AIBU To buy same furniture as friend?

BubblinTrouble · 13/11/2021 15:22

Been looking at dining tables for months and months. Decided to go and see one that I liked but I ended up not liking it in real life. I saw another one I thought was beautiful. Unfortunately my friend who lives in the same area as me has ordered this too. In the last 7 months she’s come over once. I don’t really invite people to my home as I dislike hosting.

I feel that if I ask friend, she will politely say it doesn’t matter but probably will be annoyed? Or am I overthinking it!! She will ask me with what dining table I ended up getting and I don’t want to lie to her either.

AIBU to buy it?
YANBU it doesn’t matter

DFS do one that’s similar but nicer imo. Go with that and buy a different chair to completely change the style

lanbro · 13/11/2021 17:01

I have the exact same standard lamp as my sister, liked hers so bought the same one. We are often at each other's houses, doesn't matter in the slightest! How weird that it should even be a consideration...

Thwackit · 13/11/2021 17:09

Get the table and put a cloth on it when she comes over. Resolved!

TractorAndHeadphones · 13/11/2021 17:10

I'd love having matching furniture with my friends!

Doomscrolling · 13/11/2021 17:11

Why would she care?

Singleorigincoffee · 13/11/2021 17:15

Buy it..who cares if she has it? If she really takes offence then she's not a friend so you can get rid.

returned my danetti table when I bought one 4 years ago..it started chipping the moment it arrived ..

KNain · 13/11/2021 17:15

If it was me I'd message and say something like:

'Hi, I'm looking for a new dining table at the moment and really like the look of this one . Is it the same as yours? What do you think of it/would you recommend it?'

ColouringPencils · 13/11/2021 17:18

That's a good idea @KNain. Or just say, I love your table, where did you get it from?

shakingmytambourineatyou · 13/11/2021 17:22

Just me then. I get annoyed with people who copy when I buy something nice.

maxineputyourredshoeson · 13/11/2021 17:27

I’d buy it.

We went to buy a new sofa last Saturday, we had one in mind but wasn’t keen when we actually saw it. We did really like another one. MIL (who is staying with us) has picked the same one for her new house. She’s still going to buy it. It just shows we both have great taste Grin

I'm sure it's not just you - some people don't like their 'style' being copied by those close to them. Others might be flattered.

StoneofDestiny · 13/11/2021 17:31

I'd not copy a friends furniture.

Whatinthelord · 13/11/2021 17:34

If you like it buy it.
I don’t get the weird thing people have about not getting the same as other people. Most peoples furniture is pretty similar anyway….very few people have a uniqu style of buy from places where only a few of the same piece of furniture is made.

If you’re not copying her all the time I don’t see the issue, especially as she rarely comes over.

Whatinthelord · 13/11/2021 17:36

This is a great suggestion. If my friend had an issue with me possibly having one piece of furniture the same as her I’d find this very odd,
WillYouDoTheFandango · 13/11/2021 17:54

My dad fits bathrooms. He did mine, brought me the brochures and I picked what I wanted. He then did my friends bathroom. She picked exactly the same thing not realising. My dad didn’t notice as he does so many, it was only when I went round that we knew.

My other friend picked 3 out of 4 paint colours (same brand, exact colour) for her house the same as mine.

We’ve all been friends for 20 years. We have the same taste. It really doesn’t matter.

Definitely not just you, just the ones who wouldn’t like it won’t admit it because they don’t want to be jumped on but like I said my sister is like this she use to ban her friends from ordering from the same clothes websites as her 😂 she didn’t want them having the same clothes
Rainbowsew · 13/11/2021 20:48

Buy what you want, I wouldn't even tell her you've got it. If she hardly comes over it doesn't matter anyway. Certainly don't "ask her permission".

I'm assuming it's from a shop that has multiple amounts in stock for anyone to buy and not one she has personally commissioned to be hand crafted out of unicorn horn and even it was and you wanted one why's shouldn't you?

Samedaysame · 13/11/2021 20:56

Omg just buy it. Why would you care who else has got it. Stop being a drama queen

Whatinthelord · 14/11/2021 08:35

What I love about people who worry about people copying them is there usually have the most generic taste.

Few years ago my cousin moaning the her friend has copied her by painting her living room grey…….. totally ignoring the fact it was a massively wide interior trend.

BigYellowHat · 14/11/2021 08:48

Just buy it

Scarby9 · 14/11/2021 08:55

You could always buy it, and in the unlikely event you invite her to your house, shove on a large tablecloth...

Rainbowsew · 14/11/2021 08:59

Absolutely this!

I remember a couple of friends talking about their decor and sharing pictures and thinking but they both are just generic copies of any furniture shop catalogue of the time.

Werehamster · 14/11/2021 15:22

That's quite a statement dining table though, so I probably wouldn't get the same one. It's different if it's just a bog standard one from ikea or somewhere like that.

cakewench · 14/11/2021 17:51

Buy it. Don't even mention it to her. If you only host once every 6 months or something, it's not even worth bringing up. Put a tablecloth over it if you are worried?

Leeds2 · 14/11/2021 18:03

Going against the grain here, but I would be a bit pissed off if a friend bought the same dining furniture as me. I know I don't "own" the furniture, I know that in the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter and, if my friend asked, I would say that I didn't mind. But I actually think I would.
