Sadly not surprised, I would though be very surprised if it was granted. Horrible to put her loved ones through more torment when they were starting to get some closure.

MissChanandlerBong81 · 27/10/2021 13:16

He has nothing to lose I suppose! But I’d be astonished if he were even granted permission to appeal, let alone successful on appeal.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 27/10/2021 13:17

I'm not surprised he's doing this. He has nothing to lose. Chance of success infinitisemal, though, I assume.

VickyEadieofThigh · 27/10/2021 13:17

it goes with the territory - appalling man feels entitled.

IHateCoronavirus · 27/10/2021 13:18

Selfish, sick, twisted, fuck. Angry

mbosnz · 27/10/2021 13:18

For Sarah's family and friends to be put through this again, is horrendous. Also, for his family, his children, to have this reopened is horrendous. Could someone just accidentally put him in General Population, or something?

He's seriously not thought this through. He's safer in prison than out of it.

JustLyra · 27/10/2021 13:19

I’m not surprised. Even though it’s extremely likely to fail he has nothing to lose.

VladmirsPoutine · 27/10/2021 13:20

I'm not surprised he's appealing but it absolutely will not happen. The literal Duchess of Cambridge went to pay her respects, people who even think the police are generally a force of good spoke out against the police. It won't happen.

SpindelWhorl · 27/10/2021 13:21

I'm surprised I was momentarily surprised at this.

It was inevitable, I suppose. I feel so bloody sorry for Sarah Everard's family and friends. I hope this is a strictly judicial desk-top exercise and that her family don't have to (or feel they have to) appear in a court setting again.

The convicted murderer has a right to appeal. It will go through due process. I think the original trial judge was absolutely meticulous in setting out the reasons for imposing a whole life tariff, and I don't remember any legal commentators raising concerns about there being any potential grounds for the whole life tariff being successfully appealable.

Think of it as a pointless legal process. He's going to die caged in prison, clearly unhappy and dissatisfied about that.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 27/10/2021 13:22

He seemed surprised he was even done for this, he clearly doesn't have a normal brain.

JustLyra · 27/10/2021 13:24

I’d also wonder if it was partly about controlling money. I know a man (not a murderer) who insisted on paying for private legal assistance, even though he’d have been entitled to part funding from legal aid, and it was purely way to run through any money he and his divorcing him wife had. The house had to be sold and everything. She and their child were left with nothing and he was quite open about wanting to spend everything before the divorce was finalised so she couldn’t “build a new life with his cash” once he was jailed.

BettyCarver · 27/10/2021 13:29

I'm assuming this is pretty much standard procedure.... there have been other heinous murderers who've gone through the same thing, applying to appeal against their tariff. So it's not about him genuinely thinking he has a chance of it being reduced, more a case of a legal process being followed. Perhaps some legal bod can clarify? I also assume (hope) that he won't even be granted permission to continue. This stage is only an application.

HeartsAndClubs · 27/10/2021 13:29

It’s standard practice.

Sarah’s family will likely have been warned that this is likely.

But even if he appeals it means nothing. He’s entitled to appeal in the same way he’s entitled to a defence, but it still won’t happen. In fact he may not even be granted leave to appeal.

x2boys · 27/10/2021 13:30

I very much doubt he would win any appeal ,and even if by some miracle the whole life tarrif was overturned ,I still think he will be in Jail for the rest of his life

MarshmallowSwede · 27/10/2021 13:35

Men always have the audacity don’t they? Imagine falsely arresting a woman, raping her and then killing her and then having the audacity to appeal your rightly deserved life sentence.

If he gets a lighter sentence then women in the Uk should riot. This is disgusting.

Lockheart · 27/10/2021 13:35

Everyone has the right to request an appeal, it's a fairly basic part of our legal system. We can't withhold it just because we don't like someone.

I doubt he will be successful, but appealing is pretty par for the course.

Shade17 · 27/10/2021 13:36

As foul as he is, why would you not appeal a full life term? As PPs have said he has nothing to lose!

Aqua55 · 27/10/2021 13:37

Why is he safer in prison?
CherryPipss · 27/10/2021 13:39

It's just part of the legal system. I can't get too worked up about it. Most prisoners would do the same I suppose - it's an Avenue to go down

Will it work? Of course not - and thank god for that.

Sparklesocks · 27/10/2021 13:42

Admittedly better informed MNers will know more than me, but isn’t that standard process? I assume his lawyer has to show they’re doing everything they’re can as part of the job.

It won’t get overturned though.

LadyCampanulaTottington · 27/10/2021 13:42

@Aqua55 someone will create their own brand of justice on him if he’s free. Eye for an eye comes to mind.

Sparklesocks · 27/10/2021 13:42

*they can

There is nothing to riot about here. The right to appeal is part of our legal process. Likely every known murderer has appealed their sentence, and in some cases even their conviction. This isn’t something which is new because of Wayne Couzens or even to men. IIRC rose west also appraised her sentence….
