To expect the hippy woo shop to be relaxing (light hearted)

We sometimes visit a hippy woo type shop in the nearby town. It's full of lovely incense, mobiles, crystals, clothing etc. and it's well worth visiting......

However......

.........The atmosphere is so tense when you go inside 😬

They have relaxing spa music playing and books on yoga, but the people who staff it are downright scary. You're glared at as soon as you enter, there's lists of rules on the walls - not covid related - questions are answered with a bark and the people are tense and irritable. I can't wait to leave. Dh agrees that it has a tense vibe.

I think visiting a hippy woo shop should be nice and relaxing, AIBU?

The vibes don't match what they are selling, that would be a big turn off from me and a visit to a shop like that should make you feel better after leaving than when you walked in.

The energy and atmosphere in a shop is very important, especially in a shop like that. They have it arseways.

BarefootHippieChick · 28/10/2021 15:15

They're probably tense and grumpy because they don't get much custom, and they still haven't figured out why

SoniaFouler · 28/10/2021 15:18

People say Glastonbury centre is meant to be all hippy and woo and peaceful. I actually found a lot of people there downright hostile and nasty.

lilyfire · 28/10/2021 15:25

Yes, I’ve had some hostile vibes/comments from woo shop people in Glastonbury.

I love woo stuff but this made me chuckle.

OP did you forget your mask and as a consequence misaligned their chakras as you entered the shop?

jamandmarmalade · 28/10/2021 16:01

There's a woo shop in Seven Dials in Neal Street near Covent Garden and that's eerily quiet there. I don't mean quiet because they are busy restocking geodes but they just stand still don;t smile or say hello.

I don't like it when staff follow you round asking ''is there something in particular you are shopping for today?'' but a smile or a nod as you come in is welcoming.

purplecorkheart · 28/10/2021 16:02

i a, m just curious but what was the list of rules? They are clearly not a great advertisement for their business.

number87inthequeue · 28/10/2021 16:04

There was a shop in my town that was a bit like this. One half of the shop was 'hippy' type stuff like OP describes and the other half was vegetarian foods/eco friendly toiletries etc.

Sadly, the staff and owners were nothing short of hostile to most people who went in. On one occasion I went in specifically to buy tofu. The man behind the counter looked me up and down, rolled his eyes at his colleague and basically told me I'd not understand how to cook it, then ignored me until I left. My 30+ years of cooking and eating vegan and vegetarian foods apparently were not clear enough from the way I dressed.

Talipesmum · 28/10/2021 16:04

I expect they lined the crystals up all wrong and the energy lines are clashing in Aquarius.

There is one in Bridgnorth we visited its fabulous calm peaceful friendly staff very busy even has a donation table where you can collect a shell or something and give a donation to the child who collected it

Okay, this is unbelievable, but true. There was a notice asking people not to roughly handle the crystals because it upsets their vibrations.

Wow, I wonder how the crystals survived all those tectonic forces underground Confused

Anyway I have often noticed this - hippy woo shop people are quite often humourless gits, and also they are the type to have their mates in chatting to them, and they all look at you in a slightly annoyed way when you dare to come in with the intention of you know, maybe buying something.

I reckon they are grumpy gits to start with and got into hippy woo because they thought it would change their lives.

Have to say I found the opposite. I went to visit a friend who was working there and left my purse in a phone booth there (so - a while ago!) and only realised next morning. I went down the street in the vain hope it might be lying empty in a gutter when some hippy bounced up to me and said, 'Are you X's friend?' I said yeah and mentioned what had happened. He said - Oh it's still there. I saw it earlier.' And it was. with all the money in it.

Yes, she did have someone in with her and they were having a bit of a disagreement which further heightened the tension.

I like crystals because they're pretty, but now I'm wondering if I've been upsetting them in some way if they're so sensitive 😆 I'll pop them outside in a bowl of prosecco under the full moon to see if that helps.

They're not, unless the Nag Champa is giving them a headache and that's making them grumpy.

I think the crystals from there will already be upset, they need cleansing in the moonlight.

Ha ha! That’s cheered me right up.

I used to frequent one in my youth. The owner was very intense. Very intense. Apparently crystals were no laughing matter.

I only wanted joss sticks to mask the fag smoke in my bedroom.

I worked in one once. I loved the vibe, the shop cat and loads of the customers. My boss was fucking awful though. I applied there because I knew two of the staff members and they were beyond lovely. Then I got the job and found out that those two staff members were actually the owners husband and friend and they'd ran off together!
