www.cnn.com/politics/live-news/roe-wade-abortion-supreme-court-ruling/index.html

Well, Roe V Wade is now history. I hope God can forgive those Justices because I surely won't.

This does not outlaw abortion completely, it just says that each state has the right to set its own laws. This also may have consequences when it comes to Federal vs State laws in other situations besides a woman's right to choose. What will be next? That each state can decide if it wants Jim Crow? OK, that's hyperbole, but you get my point.

Thousands of women in many states will now be forced to live in abusive relationships because one of the means of escape has been cut off. Thousands of women will never realize their career potential because of unwanted pregnancies. How many unwanted children are going to be born to women who either cannot afford them or didn't want them? The US has no 'safety net', no 'child benefit' and welfare payments are temporary and not enough to keep the wolf from the door. This is a tragedy of epic proportions.

I have never been so glad to be post-menopausal.

www.guttmacher.org/article/2021/10/26-states-are-certain-or-likely-ban-abortion-without-roe-heres-which-ones-and-why

Status of various states with regards to anti-abortion laws and bans. There are 26 states where abortion rights will be affected from total bans with no exceptions for rape, incest, or maternal/fetal health to restrictive laws just making it difficult or a legal liability to obtain an abortion.

DuncinToffee · 24/06/2022 15:51

Clarence Thomas writes, in a concurring opinion, that the Supreme Court should reconsider Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell — the rulings that now protect contraception, same-sex relationships, and same-sex marriage.

That is horrific, I have no words.

Roussette · 24/06/2022 16:06

I'm horrified. I saw this come up on Twitter and was just horrified

Jconnais1chansonquivavsenerver · 24/06/2022 16:45

Incandescent with fury. And this is but the beginning, if Thomas is to be believed. Bastards. Lying, cheating, bastards who allow guns more control than women have over their own bodies. Shits.

DuncinToffee · 24/06/2022 17:01

Nancy Pelosi close to tears in talking about Roe: “The hypocrisy is raging. The hurt is endless…a woman’s right to choose is on the ballot in November. We cannot allow them to take charge and achieve their goal: to criminalise reproductive freedom.”

Sad
AcrossthePond55 · 24/06/2022 20:58

They based this abhorrent ruling on the fact that abortion is not specifically mentioned in the Constitution, therefore it is not protected by the Constitution. This is going to create a whole slew of godawful decisions since homosexuality, birth control, gender equality, even some protections against racial inequality are not 'specifically mentioned' either.

Gilead, here we come. And I am not kidding. We're going to end up with some form of ultra right wing theocracy if something isn't done.

Roussette · 25/06/2022 06:49

My only hope is.... the pendulum has swung too far with this decision. And it will swing back. And the midterms will have women, and not just women, turning out in their droves.

I am pretty ignorant on everything US related, but I was just gobsmacked that 26 States will introduce this. I thought it would be just a handful. But 26???

DuncinToffee · 28/06/2022 20:54

I saw 'even Fox News' trending on twitter.

It seem like Cassidy Hutchison's testimony was a "devastating" testimony, even for them.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 29/06/2022 16:48

I have spent some of today trying, and failng, to imagine Biden throwing food at the wall in a tantrum.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 02/07/2022 13:45

Also, the Let's Go Brandon loons: do they not realise that when they wear their LGB teeshirts, they are supporting Lesbians Gays and Bisexuals? I have a short laugh every time I see such a shirt being portrayed.

DuncinToffee · 08/07/2022 09:30

It worked, thanks.

The big things it depends on are adding seats to the Senate at the midterms AND breaking the filibuster. You need the former to get the latter.

IF both Houses will agree to break the filibuster in the first place. Both parties have been loath to do it in the past because it can weaken their power during votes. Hopefully this is a big enough issue to swing the Dems as they've always been more against it than the GOP. But there are lots of subtleties and future considerations. What may work for Dems now may work against us later if/when the GOP gains the majority.

DuncinToffee · 21/07/2022 23:56

Only 8 Republicans vofed in favour

twitter.com/HuffPost/status/1550146190641176578?t=70yxe8Z9_BGe2EvTN6y_-g&s=19

NEW: The House passed the Right to Contraception Act on Thursday despite 195 Republicans who voted against it. The bill would codify the right to birth control and other contraceptives.

Roussette · 22/07/2022 06:43

What on earth are Republicans trying to do to women. It's barbaric. Hopefully it will be reflected in the midterms.

BruceAndNosh · 22/07/2022 14:33

The El Salvador reality is beginning to appear in the US.
A prominent YouTuber has described how after a miscarriage at 9 weeks, her doctor in Texas refused to do a D& C to remove the dead fetus because of worry of contravening the law.
She required 3 further scans to confirm that the pregnancy was non viable before she finally had the procedure 2 weeks later.

Women are also being questioned in Pharmacies when they try go collect prescription to complete the miscarriage, just in case they are trying to procure an abortion (the medication is same / similar)

Bannon verdicts:

Guy Reffitt, the Texas man who attempted to storm the Capitol while armed with a gun and zip ties, has just been sentenced to 87 months in prison.

It's the longest sentence yet in the Jan. 6 cases.
