The trouble with transparent lies is that even if you expect people to believe them (and Trump&Co clearly do) that doesn't make them so.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 08/04/2022 18:59

I happened to come across a list of the books that have been banned in various states; I haven't finished going through it by any means, only got as far as C in the authors, butb I am already baffled. Well, I can see why The Handmaid's Tale might get banned, but Peter Pan ???? or Who Is Malala Yousafzai? or Who are Venus and Serena Willliams?

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 08/04/2022 19:03

And I do wonder what on earth is offensive in My Family Plays Music by Judy Cox.

Does anyone have any idea whose cage that may have rattled, and why?

As far as many banned books, these days it seems that someone is able to pick a teeny thing, blow it out of proportion, then contact their GOP Rep and voila! Book banned! Mere whiffs of 'gayness' or 'non-Christian values' is enough to send a 'conservative virtue signaler' into hyperdrive.

IIRC The banning of Peter Pan usually has to do with the negative portrayal of Native Americans and the use of the racial slur 'pickaninny' by Peter. I disagree with banning it for this reason, but I do feel that a disclaimer about it being a 'product of its times' should be included for children to read. Also, there is reference to Peter 'thinning the herd' of the Lost Boys, taken to mean that he kills them. This has raised a few hackles, too.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 08/04/2022 21:30

I have to admit I never had much time for Peter Pan, but I hadn't realised it was Evil: I just thought it was a bit dull! (Apart from the crocodile.)

I suppose, on due consideration, that an Administrator in Pennsylvania wanted My Family Plays Music banned from the classroom because the family is African American, and one of them plays cello in a string quartet and another the fiddle for a country-and-western band -- that would mean they were "uppity", maybe. Folks like that ought to stick with jazz and know their place. Or something. I still think it's weird.

AcrossthePond55 · 09/04/2022 02:54

I haven't found anything online about that particular book being banned/someone wanting it to be banned. Do you have a source? I'd be interested to see what's up with that.

It's a child's picture book fgs.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 09/04/2022 11:47

It's in the PEN list of books that are being or have been banned in various parts of the USA this decade (I think it's only this decade). It's banned from classrooms in Central York, Pennsylvania since September 2021.

docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1hTs_PB7KuTMBtNMESFEGuK-0abzhNxVv4tgpI5-iKe8/edit#gid=1623346099

sorted by author and title. In that, it's number 286 out of 1587.

I too would like to know why it's banned there, but I think my best guess must just be what I wrote above; I can't find anything more either.

It's in some pretty good company, though: A Wrinkle in Time was banned from classrooms for a while in some places too, and Flowers for Algernon, and Black Beauty, and Green Eggs and Ham.

(I can't find reasons for any of them.)

AcrossthePond55 · 11/04/2022 15:32

@AskingQuestionsAllTheTime

I had a gander at the list. I think that book has been 'listed' or 'challenged' by an Adminstrator but not yet banned.

I wish that list linked to more information.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 11/04/2022 16:47

I was deceived by it being classed as "Banned from Classrooms" as opposed to just being "Banned Pending Investigation". They give the date for "challenge/removal", which also doesn't help: which is it?

I want "more data dammit", as a friend of mine frequently remarks about news stories. It's annoying to be given data-points and no attributions nor reference.

AcrossthePond55 · 11/04/2022 22:28

Agree, more info would be nice. Especially if they want that spreadsheet to be viewed and possibly used as some sort of reference by members of the public.

TBH I think the thing is that any prosecutor's office worth its salt knows that they are going to need an airtight case against Doofus. And that it's a 'one shot deal'. If he is acquitted in a criminal trial, he cannot be retried AND it will only boost his 're-electability' in certain circles. So circumstantial or 'he said/she said' type evidence just isn't going to cut it. And he (as far as we know) still has the financial resources to hire shark lawyers with low scruples and to have them tie things up in court for decades. So they need not only someone close to him to spill ALL the beans, they're going to need physical evidence, and I mean pics, texts, tapes of him directly ordering illegal actions. Unfortunately, I don't think they'll ever find that. Doofus has been very canny about putting layers upon layers upon layers between him and any actual 'crimes.

At this point I think the best we can hope for is (as one of the articles says) that the threat of criminal/civil filings will keep him from running again.
