AIBU To buy same furniture as friend?

BubblinTrouble · 13/11/2021 15:22

Been looking at dining tables for months and months. Decided to go and see one that I liked but I ended up not liking it in real life. I saw another one I thought was beautiful. Unfortunately my friend who lives in the same area as me has ordered this too. In the last 7 months she’s come over once. I don’t really invite people to my home as I dislike hosting.

I feel that if I ask friend, she will politely say it doesn’t matter but probably will be annoyed? Or am I overthinking it!! She will ask me with what dining table I ended up getting and I don’t want to lie to her either.

AIBU to buy it?
YANBU it doesn’t matter

If you like it, buy it! Why shouldn't you buy something you like? It's not like she visits everyday :)

FatCatThinCat · 13/11/2021 15:26

Why would anyone be bothered by this? I could understand if it was a customised one off piece. But there will be thousands upon thousands of people who have the same table, why can't one be someone you know?

askingforafriend80 · 13/11/2021 15:26

Is it really obvious you will have the same table? I mean is it like an oak type dining table which mainly look the same or some super individual type table?
But I’d buy it anyway

MajorCarolDanvers · 13/11/2021 15:27

I don't understand why this would bother someone.

Buy it.

DancingQueen2018 · 13/11/2021 15:28

I have the same kitchen cupboards as my best friend (but different worktops etc). We think it’s hilarious (and are both v pleased with our impeccable taste).
If you like it go for it!

TurnUpTurnip · 13/11/2021 15:33

Some people are weird about this, my sister had some wallpaper and I said I wanted to get the same one and she said I “wasn’t allowed to copy” 🙄

thepeopleversuswork · 13/11/2021 15:36

I find this absolutely bizarre, the idea that people think because they've bought something they own the intellectual property on it. It's madness.

Like these daft threads about people thinking they "own" baby names or bridesmaid's dresses.

Buy the bloody furniture if you like it. She doesn't own the rights to it.

Funnylittlefloozie · 13/11/2021 15:41

I'm buying a dining table and chairs from Oak Furniture Land. I expect THOUSANDS of people will have the same table and chairs as I do. Buy the ones you like and think no more of it.

IncognitoBurrito · 13/11/2021 15:41

It’s not like the two tables will ever be going to the same party or anything. It’s not a cocktail dress. Get the table. I wouldn’t mind if I was your friend.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 13/11/2021 15:46

Im assuming it's a pretty standard trable and not some really unique looking limited edition piece that's a real talking point. If so then I'd buy it. If you think she would be bothered then just bung a table cloth over it when she visits

nanbread · 13/11/2021 15:47

What is the table out of interest (misses point)

BubblinTrouble · 13/11/2021 16:14

Lol @nanbread here you go -

www.danetti.com/products/riley-ceramic-table-white

Not bespoke or anything but not just a normal wooden table either.

Just buy it. You saw it in a shop, not in her house

sonjadog · 13/11/2021 16:21

It's just a dining table. I don't see that there would be any problem at all.

FangsForTheMemory · 13/11/2021 16:23

I think it’s fine so long as you don’t wear it to the same event.

Jabvribt · 13/11/2021 16:26

It really wouldn’t worry me if someone did this; as long as you don’t do the same room decorations or accessories then I can’t say it’d matter

StoneofDestiny · 13/11/2021 16:28

She told you what she ordered and you are getting the same one - she's going to spot it easily enough 😂 Of all the dining tables in the world.......etc 😂

UnderCaffeinated · 13/11/2021 16:32

Just buy it - me and a close friend both painted our living rooms with navy accent walls at one stage. We joked about how it's fine because our houses will never be seen together.

It's a lovely table, I really like it myself!

BlueTouchPaper · 13/11/2021 16:32

I've got the same dining table as a friend. I liked it so she told me where she got it. My daughter got one too as she's just got a new house. It's not madly expensive but simply styled, and white, which we all seem to like. My friend cares not a jot the we've copied.

Catcrazy83 · 13/11/2021 16:34

Some lovely similar tables on wayfair if you’ve not checked yet

BubblinTrouble · 13/11/2021 16:36

@Catcrazy83 thanks for the recommendation! Will take a look Smile

EmeraldShamrock · 13/11/2021 16:37

I wouldn't.
There are lots similar tables, mine has crossed legs but completely different style.

Mammma91 · 13/11/2021 16:38

If you like it buy it!! I low key love when friends/family are inspired by something I’ve bought and buy the same. Your friend doesn’t own rights to it.

Knittedfairies · 13/11/2021 16:41

I bought a sofa and chair that my friend liked so much she bought exactly the same. It never occurred to me that I should be bothered by that! Buy the table.

NotanotherboxofFrogs · 13/11/2021 16:51

Buy the table.

My friend who lives two doors away (coincidentally in my old house) has got the exact same table and chairs as I have as she needed a table and chairs and admired mine.

Table is from Amazon and chairs are from Argos. Do I care, not at all. In fact I placed the orders for them as she doesn't shop online.
