To be confused about friend’s Maldives holiday

A friend of mine had a ‘proper’ job but also sells FM cosmetics on the side. I know this is an MLM and so I’ve muted all her posts and she doesn’t try to sell to me so it doesn’t bother me and I don’t think about it.

However she’s recently (last week) been to the Maldives on a work trip which looked amazing, she said she didn’t have to pay for it it came through her ‘side hustle’ Hmm I guess I’m just wondering if that’s true? I always thought MLMs were a complete con and no one made money etc but I’ve seen the holiday pics and it’s a 5* resort! Also pictured are loads of other sellers of her particular thing (FM cosmetics).

To be clear I have no intention of buying products/joining/ and I genuinely think all MLMs prey on the vulnerable.

I have a friend with the same mlm, they've put in a lot of work and make a lot of money through it - and yes, they get free trips to the Maldives and other places.

It's not for me, personally, but I'm definitely envious of the free holidays!

thesockfairydidit · 02/11/2021 11:48

Her tickets to the “event” will be maybe free but she will have funded herself to get there….they are actively encouraged to fake it until you make it. A neighbour of mine used to pose in front of Radom cars she would hire for the day……

fatshitcrazy · 02/11/2021 11:49

I know someone in the same trip, I think they get the accommodation but have to pay their own airfare and for everything else while they are there. It's all a big con

CaptainCabinets · 02/11/2021 11:52

My parents did a similar MLM years ago (Kleeneze) and went on lots of all-expenses-paid holidays to some really amazing places they would never have had the means to go to otherwise. I think MLMs get a lot of flak but it is true that they really do send you on holidays like that, not that I’ve any intention of ever joining one Grin

User112 · 02/11/2021 11:53

You wont believe how fake the whole set up is!
They are either paying for a it themselves - either cash or through their commissions. The whole MLM thing is vultures. People at the top prey on those that sell.

vajingleberry · 02/11/2021 12:02

What is it that you are confused about?

RedCarsGoFaster · 02/11/2021 12:03

It's bullshit, just like the BMWs, imaginary new mortgages, high end clothes etc - they have to keep up the facade.

They usually get free accommodation, but have to pay flights, food, drink etc which can be big bucks. But if they don't go, they get sidelined. Imagine trying to pay for that when you make a pittance - it'll be credit card funded.

Same for the PP with parents doing Kleeneze - people are rarely honest about the realities of these "amazing trips".

This is a great read about the fake world of MLMs

My friend was part of an American MLM and used to get free trips all the time. She was the type of person who could sell ice to someone living in the North Pole. Her success was genuine and the trips were completely free but unfortunately it was all funded by her very large pyramid of sellers below her. She ended up leaving when one of her team broke down and admitted she was 30k in debt from faking it til she made it. After speaking to more of them she learned quite a few were in debt in an effort to make their sales figures look good and others were barely making a profit.

MakingTheBestOfIt · 02/11/2021 12:18

I can believe it.

I run an actual business. If, instead of hiring people and paying them a wage, I adopted an MLM model and made them pay to provide our service in exchange for what is basically a small amount of cash back on their purchases, I would have plenty of money left over at the end of each quarter to send them all to the Maldives and still be making a very healthy profit.

I don’t, of course, because I’m not a dick.

Besides, I’ve bet they are only providing the cheap part of the holiday (hotel).

grapewine · 02/11/2021 12:26

I can believe it. The people beneath her in the structure will have funded it.

You can’t pay your mortgage with free accommodation in a low cost-of-living country, though. It doesn’t change anything about what kind of “employment” pyramid scheme it is.

hoodathunkit · 02/11/2021 12:31

Either this is true or she is faking it

Many hunbots are encouraged to "fake it until you make it" in order to "manifest abundance"

The whole MLM industry is illusory and constructed on broken dreams, lies and betrayals

MrsMcCluskeysCat · 02/11/2021 12:31

Fake it till you make it.

She will have had to pay for the majority of it but obviously won't advertise that on FB. Ask her for proof she didn't pay for it and she won't be able to provide it.

This.

I run a business too. Converting to an MLM model is very financially tempting, but I'm not evil so I won't do it.

Those at the top of the pyramid win from the debt those below are in.

MrsMcCluskeysCat · 02/11/2021 12:33

It's like when they get a 'free car'. Except it's a PCP/HP taken out in their name which if they don't hit the ridiculously high sales target each month they won't be reimbursed for so have to cover the payments themselves.

Jacobijake · 02/11/2021 12:34

I thought as much! I guess it’s part funded and the sales people cover the rest and then says it’s all expenses paid to get others on board? Seems quite disingenuous but I’m not massively invested.

Im probably just jealous of the holiday.

The Watts family murders were linked to the parents involvement in a MLM

video here

There are videos about these horrific murders all over the www

Was your friend at this event that someone I follow on Instagram was posting about, an FM gathering in the Maldives… it looks like some kind of cult with everyone dressed on white!

This does happen in the Younique world for those who have a big enough team under them. Not sure how much of it is paid or not though.

Jacobijake · 02/11/2021 12:39

@CallMeRisley yes!!

Looks like a mass wedding for some religious cult with 10 brides to every groom.
EinsteinaGogo · 02/11/2021 12:46

I have an associate who's at the FM same event.

It's an 'all expenses paid' trip.

No idea exactly what is paid for, but whoever says it looks like a cult, I agree.

Looks like a beautiful place, but I'm sure there's a lot of brainwashing (you most wear white?!), let alone how BORING the conversation of a tonne of MLM reps must be.

Her WhatsApp group is always full of 'head office just gave us this amazing offer', 'who wants to buy a raffle ticket for this candle?, 'thanks for supporting my little business'.

I'm sure it seems like easy money, but it's not a career. I wish she'd put her energy and talent into something tangible.
