Australia should be heavily criticised for its lack of environmental improvement

So why does Australia get away with being so bad.
Ranked worst of 57 countries. A rich country that could afford to do mire.
Come on Australia do your bit.

More not mire.

They are particularly bad yet appear to get away with it.

Pretty sure China are even worse and a lot richer

SelkieQualia · 31/10/2021 10:17

As an Australian, I wholeheartedly agree. Unfortunately our current PM is a coal industry puppet. Really hopes he goes at the next federal election, which should be soon.

How does that exonerate Australia exactly? Scott Morrison is a disgrace

nc777 · 31/10/2021 10:21

Because Aus relies so heavily on the resources industry. That's why they're a rich country.

Not sustainable or environmentally friendly.

Bringonthepjs · 31/10/2021 10:22

China is actually developing a lot of renewables, they also have a bit of a plan to cut back on coal unlike Australia ...

Why on earth would you believe something so obviously untrue?

Unless you mean that Australia has fewer people than China, which is true but hardly the point.

Weesiewoo · 31/10/2021 10:27

As an Australian, I agree. Trying to do my bit with solar, electric car, recycling and cutting way back on meat and dairy. The infuriating thing is our dickhead prime minister. He is a disgrace and if he is not voted out at the next election we are moving back to Europe.

Precisely. Whataboutery as usual. That doesn't explain why Australia are so bad. Ranked the worst of 57 countries.

Exactly. Solar energy for Australia could be used so much more.

Indeed, why are Australia let off so much. Get a plan. Start working to contribute.

Australia could have spent the last 30 years developing solar technology, instead it has pandered the mining companies who make huge donations to those in power. I hate our government so much.

Totally agree. They have so far got away with this. They need to be made to contribute with a plan to help. Afterall, Australia will see the consequences of their environmental damage .

Bringonthepjs · 31/10/2021 10:36

I am totally baffled that a country with so much space and sunshine didn't develop solar power decades ago or at least embrace it now? The jobs could shift from digging up coal to manufacturing panels, turbines etc.

Bringonthepjs · 31/10/2021 10:37

They stand to suffer so much too with drought and bush fires, honestly baffled here

Laserbird16 · 31/10/2021 10:37

Yep, as an Australian our 'leadership' should be held accountable for their non-plans to tackle climate change. It's a disgrace. ScoMo is the handmaiden of the fossil fuel industry and as a politician would be embarrassing if he wasn't so destructive. The whole bunch of them can get in the bin as the opposition won't get off its belly either.

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 31/10/2021 10:38

Yanbu OP I have often wondered this myself. Australia are resource rich and doing financially well in the current status quo. However they have a so much to lose from climate change - not sure those in power care.

Weesiewoo · 31/10/2021 10:39

To be honest, we did embrace it. Solar is very popular. Government rebates in some states. It just should be the world leader when it comes to solar innovation. Sadly not

megletthesecond · 31/10/2021 10:39

Are they not very good? I'm shocked. I assumed they would be aa they have to deal with those awful fires.

Up until 2 weeks ago Scomo was not going to Glasgow, he basically was shamed into it.
His plan was written at the last minute, like a kid handing in a shit last minute school project.

Most people don't realise how bad Australia is. The focus tends to be elsewhere where. I will be honest until recently I had no idea either. They should as a rich country be forced to do more, gave a plan and sign up to improve drastically.
