Coco cola flat!

waternfire · 08/11/2021 22:41

I know this is the biggest issue in the world but am so fed up with coke being flat! Like literally a brand new bottle! Just opened a fully sealed bottle, there is no fizz!
Over a year ago, my dad bought bottles of coke from a cash and carry, they had foreign writing on them, its actual coke brand that's sold in other countries, zero fizz or fizz dying out within seconds. In the last few months ive been noticing the same here, coco cola that is purchased from the big supermarkets here in the UK, when opened the fizz isn't really there, or if it is within seconds it's gone. I remember when coke used to be very fizzy, you could see the bubbles even after a few minutes, what I just poured from a new sealed bottle, there's not a single bubble, it tastes flat too.
I know it's just not this faulty bottle, as it's been happening for a few months, all bought from different stores.
Has the ingredients changed? Am referring the the 1.25 and 2litre bottles. The cans seem to be ok, although it's no where as near, as fizzy as it used to be.

You need to buy cans. I will only drink cans of coke as it’s always flat from a bottle.

  1. It’s bad for you
  2. It’s bad for the environment

Maybe the change in flavour is an invitation to quit the habit?

DeadButDelicious · 09/11/2021 07:43

I thought it was just me! Nothings seems to stay fizzy as long anymore.

Pepsi has definitely changed, it's rank now.

Cherry coke is the drink of the gods for me now. Used to be Ribera. It the less said about that the better fucking Jamie Oliver.

Come off it oh righteous one
Beautiful3 · 09/11/2021 07:45

I buy cans because of this.

Onetraumaatatimeplease · 09/11/2021 07:49

Don't know if this has any basis in scientific fact but a bartender once told me that coke tastes different depending on the container. He said the fizz reacts differently in plastic bottles it was always be fizzier in a metal can or from a tap.

BarbaraofSeville · 09/11/2021 07:51

Another vote for cans. I don't buy cola drinks of any variety, but I need tonic for my G&Ts and my preference is Waitrose 6 packs of 200 ml cans because I like the size, it's cheaper than Fever Tree, it has no artificial sweeteners and it is properly fizzy. Trouble is that it is hard to get as it is often sold out.

MarleneDietrichsSmile · 09/11/2021 07:54

It’s because of a massive shortage of the gas they put in to make it fuzzy (CO2?! Can that be right?)

Look it up

It’s been all over the news, and there has been a shortage of this ingredient for months now

icedcoffees · 09/11/2021 08:01

Coke in general is really horrible lately - I was a lifelong Diet Coke addict but switched to Pepsi Max last summer as the Coke just tasted awful and flat.

I've never had an issue with Pepsi Max cans not being fizzy Smile

courtshoe · 09/11/2021 08:25

I wonder if it's to do with a Co2 shortage as well?
Also it's getting much more difficult to find cans now in supermarket of the original coke.
It's all Coke Zero, Diet Coke, own brand, Vanilla Coke etc...

I don't drink a lot, but very particular when I do.
I'd almost go as far as avoiding a restaurant if they serve Pepsi rather than Coke

JunieSpoony · 09/11/2021 11:50

@courtshoe, me too on the avoiding restaurants that sell Pepsi!

I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks the taste has changed. I think the PP who said about the different taste in different containers is right. When I make salsa with tinned tomatoes I have a metal bowl the perfect size but can’t use it because it makes the tomatoes taste awful. Maybe Coke (the fizz? The high alkalinity??) is the same.

JunieSpoony · 09/11/2021 11:52

Whoops, should have said acidity!

TyneTeas · 09/11/2021 11:54

Pop in some mentos, that'll get it fizzingGrin

Chemenger · 09/11/2021 11:57

Plastic bottles are permeable to the carbon dioxide, so usually the drink is over-carbonated when bottles to allow for the loss through the bottle. Maybe the difficulties in delivering to supermarkets etc at the moment mean that bottles are spending longer in transit so are losing more fizz. Or maybe the CO2 shortage means they are over-carbonating less. Glass bottles and cans are not gas permeable, so they are more likely to be at an ideal carbonation level.

Yes, WTF have they done to Ribena. It just tastes of artificial sweetener.

Nasty.

DeadButDelicious · 09/11/2021 17:19

@BatshitCrazyWoman Ribena was so nice and it's awful now. It tastes nothing like it used to. The closest I've got is a black currant high juice from Asda. It's alright, I suppose, it's not the same though. I wouldn't mind paying extra for the full sugar version. I'm a grown up! Give me my juice dammit! 😂😂

waternfire · 09/11/2021 17:24

Am so glad it's not just me! The issue with having a can is, I don't want to consume the whole thing(shocker I know), I just want half a glass, so not to waste I would open a can if dh is home.
I do really like rubicon mango, passion fruit and guava, found on the world food isle, guess I'll just have to stick to those now that coke has let me down heavily

The full fat cherry ones seem okay. Not had any problems with those. I can't drink any of the ones with sweeteners in. They are bogging, make me thirsty and make my mouth and throat feel weird. I'm still mourning the loss of proper Irn Bru.

BunsOfAnarchy · 09/11/2021 17:34

Cans! Always get cans.
Never ever an issue with fizz with cans

labazslovesliving · 09/11/2021 18:51

wish they did sell flat coke love it me and partner always leave top undone a bit for couple days before drinking

I like Bottlegreen Juicy Bramble - it's nice hot, too.
