My understanding is that Breyer is retiring at the end of the SCOTUS term, which is 3 October 2022 (1st Monday). The mid-term is 8 Nov.

However, they normally recess in early July and stay recessed until the next term starts. Hopefully that means we have ample time for hearings and confirmation well before the midterms. ACB was confirmed in 30 days, hopefully that is a precedent we can use to our advantage.

The Senate only needs a simple majority to confirm so hopefully that part will be OK. The only possible 'snag' is that the Judiciary Cmte needs a 'quorum' to vote in Committee and thus move the nomination to the Senate floor. If all of the 11 GOP Judiciary Cmte members refuse to attend, we may have a problem. I don't know what would happen then. And I don't know how many of them are hardcore Doofinistas or susceptible to pressure blackmail from Doofus.

Per TV NBC Special Report;

Breyer to officially retire this Summer (I didn't catch a specific date).

Biden states will announce his nominee for SCOTUS by the end of February and request expeditious confirmation. He used the word 'historic' with regards to the nominee so assume he will follow through with an African-American female.

DuncinToffee · 27/01/2022 18:33

Yes, I have seen various accounts reporting that Biden is committed to selecting a black woman to fill Justice Breyer’s seat.

And they will be the first Black woman nominated to the United States Supreme Court.'

Still following this thread even though I'm a bit quiet

I heard Biden yesterday talking of his aim to appoint the first black woman SC justice.
And the Republicans can hardly complain about how quickly this is done, can they?

DuncinToffee · 28/01/2022 09:06

US politics seem a bit tame at the moment compared to the UK Wink

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 28/01/2022 13:22

I'm not sure whether it is pathetic or terrifying that GOP idiots, in order to oppose anything Biden says or does, are apparently coming out in favour of Russia's right to invade Ukraine unhindered by NATO or the West, while at the same time other members of the GOP think Biden is not being tough enough with the Russians. Anything so long as it's All Biden's Fault.

As for "I get to read reports saying that intelligence is saying that Russians may be launching a cyber attack on America," Trump Jr. said -- why is he reading reports? In what capacity is he reading them? Or does he just mean "people in the media are saying"?

No, the Republicans haven't got a leg to stand on with regard to the timeline. 😊

Doofus Jr has no direct access to WH security briefings and is trying to insinuate that he's seeing intel that he patently is NOT. The only way that Doofus Jr could possibly have access is if Doofus Sr is still being briefed and is (as usual with him) shooting off his mouth. But that ain't happening. His 'I get to see...' is equal to his dad's 'I've been told by very important people....". Total bullshit.

In the normal course of things a former POTUS does continue to receive such briefings on a 'need to know' basis. But this is at the discretion of the current POTUS and Biden has nixed that for Doofus Sr.

Doofus Jr is talking out his arse, just like Doofus Sr always does.

I was making the tea today (bacon, egg, chips-made-in-the-oven, fried tomato, fried mushroom, because it's Sunday and we felt we deserved a treat for some reason) and got to pondering while I peeled the potatoes. I can imagine Joe Biden, faced with a kitchen, utensils and ingredients, making a perfectly good meal for himself and his kids; I cannot imagine Donald Trump being able to boil an egg competently.

lionheart · 31/01/2022 21:13

He had that omelette bar, didn't he?

Kamala is the foodie/chef though, isn't she?

I was thinking about all the fuss over the Le Creuset she bought and how no one ever made such a song and dance about say, the cost of a single gold club for any of the male presidents.

The bright side of so many Republicans saying that they won't vote for any candidate that refuses to claim that Biden stole the election I think I've hit all those negatives right Wink is that the Republican vote is damned either way Wink

The nutters will only vote for true Trump delusionists so may not vote if they don't have the option of a Trump "steal" supporter. A proportion of the 40% of relatively "sane" Republican voters may similarly be put off voting if they only have the option of a Trump conspiracy theorist.
