Been going to my gym for a while now. Changing rooms are a mixed bag of women coyly retreating to cubicles, coyly wriggling under a towel in the open plan bit, semi-boldly stripping off to change but doing it very quickly and the odd octogenarian who obviously no longer gives any kind of a fuck and just gets undressed and dressed in her own good time.

All of these are fine and dandy and I do my best to give them privacy by keeping my eyes focused on my own stuff. This week though there was a woman who made me double take and then not know where to look.

Ignoring the fact that she left all her stuff laid out over an entire bench for the duration of her residency in the gym (ie - it was there when I got there. There when I went to change for the sauna and showers and there when I came out of the showers, so a good 90 minutes) she sauntered out of the shower with her towel wrapped round her head and flip flops on. Nowt else. Dries herself off thoroughly whilst admiring herself in the mirror. So far, so bold, fair play to her, though I wish she'd been a little more considerate of space.

This is the bit that flabbergasted me though and I genuinely want to know if I'm being unreasonable to have wished she'd kept it to home....

Still stark bollock naked she wanders over to the full length mirror in the centre of the changing rooms, which is in a central thoroughfare bit, so everyone has to go past relatively closely to move from one bit of the changing rooms to any other, holding a mitt and a bottle and proceeds to spend nearly 20 minutes applying fake tan to her naked self. I think the worst bit was glancing up as she bent over in front of me to do her legs. I mean, she had a nice figure, she obviously looks after herself, but there's some views that only intimate partners and gynaecologists should be privy to in my opinion, yet I was treated to a good old look.

Aibu to expect extensive nudity and fake tanning to be done in private? Am I a horrible old prude? I had a giggle about it afterwards but I do kind of hope I'm not subjected to that again as it made me rather uncomfortable.

She could have put some knickers on!

If I was in shape I feel like I would parade around naked all the time if I’m honest! So no help from me :)

TicTacHoh · 15/11/2021 20:44

When I was thinneryounger, I was a member of a swanky London city gym. Everyone wandered round naked in the changing rooms.

teaandbiscuitspleaseplease · 15/11/2021 20:45

Fake tanning in the changing room should not be allowed, too much potential for mess.

ThatCampWitch · 15/11/2021 20:45

I’m with you!

Iveputmyselfonthenaughtystep · 15/11/2021 20:46

This gym is neither swanky nor London. I'd day roughly half the regulars are there for some kind of physical rehab. Suffice to say my middle aged, borne two children body is nothing to be too ashamed of there, despite anomalies like Miss St Tropez

Just put some bloody Knickers on! As you say, there are certain views that others just don’t need to see!

Your language about women changing is strange.

ABCeasyasdohrayme · 15/11/2021 20:51

😂 I admire her confidence.

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 15/11/2021 20:52

Waking round nude, applying body lotion in a manner to ensure it doesn’t flick on your neighbour: absolutely fine.

Applying fake tan: not absolutely fine.

TannyFickler · 15/11/2021 20:56

@MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry Ooh do share your psychoanalysis!

BatshitBanshee · 15/11/2021 20:57

YANBU. But if she glanced up as she bent over in front of you, she wants an audience. I can't imagine anyone bending over to parade their undercarriage to strangers wants anything but an audience.

Just trying to paint a picture. I was in a wordy mood this evening. I'm somewhere between bold- but-speedy and a towel wriggler myself.

I was treated to the sight of a beautiful, naked woman lovingly applying body lotion to every inch of herself in a changing room once. It's a bit weird- it feels really sexualised and improper, probably due to media portrayal of women. It's like watching someone lasciviously eating a Cadbury's flake while tossing their long blond locks about. Feels very much done for public display.

Hahaha ha- no, she was remarkably focused actually. The whole thing was rather surreal.

I think this is on the nail. The gym I was in, 90% of people were determined not to subject the other gym members to their nudity!
then 10% were determined that the rest of us were going to see their fanny.

Wombat49 · 15/11/2021 21:02

As long as she doesn't sit on the benches with no towel or knickers, I don't care.

Seen someone do that, have tried never to sit on the benches since.

Tho I've never understood people spraying stuff or shaving in communal saunas.

Seen someone rifle through my stuff & decide my goggles could be used for their swim too.

Some weird people about...

And are you coy when you are wriggling behind your towel?

Confused

MintyGreenDream · 15/11/2021 21:04

All I can think is if you got dressed after fake tanning it would go all streaky.Sorry not the point of the thread!

Datsandcogs · 15/11/2021 21:04

Fake tan (and shaving) are specifically banned at my very non-London gym changing rooms!

FangsForTheMemory · 15/11/2021 21:06

She's an exhibitionist. I would have ostentatiously turned my back.

And are you coy when you are wriggling behind your towel?

Naturally. Surely the act of wriggling under a towel exemplifies coyness?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 15/11/2021 21:08

All ok except for the fake tan, which isn’t something to do in public

I also wasn’t sure about the “coyly” and “boldly” choice of words either

Exactly this, @MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry

I mean, 'coyly retreating', 'coyly wriggling', 'boldly stripping off'. Otherwise known as women changing, in a women's changing room.

To be honest, this sounds like the wank fantasy of a teenage boy, imagining what a women's changing room might be like.

PrincessPaws · 15/11/2021 21:11

People are weird, I was leaving the changing room a couple of months ago (I'm definitely a coy cubicle changer) and saw one woman topless with a towel on her head FaceTiming her husband/boyfriend while she was wandering around and faffing with her makeup! Ok for her but I suspect everyone else in there was verging on murderous (but too polite to say anything)
