To be confused about friend’s Maldives holiday

A friend of mine had a ‘proper’ job but also sells FM cosmetics on the side. I know this is an MLM and so I’ve muted all her posts and she doesn’t try to sell to me so it doesn’t bother me and I don’t think about it.

However she’s recently (last week) been to the Maldives on a work trip which looked amazing, she said she didn’t have to pay for it it came through her ‘side hustle’ Hmm I guess I’m just wondering if that’s true? I always thought MLMs were a complete con and no one made money etc but I’ve seen the holiday pics and it’s a 5* resort! Also pictured are loads of other sellers of her particular thing (FM cosmetics).

To be clear I have no intention of buying products/joining/ and I genuinely think all MLMs prey on the vulnerable.

I have changed my user name in honour of this thread.

@Puzzledandpissedoff

Another deluded hunbot on the shill

You have to wonder why they do it, especially on a thread full of people who realise very well how it works (or doesn't) - after all folk are hardly going to say"Wow, I never realised; where do I sign?"

Maybe it's all part of the self-delusion, and to prop it up they just can't resist shilling everywhere they can?

It’s an interesting psychology behind cults and cult-esque movements. Basically once people believe something it’s really, really hard for them to accept anything else, to the point a thread like this will feel like a personal attack because deep down they’ve had their own reservations but allowed themselves to believe what they’ve been told. They’ve invested so much in the falsehood that admitting they got it wrong to themselves, let alone anyone else, becomes a monumental threat to their pride so they double down.

I don’t think that MLM poster was posting for anyone’s benefit but her own which tells me it’s touched a nerve.

Aquafizzle · 05/11/2021 19:15

Agree, she's indoctrinated.

Watching LuLaRich..it's fascinating.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 05/11/2021 19:24

I suspect you're spot on there, Cornettoninja ...

Gingernaut · 05/11/2021 19:29

Once hooked in, they don't want to believe they've been conned

Yes and chasing the non existent pot at the end of the rainbow..

What makes the whole thing even more toxic is that you're told that if you're not making money, it's your fault. You need to work harder, or try harder, or recruit more people. It's not the business model which is flawed, it's you, you big loser.

And they wonder why MLM fucks with people's mental health.

But you are also told that it is a really easy way to make money, you can do it around the family, a little bit each day when the baby has their nap, you can do all the family things whilst laughing at the people travelling to their J.O.B.
applesandbananasandoranges · 05/11/2021 21:09

Also watching LuluRich, both fascinating and disturbing.

And how did they manage to sell so much merchandise, the clothes look awful!

chaosrabbitland · 06/11/2021 12:42
This is a great read about the fake world of MLMs

ellebeaublog.com/poonique/
this was a lovely and eye opening read , thank you , i finished it yesterday , i did have a look at some you tube vids of ex younique presenters and its unbelievable , so many of them saying what a con it all was , how they hardly made any profit , having to spend all their money buying the stock to flog it to people in the first place ,
and it just sounds so mentally draining , having to video yourself putting it on , hosting parties , trying to sell it constantly , id rather section of a piece of my garden and count all the blades of grass one by one frankly it sounds that wearying

Slightly off-topic, I know, but the same is true of many people who voted for Brexit.

NJF2021 · 06/11/2021 21:01

I went in this trip & I my flight was laid with change left over 🤷🏻‍♀️…… if you would like the evidence I’ll be happy to send but I 100% did not pay one penny to go on this trip & happy prove!!!

NJF2021 · 06/11/2021 21:09

Get real ffs……. If it ain’t for you don’t do it but if I didn’t do it then god knows where my mental health would be so if you want to play that card….. it’s helped me so bloody much! 👌🏻

MorganKitten · 06/11/2021 21:18

My friend is probably on the same trip but the cost to get there, the food etc is around £1k
Also if you listen to the life after MLM, the trips aren’t always free and the add ones you pay for. One women paid $3k towards her tips to Disney.

NJF2021 · 06/11/2021 21:23

Your friend would have made it to the Maldives free of charge if she posted that, I was on the trip & FM covered everything, the only thing I had to do personally was boom a flight that suited me eh at cost £836 & within 24 hours FM paid £850 into mr bank account to cover it…. I have proof if all of you people that don’t believe need it! & as for you even questioning your pal……. She’s clearly made it huni & done so well that she made this trip….. maybe you should congratulate her rather than starting a thread in mums net in absolute disbelief that your friend could smash this…….. 💪🏻 Just saying!! 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻

MrsPworkingmummy · 06/11/2021 21:23

My best friend has worked for FM for 2 years and has around 200 people below her in her team. She goes on loads of what she tells me are free holidays, has a free car and was able to earn more than what she was earning as a teacher and stay at home with her beautiful family. If she is faking it, she's doing a bloody good job of doing so.

SophieKaczynsky · 06/11/2021 21:26

@NJF2021 did they pay accommodation? Food?

NJF2021 · 06/11/2021 21:48

Would you ever knock back car payments monthly if you got the chance?? 💗💗

Whitefire · 06/11/2021 21:57

@NJF2021

Would you ever knock back car payments monthly if you got the chance?? 💗💗
I own my car, but that is by the by.

Anyway I would rather sick pay, pension contributions, and guaranteed monthly pay packet then car payments personally.

MLMshouldbeillegal · 06/11/2021 21:59

@NJF2021

Would you ever knock back car payments monthly if you got the chance?? 💗💗
Absolutely I would, if the payments were conditional on continuing to exploit other people and con them into joining the scam, hun.
Puzzledandpissedoff · 06/11/2021 22:08

I'm sorry you've had MH problems, NJF2021, and genuinely pleased you feel the MLM stuff is helping, but you might want to resist leaning on it too heavily and keep others avenues open

It's pretty obvious you're in the completely enmeshed stage - "huni", "smashing it", insisting what sellers post must be true - but except for a tiny few near the top who genuinely do make it, the come-down can be pretty difficult when it finally arrives

Siriisatwat · 07/11/2021 06:39

Oh man, the “smashing it” and 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻 emojis.

There aren’t enough eye rolls in the univers.

Siriisatwat · 07/11/2021 06:39

Universe, even.

MrsMcCluskeysCat · 07/11/2021 07:29

@NJF2021

Yes if it meant having to make the unaffordable payments myself if I didn't reach my targets that month, imagine if you got long covid or another long term illness Sad.

Instead I earn enough to own my car (which actually happens to be a white merc) outright, so I don't have to worry about the payments!

MrsMcCluskeysCat · 07/11/2021 07:31

@NJF2021

I'm glad it's helped your mental health but what about the mental health of your downlines who are likely getting into ££ debt to keep going?
