Australia should be heavily criticised for its lack of environmental improvement

So why does Australia get away with being so bad.
Ranked worst of 57 countries. A rich country that could afford to do mire.
Come on Australia do your bit.

@Knittinglibby

I have seen Australia in a very different light over the last 5-10 years, especially related to the climate. Helped by the fact I have family members who live there and three close friends from there. Between family and friends, several work directly in policy, public health and social justice. They have really opened my eyes to what is lacking in Australia and some of the barriers to significant change. They feel Australia is a good 10-15 years behind many other developed nations with respect to so many areas of policy, environment, social justice, women's rights, human rights & ethics.
Such a mumsnet classic '"Australia is a cultural backwater". Sorry, but that's nonsense. Yes, the climate stuff and refugee detention is a blight, but on other issues, on average, Australia is about equivalent to the UK, and is streets ahead with our public health system.

If it’s only domestic violence/homelessness that is pointed out I would think Australia is no different to the UK/USA/Canada in regards to stats? I thought we were all roughly aligned on how often we are abused by men, killed by men and failed by authorities? In which area is Australia worse off than counterparts in these aspects?

Not sure about the homeless shelters, your area is not aligned with mine. I did a quick Google and got a full page of women’s shelters and refuges that cover homelessness.

I think this has changed though as my mum used to work at a women’s shelter post retirement (and a men’s shelter and ……., all added up to a full-time jobConfused). This was quite some time ago and I recall the address/detail was not made public as the same places were used for women fleeing domestic violence as those suffering general homelessness and they didn’t want the women there to be unsafe. People could access them but it was via a service as opposed to looking it up in the phone book. Now in the digital age though it looks as though there are heaps of places (for homelessness) where details are publicly available.
