www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2022/01/january-6-insurrection-trump-coup-2024-election/620843/

'Technically, the next attempt to overthrow a national election may not qualify as a coup. It will rely on subversion more than violence, although each will have its place. If the plot succeeds, the ballots cast by American voters will not decide the presidency in 2024. Thousands of votes will be thrown away, or millions, to produce the required effect. The winner will be declared the loser. The loser will be certified president-elect.'

'The prospect of this democratic collapse is not remote. People with the motive to make it happen are manufacturing the means. Given the opportunity, they will act. They are acting already.

Who or what will safeguard our constitutional order is not apparent today. It is not even apparent who will try. Democrats, big and small D, are not behaving as if they believe the threat is real. Some of them, including President Joe Biden, have taken passing rhetorical notice, but their attention wanders. They are making a grievous mistake.'

I think the Mouthpiece (@realLizUSA) of Trump has removed her tweet quoting him once it was made clear that Trump wasn't saying what he THOUGHT he was, but the original Statement persists on Trumps website.
BruceAndNosh · 07/12/2021 12:16

Nope.
Her daft tweet is still there!

The American rich must absolutely loathe Donald Trump for getting a spotlight put onto this with his bragging and noise.

That wasn't really a Christmas tree, it was a metal framework wrapped in plastic. Ugly looking thing.

AcrossthePond55 · 08/12/2021 17:18

I disapprove of such shenanigans, but as a symbolic gesture to Fox....burn baby burn.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 08/12/2021 17:26

Mind you -- if what they want is something fifty foot tall to hang baubles on, it's probably better not to kill a living tree for the purpose. I get cross about Trafalgar Square every single year...

lionheart · 09/12/2021 11:12

Yes. Leave the tree alone.

I'm starting to get the feeling that the MSM positively wants to pull Biden down; they seem to find nothing even slightly positive to say about anything he does. And their dismissive nastiness about Harris is shocking.

lionheart · 09/12/2021 13:40

Yes, the Harris coverage (dishes, blue tooth etc) is especially awful.

Meanwhile, why do people not want to get vaccinated? Just politics? Or just stupidity?

"Of the 33 law enforcement officers in South Florida who lost their lives in the line of duty over the past two years, three were killed by gunfire, one died in a car crash and another lost his life to a work-related injury. The other 28 were felled by COVID-19."

My sad comment a couple up the thread about the MSM seems to have some reason behind it, which slightly surprises me:

It’s a Biden Boom—and No One Has Noticed Yet
If the current high levels of economic, job, and income growth continue, the 2022 midterms could look different than most are predicting.

www.nytimes.com/2021/12/09/nyregion/trump-subpoena-testimony-letitia-james.html?smid=tw-share

'The New York State attorney general, Letitia James, is seeking to question former President Donald J. Trump under oath in a civil fraud investigation, according to two people with knowledge of the matter, an unusual move that comes at a critical juncture in a parallel criminal investigation into the former president.

Ms. James, whose office is also participating in the criminal investigation being run by the Manhattan district attorney, Cyrus R. Vance Jr., is seeking to question Mr. Trump on Jan. 7 as part of her separate civil inquiry into his business practices.

If Ms. James finds evidence of wrongdoing, she could file a lawsuit against Mr. Trump, but she could not file criminal charges.'

(CNN)A federal appeals court Thursday ruled against former President Donald Trump in his effort to block his White House records from being released to the House select committee investigating January 6.

However, the DC Circuit Court of Appeals paused its ruling for two weeks so that Trump could seek a Supreme Court intervention.

It goes on ... and on ...

Curious to see what the Justice Department will do with Assange and how long this will also run.

That case leaves me unable to make up my mind. On the one hand, I have very little time for Assange for various reasons, and it also seems pretty clear that he's guilty as charged on at least some points. On the other, I wouldn't send a cockroach to jail in America.

If the US authorities are telling the truth and would deport him to serve his sentence in Australia if he is found guilty, that might alter my feelings a bit. But getting as far as sentencing him might take them several years, judging by the treacle-like speed the law seems to move in the USA at the moment.

AcrossthePond55 · 10/12/2021 15:10

SCOTUS decision just reached on Tx abortion law:

The question; "Can lawsuits go ahead challenging the structure of the Texas law?" SCOTUS says yes.

This means that people and organizations are entitled to file lawsuits against Texas state entities regarding the Tx law and and to have them heard in court. Texas tried to say that since they didn't 'ban' abortion, just said that people could get a bounty for 'snitching' that the state of Tx has no liability. This is a victory for pro-choice. Not a HUGE one, but it's a start.

www.cnn.com/politics/live-news/supreme-court-texas-abortion-law/index.html

Note; this decision does NOT overturn or 'stay' the law. It just means that it can be fought out in court.
