTheGin · 16/11/2021 15:42

He said it would be done in a day / 2 days max! Can't see it being completed in time if he's only coming 2 hours a day or not turning up!

I wanted to get my hall done in wood effect porcelain. Not a chance of getting a tiler before christmas.

I've got one wall done though, an empty kitchen and so he has started...

My garden fence took from September 2020 to October 2021 to be constructed because the bloke fitted me in between big jobs and also had to do a bit of other work as he went along. I thought it would take him 4 months maximum. In the end I nearly buried him in the garden.

As for my kitchen tiling. It took two years to find someone who actually bothered to turn up. Just let him do it.

It's a massive pain in the arse.

Irishfarmer · 16/11/2021 16:05

Really frustrating, I can imagine. My SIL is building a house right now and finding it so hard to get tradesmen in. Sounds like I need to re-train!

HarrisonStickle · 16/11/2021 16:07

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Only if she wants it to take even longer!

Franklin12 · 16/11/2021 16:07

How difficult is it for these trades to say sorry. I dont have a slot for xx weeks. Are we trying to persuade them, giving them a sob story etc or is it that they are useless at managing their own time?

In our last house it was exactly like this with stupid excuses. NO ONE BELIEVES YOU!

I would rather they were open and honest. One day it will be the other way round.....

Candleabra · 16/11/2021 16:09

Agree with this. Annoying. Who wants someone working on their house when they’ve already done a full days work. You’re hardly getting a quality service.
