Pants!

dobbinsleftleg · 22/10/2021 12:21

DH and I do our own laundry, but he was stressing this week as he's got his first business trip since last year and he was fretting about having enough clean pants and socks.

I said if he was running that low he should just buy some more, but apparently NINE pairs is a perfectly adequate number of pants for a man to own already.

AIBU to think that owning at least two week's worth of pants is a basic adult thing to do?

Would certainly be less stressful and its not like they take up much room!

NuffSaidSam · 22/10/2021 12:23

I think nine is fine if that's what you need.

If he is stressing that he doesn't have enough then clearly it isn't fine and he should buy some more.

But YABU to suggest that someone isn't an adult if they don't have 14 pairs of pants. I think that's a very odd view.

MatildaTheCat · 22/10/2021 12:32

Who doesn’t put the washing on for 14 days?

Sparklesocks · 22/10/2021 12:36

I have loads of pants yet still worry I haven’t taken enough whenever I go away. I seem to be anxious that I’m going to have loads of accidents based on how many I end up taking!!

BananaPB · 22/10/2021 12:45

I'm assuming he's on business for 14 days?

ThePants999 · 22/10/2021 12:45

You called?

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 22/10/2021 12:50

Well if his panicking he hast got enough.
Some people could manage with two pairs. Others like a decent supply of spares.

Like being able to go on human without worrying about running out.

InTheLabyrinth · 22/10/2021 13:00

I'm not sure I have 9 pairs of pants.
I only have more than that number of socks, as DH buys me brightly coloured ones with cats on every Christmas, and I need boring ones for work.
I definitely dont have 9 bras.
Not sure I have 9 teeshirts. I definitely dint have 9 pairs of trousers.
What's the fixation with 9?

BananaPB · 22/10/2021 13:17

Maybe the h bought his pants in packs of 3?

CoalCraft · 22/10/2021 13:22

Yeah I think enough for a fortnight is about right. Maybe a pack for Christmas? Grin

Notimeforaname · 22/10/2021 13:24

Leave him to his 9 pairs then. If its enough..its enough

Werehamster · 22/10/2021 13:26

I think 14 pairs is way too many. Surely, a week's worth is plenty. Buying fewer clothes is better for the environment.

MrsRobbieHart · 22/10/2021 13:28

I think 9 is enough. I have more than 9 but I probably only wear the same 7 pairs and the rest don’t get looked at.

HereticFanjo · 22/10/2021 13:30

😂😂😂
ProcrastinationIsMySuperPower · 22/10/2021 13:33

You'd need a fortnight's worth to go away on holiday for a couple of weeks...

I have no idea how many pairs anyone in my family has. It's never occurred to me to count them!

Sounds like this

Pants!
picklemewalnuts · 22/10/2021 14:12

Two weeks minimum is about right- covers holidays, being ill and missing a washday.
I have far more as I have white and black.

Having 14 pairs doesn't hurt the environment- they last twice as long as someone who has 7 pairs, and I don't need to do partial laundry washes.

scully29 · 22/10/2021 14:16

None of us have 9 pairs of pants! 9 is loads! We wouldnt have room to store 9 pairs of pants each! how many socks does he have!?

eightlivesdown · 22/10/2021 14:48

If he's fretting, buy a few more. £20 not to worry's a bargain.

lanthanum · 22/10/2021 15:03

I have the opposite problem - DH's response to running out of pants or socks is to order another pack online, not to check the airing cupboard! Nine pairs seems plenty to me, and if he's running low he can always alert me to put a wash on.
(Yes, before people ask, I do do all the laundry. It seems far more efficient to do everyone's together - I find it odd that some people do it all separately. He cooks.)
(I suppose if you each do your own washing, you do need more undies, as you won't be running a wash as often.)

NuffSaidSam · 22/10/2021 16:09

How many pants do you have each? And how small is your pant storage space that 9 would be an unachievable number? Or do you have loads of space but your pants are massive???
TSSDNCOP · 22/10/2021 16:26

DGM always said one cannot have enough pants, a bag should have a clean hanky, a fridge should always have a chilled bottle of champagne and an excellent host always has a fresh lemon, ice and bottle of tonic to hand.

dobbinsleftleg · 22/10/2021 17:25

@MatildaTheCat

Who doesn’t put the washing on for 14 days?
The machine is on at least every couple of days, and although we do our own laundry we'll often chuck in each other's smalls to make up a full load. So in theory there should only ever be two or three days worth of underwear in the dirty clothes basket.

This came about because he'd not done a wash for a week, I'd just done a full load of my own stuff so not added any of his, and he realised he needed 3 clean pairs to pack and may not get them dry in time.

It's pretty boring household minutiae by anyone's standard, but I was a bit flabbergasted that he didn't consider getting a new 3-pack of pants was an easy solution. It's not like they'd go to waste! But no he said "I have 9 pairs of pants, that's plenty, I don't need any more I'd be fine if you weren't taking up all the drying space "

I worked out I have about a month's worth of standard everyday 5-pack knickers - and I didn't think that overly excessive but maybe IABU.

oh Nuffsaid that made me laugh out loud - then DS wanted to know what I was laughing at so explained the thread to him and he reckons maybe OPs DH has 9 bottoms to need 9 pants!
