Cold Pizza in lunchbox?

302 replies

PizzaInLunchbox · 26/10/2021 13:31

Odd or fine?

My 7yo is saying it’s her favourite (not warm or hot cold) and she wants it for lunch at school.

I’d obviously cook the pizza the night before let it cool right down. Would be just cheese and tomato as she doesn’t like any other kind of pizza.

WIBU to put a cold slice of pizza in her lunchbox instead of sandwiches? I’d also include a small biscuit (like a penguin), cucumber and/or carrot sticks, an apple or banana, and then some cocktail sausages or similar.

Just pondering for next week when shes back.

Cold pizza is fine. Homemade would be better than shop bought.
I freeze leftover slices and dc will get it about once a week.

Don't need cold sausages as well though.

@Brieandcamembert was joking??
About pizza not being a lunch food...

Was she???

Tigerblue · 26/10/2021 14:54

We're all happy to eat leftover pizza for lunch here, so I don't see any difference to putting it in a lunchbox. As mentioned before though, I wouldn't add both sausages and a chocolate biscuit, especially if you hope she'll eat the fruit and veg.

Blackmagicqueen · 26/10/2021 14:54

I think that is absolutely fine. To make it healthy i make a greek yoghurt flatbread (literally 3 ingredients and so easy) then i use a tomato veg sauce I've batch cooked and then the cheese. This way it is nutritious and the dc still enjoy it.

viques · 26/10/2021 14:55

Surely cold pizza is for breakfast not lunch? Leaves thread shaking head at the odd way other people run their lives.

I give it to my son, so i don’t get told off by school for unhealthy lunches I use a cookie cutter and cut out circles so it doesn’t look like a slice of pizza and add a bit of sweet corn.

@ADreadedSunnyDay

Bloody hell. I would hate a lot of PP to see what goes in DS lunchbox ... and can someone explain why an open toasted cheese and tomato sandwich on foccacia (ie generally full of salt) is healthier than pizza ..
That was a joke, hence the Grin

She'll eat the fruit and veg first, probably more likely to put them on top of the pizza and eat them like that (although if I cook it like that she won't eat it Hmm)

Why not swap it out for sadness and dust.

Absolutely spot on @Pedalpushers

I was coming on to suggest sending them in with the hoover bag but you beat me to it! extra points for "swap it out" too

Do you not think the sadness might be a bit "carby" though?

@gamerchick

Why does hummus always get brought up on these threads? I never met anyone who liked it as a kid. Never mind being given it in a school lunch box.
I wonder that too @gamerchick. Personally, even at my advanced age, I'd rather eat wallpaper paste, and I know few children who would eat it, especially when it's been in a room temperature lunch box for several hours.
godmum56 · 26/10/2021 15:00

goes off the eat pizza

Maryann1975 · 26/10/2021 15:01

@Brieandcamembert

Not great having pizza sausage and chocolate as a lunch. Very nutritionally poor even with a couple of veg sticks thrown in.

How about wholewheat hummus and veg wraps or cream cheese / chicken sandwiches. No sausage chocolate or pizza but maybe a yoghurt and fruit with a wrap or sandwich?

Pizza is an ocassional treat not a school lunch.

FFS! I didn’t even try hummus till I was 40 and I didn’t rate the Stuff. One Out of three of the dc thought it was ok, but the tub went off Without being finished and the second tub I bought didn’t get opened. So giving hummus to my dc in their lunch box would be a waste of time.
One of the dc And dh take cold pizza whenever we’ve had pizza For tea as I always over cater (on purpose so there is a lunch for whoever wants It). The dc sometimes report back that someone has had a can of coke and a mars bar in their lunch box- that is a shit lunch. I really can’t get worked up about cold pizza, if I had to have a packed lunch, it’s the kind of thing I’d take - I hate sandwiches and can think of nothing worse with having to have one every day. A bit of pizza as a change sounds much better.

Exactly. Sometimes I’m glad I had seventies childhood. Granted I was probably lucky to make it to adulthood, but at least my DM hasn’t heard of humous.
IARTNS · 26/10/2021 15:06

Well I'm having pizza tonight after reading this Grin

FudgeOff · 26/10/2021 15:06

@thedancingbear

*This is bollocks. Most unhealthy food is quadrilateral - chocolate, sausage sandwiches, steak bakes. Fish fingers.

Healthy food - apples, potatos, hummuses, advocado, is usually round.

You're not a nutritionist, are you? Your poor kids.*

Now you're just talking shite. Hob Nobs are round. I ate one back in 1996 and have never been the same since.

Ruined my life, it did.

Besides, what's a (breaded) fish finger, if not a cod sandwich? Grin

Whattheduck · 26/10/2021 15:07

My dd’s 16 and at college and still loves taking cold pizza for lunch (especially if it’s leftover dominoes pizza)
She hates sandwiches

ShirleyPhallus · 26/10/2021 15:07

@Honeyroar

Come pizza is really common picnic food in Italy.
Well I’ve tasted it several ways but never on a pizza

How does this answer the question?
I'm a grown up and if I thought I was getting pizza and someone gave me hummous I'd probably cry not be very happy!🤣

Op my kids usually gave cold pizza in their lunch box on a Thursday. They love it.

My kids love it. I should probably give them it more! But I bet if I came on here and asked if it was an OK lunch someone would say no, have you thought about something more substantial like a bit of pizza? Grin
boomchikawowwow · 26/10/2021 15:18

I do this for my teens and they love it. I make pitta bread pizzas with various toppings for them.
They're already bored of sandwiches in their lunches.

Helpel · 26/10/2021 15:19

My daughter is fussy about sandwich fillings and only really likes tuna sweetcorn (she would of course have jam or nutella if it was toal free choice!). As a result we have done cold pizza at least once a fortnight so that she doesn't overdose on mercury (can't win can you?!). We buy the mini 99p Aldi cheese and tomato ones. Nutritionally i expect they are not great, but hey, cheese = calcium, tomato sauce = vegetable, so you know, I'm good with it 😂 For the lunchbox police out there she also has a couple of cherry tomatoes thrown in! OP deffo do the cold pizza!

HereWeGoAgains · 26/10/2021 15:19

Crudités is something else that always get brought up on MN as the solution to all dietary dilemmas.

Although in real life I never hear them called that and my kids don’t eat them anyway.

IntermittentParps · 26/10/2021 15:22

I'm with her; while I do like pizza hot when it's fresh, I actually live for the leftovers and they MUST be cold.
