November 1st Christmas lights?

I had to go and get petrol tonight, and saw two houses already decorated for Christmas. Obviously it's up to them, but I can't help thinking I'd be sick of them by Christmas if I put mine up now. Have you put yours up yet? Am I being unreasonable to think it's a tad early?

We put ours up mid December, and by 12th night I’m ready to take them down. Actually I’m ready on Boxing Day, but I don’t!

WisestIsShe · 31/10/2021 19:06

I agree if it's full on Christmas, however I have white fairy lights in my front room window at this time of year. They just add a lovely, warm, gentle light to a dark, cold room. It's a curtain light, not twinkly etc

Notaroadrunner · 31/10/2021 19:08

Ours go up the last Friday in November to coincide with the Late Late Toy Show (in Ireland).

DrunkenKoala · 31/10/2021 19:12

Some of the houses by mine are lit up for Halloween mostly with orange lights but some with other coloured light or just plain white and then pumpkins, skeletons and cobwebs so you can tell it’s Halloween.

Last year lots did decorate early and now the clocks have gone back I wonder if people will do it again.

icedcoffees · 31/10/2021 19:13

We have warm white fairy lights up year round in our living room Grin

Howareyouflower · 31/10/2021 19:18

I keep lights on my dresser and mantelpiece year round, but the houses I saw had Santas and reindeer....

Mine go up the first weekend in December - so that'll be the 4th/5th this year.

I have actually got Halloween decorations, bought by my MIL when DC were little, they remain firmly in the garage most years 😂.

PinkiOcelot · 31/10/2021 19:21

It’s getting earlier every year.
A local garden centre has had their Christmas display done since mid August. Ridiculous.

RachelHasThoseInBurgundy · 31/10/2021 19:22

I’m usually of the “have them up for as short a period as possible” mindset but my exMIL has been given a terminal diagnosis and is putting hers up tomorrow and very tempted to join her. I don’t think I will, as I would get fed up looking at them but this last year has been utterly crap so I totally get the feeling of wanting that cost Xmas joy.

Christmas1988 · 31/10/2021 19:22

Once I commented on somebody having their lights up early, my colleague quickly stamped on my foot then later told me, they never took them down last year so that’s why they are still up. Maybe that’s what you’ve seen tonight.

Marelle · 31/10/2021 19:22

We put ours up on the first weekend of Dec and take them down after NYE. I think four weeks of extra electricity is quite enough! It’s not special any mor if you start having them up for months.

FayKnights · 31/10/2021 19:28

I was going to say that they might be for Diwali, but it sounds like it’s full on Christmas rather than just lights.
I am itching to put on Heart Christmas and start sneaking up a few lights!! 😁

What is too early? We’ve had external halloween decorations up for over a week now - they will come down tmrw.

External Christmas lights will go up next week and internal lights and tree will be up by the end of November.

It’s just how we do it and how we like it and we never get tired of the beautiful lights / real tree / festive happiness!

SantasLittleHoHoHo · 31/10/2021 20:28

1st November here for outdoor lights! I already have three trees up in my house, some nutcrackers, garlands up the stairs, about five wreaths, Santa signs, mini figures, mini Santa's etc 😂 genuinely it's like the North Pole here!!

dementedma · 31/10/2021 20:30

Have some lovely new fairy lights up across the mantlepiece. Looks a little bit festive but not too much!

PeachesPumpkin · 31/10/2021 20:30

Last year there was a Lockdown Lights thing where people put their lights up in November - it did cheer me up.
This year I think it is back to normal and lights up in December.
Each to their own though. I do think they look pretty.

BruceAndNosh · 31/10/2021 20:35

I watch a few YouTubers from the US who do mostly house and home content.
I expect their "Holiday Decor" vids to appear next week,. Usually first week of November!
I always thought the best thing about Thanksgiving was that no one mentioned Christmas until after it, but obviously I was wrong!

FlibbertyGibbitt · 31/10/2021 20:37

Might be for Diwali ?

Nanalisa60 · 31/10/2021 20:38

To early 1st December in my opinion is the earliest that the decks should go up. But I will start wrapping the presents, writing the cards, deep clean the house, and do all the jobs I hate , defrost the freezer, give the oven a really good deep clean , move all the furniture and clean underneath, empty out and clean all kitchen cupboards , clean all windows and blinds, so by the beginning of December I can put up decks in a lovely clean and shiny house. I really like to enjoy December so having the house all sorted makes it a lot easier.

EatSleepRantRepeat · 31/10/2021 20:41

YANBU. I'm not that bothered what my neighbours do but the early Christmas stuff in the shops ruins the sense of occasion for me. It's bad enough that Christmas has been appropriated by people who look down on Christians the rest of the year, but even the commercial stuff isn't special when you can buy mince pies in October.

Poptart4 · 31/10/2021 20:42

@Notaroadrunner

Ours go up the last Friday in November to coincide with the Late Late Toy Show (in Ireland).
Also in Ireland..... its kind of an unwritten law that the tree has to be up for the Late Late toy show.
JurgensCakeBaby · 31/10/2021 20:46

Our local M&S was playing Christmas music yesterday..
Ours go up first weekend of December. It's too much faff to do it a week before Christmas then take it down again, also I love fairy lights in the winter

Thepennysjustdropped · 31/10/2021 20:48

I would like to see it all wait until after Remembrance Sunday. I saw Christmas food in Sains with a use by date of 10th Nov. It's daft. Might as well just scoff it all year round.

superram · 31/10/2021 20:50

Yabu, simply because I’ve still got up mine from last year. Indoor, waterfall type lights fall behind my curtains but give off a lovely warm light. We went into lockdown so kept them up and although not in much in the summer we’ve had them in since September.
