Pants!

dobbinsleftleg · 22/10/2021 12:21

DH and I do our own laundry, but he was stressing this week as he's got his first business trip since last year and he was fretting about having enough clean pants and socks.

I said if he was running that low he should just buy some more, but apparently NINE pairs is a perfectly adequate number of pants for a man to own already.

AIBU to think that owning at least two week's worth of pants is a basic adult thing to do?

I’ve got about 40 pairs of pants. I never run out 😁

Shelovesamystery · 22/10/2021 17:31

I have about 10 pairs of comfy pants, 10 pairs of nice pants and 3 thongs (that never get worn but I won't get rid of them because they were expensive). I would struggle with only 9 pairs of pants.

gogohm · 22/10/2021 17:32

I think 9 isn't enough because I hate doing laundry so do it in big batches. I think 20 is about right, enough for a 14 day holiday and just before and after

ShinyMe · 22/10/2021 17:35

I recently had a clearout after losing weight, and I threw out FORTY SEVEN pairs of pants, some of which I haven't seen in years, never mind worn. I now have 8 pairs and that works fine.

Simonjt · 22/10/2021 17:40

I’ve got about 30 pairs of everyday pants, they’re all white and I don’t have many whites, so I have enough to make a laundry load.

Remember when you go away you need a pair each day, plus you need the “what if I poo and pee myself” spares. So 9 pairs of pants is only really four nights away.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 22/10/2021 17:57

For trips away i fond you need more pants if you are going g out for dinner and changing before hand.

girlmom21 · 22/10/2021 18:00

Women need more pairs of underwear than men, I think.

FrankGrillosWrist · 22/10/2021 18:01

@MatildaTheCat

Who doesn’t put the washing on for 14 days?
One who goes away for 14 nights. I don’t go on holiday to wash.
Artie30 · 22/10/2021 18:05

Why the faff of doing your own laundry? Everything just gets done here together - with separate washes for whites or delicates! I couldn't be bothered with taking in turns using the washing machine 😅

SylvanasWindrunner · 22/10/2021 18:43

I have about 30 pairs of pants but only wear about 6/7 of them (my favourites!). So I guess the rest are emergency pants GrinDH probably only has about 10 pairs but he's never run out. We don't tend to do fortnightly holidays somewhere without washing facilities though.

ProcrastinationIsMySuperPower · 24/10/2021 17:55

@scully29

None of us have 9 pairs of pants! 9 is loads! We wouldnt have room to store 9 pairs of pants each! how many socks does he have!?
But underpants are teeny and take up no space, and you need at least one clean pair every day? Unless you think we're all talking about pants in the American sense, that would make more sense!
JeremiahObadiahJackanoryJonez · 24/10/2021 17:59

I’ve just double checked my knicker drawer and it appears I own 6 pairs of knickers. That’s it. Clearly failing at being a grown up ShockGrin

In my (clearly limited) defence I do put a load of washing on every day - there are 5 of us here…

Coogee · 24/10/2021 18:00

You'd need a fortnight's worth to go away on holiday for a couple of weeks...

I don’t take 31 pairs of knickers when I go on holiday for a month.

I wash them.

Datsandcogs · 24/10/2021 18:03

If you wear them night and day 14 pairs is enough for a week. But for an adult (hopefully no longer growing) more pairs means longer between washes which could be more environmentally friendly (not doing half loads), they’ll last longer for being worn less frequently. Buying a couple more pairs couldn’t hurt.

Fabian15 · 24/10/2021 18:06

This is hilarious! I think I have about 10 pairs and dh the same, we put on a wash at least every 3 days so we never run out.

IWouldLikeToKnow · 24/10/2021 18:17

Slightly shocked that people think that having 9 pairs is enough - or too much Shock
Without going to check, I'd be fairly confident that I have more than 30 pairs. In many colours and styles. Didn't think that was excessive. Would have assumed it was normal enough to be honest Blush

DappledThings · 24/10/2021 18:19

I probably have about 10. 9 seems fine.

What's much weirder to me is separating your laundry like that.

This really amused me! How different we all are.
pantsandpringles · 24/10/2021 18:27

When I go away I always take far too many pants. I seem to be convinced that I'll just be peeing myself instead of going to the bathroom like I do at home.

Fabian15 · 24/10/2021 18:30

It probably is normal to have lots of pants, but I find, same with socks, if I'm throwing them in with the wash whenever I put on a load, then dry and put away, it's always the same ones that get worn!

dudsville · 24/10/2021 18:33

He says he has enough pants and he's stressed about not having pants... is he maybe just a little anxious about his trip?

dudsville · 24/10/2021 18:35

Does anyone have "long haul pants"??? I have two pairs of big pants in a size bigger than I need so that I don't get uncomfortable on long haul flights, or with the bloat that can sometimes happen on planes.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 24/10/2021 18:37

I have 10 pairs of pants I generally wear (2x M&S 5 packs) plus 4 pairs of period pants, and a couple of random spare pairs (I only know because I finally cleared out the drawer recently and chucked out the ones I never wear). So I guess I just hit the magic number 14! But only 5 bras (3 crop top style ones, and T-shirt bras in black and white) that I maybe don’t wash often enough for mumsnet standards Blush

MarioPants · 24/10/2021 18:45

I haven't counted but I'd guess I have about 20 that I wear regularly plus some nice ones for dates (poor husband hasn't seen those in a long time) and the crappy old ones for periods (even though I've been sterilised so have no need for them).
When I go away I pack as if I'm going to shit myself at least twice a day, I took 5 pairs for a weekend away recently.

ItWaAgathaAllAlong · 24/10/2021 18:48

I don't really get why people do 'his' and 'mine' washing - unless they don't have children! Once you have children, you just 'do the washing' (most days - usually more than once too!). If you're putting a wash on, then just do it all? (I will concede that the ironing is a different matter - I don't always do everyone else's - but chucking clothes in the washing machine is easy and takes minutes).

The washing machine is on in our house every day, or occasionally we might miss a day (but only if we're out for the day or something like that). We could all manage with 3 pairs of pants, to be honest! It's only because people do have to go away sometimes for work or leisure trips without access to a washing machine for a week that we have more than 3 pairs each Grin.

Sometimes MN is a revelation to me about how other people divi up their laundry chores! But each to their own - as long as it works for you, that's the main issue.
